My mate crashed his saxo into another car and he was fine and the car was fixed, yeah it would have been a different story if he hit a tree or something but as long as your not driving like a dickhead you should be fine.

I own a Saxo (phase I) and I am very satisfied with car - superb handlig and comfort, low fuel consumption, etc., but passive safety is one biiig drawback.

The car is supposed to smash up... it's called a crumple zone. It means the crash lasts longer therefore there is less impact on the driver. If it didn't crumple up at all then the driver would be thrown forward because of the car being stopped so quickly and the momentum of the driver would carry on and he would be injured badly

This sounds excactly like everytime I crash on my bicycle. Which is a lot, I'm completely out of balance and drunk like an elefant after 20 cases of beer, without any learning skills what so ever. Bruises allover, and I hate it, because then my snake and ant tatoos cannot be seen. It's terrible!Once I crashed into a ditch just outside of Southall in London, when a guy owning this particular Saxo said "it could be worse." Then he mugged me and stole my bicycle.

All supermini cars bar possibly the VW Polo performed very similarly in 2000. The Saxo did not perform significantly worse than any other equivalent car tested who's origins dated back to the mid 90's.

Same speed, angle etc etc?? All I'm saying is that the Mark 3 Fiesta ('89-'95), first gen Corsa, Punto, Clio etc would have all scored only 2 stars - it's the age of the design. They were all sturdy for their day and safer than the generation before them i.e Fiat Uno, Citroen AX, Fiesta mark 2, Nova etc.

@RSTBADBOY To be fair, a relative has a new focus and it's nice, well built and sticks to the road pretty well... but you can't compare that to the saxo! The saxo is an old car! The shape of focus that was being made at the time when the saxo was is horrid inside, their slow too unless you want to spend a stupid amount of money on an rs on an st170. ect! The mk1 KA was the saxo's rival, same class of car, made at the same time costing the same amount of money!

I dont see the problem personally, i've got a 1998 saxo, and trust me if you drive senseably your less likely to have a crash in one of these. The overall road holding and handling is brilliant. Reliabilty? someone mentioned Polo's, vw's are over rated in the reliability department and are plaugued with electrical problems, the polo belongs to a relitively high insurance group too, and there slow! 1.4 16v mk 4 polo is slower than my 1.1 8v saxo!

I just read a newspaper artical about a 24 year old girl who died in one of these after coliding with a bus. Maybe if she'd had a better car she could have survived? Just goes to show that safer cars do save lives. The sad thing is new, young drivers can only aford cheap, old, usafe cars, and that's the pont in their life when they are most litley to crash.

i've seen a few saxo's and 106's at my local scrappies and it scares me that so many young people drive these they are total death traps its not worth the risk to save a few quid. get a polo thats a few years older or even a clio they are safer. PARENTS DON'T LET YOUR KIDS HAVE AN UNSAFE CAR THEY WILL CRASH!

Citroen had this didn't have lot's of money and the choice to developped his own car. The chairman Jacques Calvet was not generous with Citroen. Jean Martin Folz the new chairman of PSA gave the money and designers to make the Citroen C3 to replace the Saxo. This car was not so bad with the safty comparing to Clio, 205, Punto etc...
