  • @QQQQcon which lens do recommend? 70-200mm or 70-300 lens? and does it really matter if you don't have a VR system of Nikon in your lens, like the sigma lenses?

  • @Balcunni im just telling, all 70-200s are pro lenses.

  • are manfroto tripods good

  • @ethan50716 they are quite nice, but do not even come near gitzo tripods(which are very costly)

  • you take very nice picture have you thought of teaching a class if so sign me up

  • @barebasicphotos I have workshops if you live in tucson.

  • now that you have another 2 1/2 years of photography under your belt would you still consider the TC1.7 over the 1.4 on a d300s 70-200 2.8?

  • @SRAphotog yes

  • Thats what I mean I have DX camera and buy only FX lens for the magic day when I can afford one as well. I am not knocking you your cool I just made a observation

  • Stop buying DX lens and one day you will have junk for full frame cameras

  • @LaRobertos this video is two years old, and it is a waste to get full frame lenses for dx cameras, plus there is nothing that will get very wide on a dx camera with a full frame lens.

  • @QQQQcon Agree with the wide angle, but you're not quite right about it being a waste. A full frame lens will be 1.5x (for Nikon) longer on a DX body than the same length DX lens on a DX body. Good for birders and other wildlife photographers, not so good for landscapers.

  • @padlockd I meant for just landscape. your right for wildlife it is useful.

  • Good stuff man.

  • What kind of tripod do you have? what model?

  • @Bigwhite572 it is a gitzo and the model is discontinued but it was the least expensive gitzo carbon fiber tripod.

  • What kind of tripod and head did u say u have?

  • Hey there,

I also own 18-200mm lens, and like you I had to pay for it myself. Do you know if there is any telephoto converter that I could use with that lens without risking damaging it?

  • @Vtold1978 no there is not

  • I dont have a film camera but just out of curiousity, where would you develop the film from the F100? do stores still print them out?

  • I very much enjoyed your video. As a newbie to photography i appreciated your comments on the tripod. I have purchased a good tripod but am really unhappy with the ball head. I missed the brand of your ball head - can you share that again? Thanks.

  • 18-200 is the best lens nikon has made? mmh i doubt that! pretty poor at 200mm and slow!

  • the EXACT kit i would like to have, i have the nikon d60. and i was wondering how much all tour lenses, filters and teleconverter cost because i am looking to buy these. thanks heaps.

  • i seen an empty space in your camera bag guy

  • I own the D700 and 16-35mm. I suggest that over the 14-24mm. It takes regular filters!

  • So is wildlife photography your full time job? Just wondering.

  • @jvaughn94 No, I am a hobbyist at the moment.

  • where did you get the filter holder ? and from witch brand is he ? because i wanna get something like that

    thank you

  • @pomexable It is a lee filter holder and lee filters.

  • whats the best 77mm Circular Polarizer Filter to get?

  • @tony77tony77 I own a B & W

  • I really like your videos man, you don't bs around and you're direct to the point. You explain everything very clearly that even a grade school can understand. Thank you very much. I learn a lot from your videos. Thanks a Million!

  • are you alone..without family?? cause it seems like your the only one make your video... :) just confuse... you are good looking guy...:) nice to see you someday...

  • no, I just dont have them in my videos.

  • nice if we see them here someday... :D thank's for the reply...

  • i would look for a nikon Coolscan in conjunction to the F100, guaranteed it will pay for itself in a year

  • i just yesterday bought an nikon f5 film camer and velvia 50, and i really impressed so far. my question is that did u ever consiter the f5? if so was the weight the downfall? how would you compair the two?

  • It was to big and to expensive. the nikon f100 in my opinion is just as good or better unless you want to use film for action shoots, which is unwise.

  • Are you saying all the action images we have seen since the dawn of time were taken by people mabking unwise decisions by using film?

  • No it is just very expensive. for good film it can be 10 dollars a roll. And when you take hundreds of pics in one session for sports or wildlife it adds up.

  • Well, when one shot can pay thousands, who cares if you go through a couple propacks? Besides, one rammification using of digital cameras is exactly what you alluded---taking too many shots. You can also take too few, as you likely know. I use film exclusively but like just fine the modern drum scanners and pro printers found in pro labs. I also loved regular enlargments, though. Ilfochromes!

  • I shoot with Velvia, too. I like the full Fuji line and they say they are still developing film technology and have no plans to stop.

  • For the D300... What kind of lens do you need? Can it fit a 70-300mm lens?

  • yes it can.

  • Thanks.....

  • do you find the 70-200mm to be to short? even with the 1.7tc surely thats too short for birds ect?

  • Thanks, Im thinking about getting some filters and thought a polarizor would be a good place to start.

  • Hey Conor, another great video and your gallery on you sites awsome to. What is the make and model of your circular polarizor filter?

  • it was a B and W filter.

  • in terms of a wildlife lens, would you recommend the nikon 300f4 or the sigma 150-500. the extra reach and cheap pricetag is well worth the small drop in sharpness and image quality? if you stop the lens down to f8 or so the sigma is still very sharp.

    any thoughts?

  • The nikon 300mm is much better. The sigma is ok but way to slow in my opinion.

  • In comparison to the 70-200 f/2.8 VR, what would you say about the 80-200 F/2.8?

  • if you dont want to spend the money than the nikon 80-200mm is a good alternative.

  • OK thanks. 1 last thing. Would I be crazy to buy a 400-600 dollar film camera when i can get a beginner/decent dslr?

  • not to be rude (sorry if i am) but it sounds like you are a beginner to photography anyway. Thus, it might be wise to go digital simply because its free to take photos and see results. The more exp by shooting and viewing your results you get, the faster you'll learn. Yes you'll be forced to consider everything for film but again, they cost time and money, especially for beginners imho.

  • Will the 18-200 lens fit on my film camera? Or can you tell me what I have to search for to get an 18-200 lens for my film camera? I have a Nikon f501 (n2020). (F mount lens)

  • the nikon 18-200mm wont work with a nikon film camera because it is a dx lens.

  • So what type of lens do I have to look for? Could you recommend one for me?

  • Almost anything that is not dx will work on that camera, the nikon 24-85mm lens is a good cheap choice.

  • That´s funny, i just got a Nikon D3 but now i can´t afford the lenses, i wish i had that 12-24mm you got

  • jeje! that´s funny, i just got a Nikon D3 but now i cant´t afford the lenses, i wish i had that 12-24mm you got

  • :O 600 dollars a week?!!!! He's only 14?!!! Damn Q! I hope I get to that point!

  • dude i look up to u and know i make 600 dollars a week off my photo's and im 14 thank u!

  • How do you make 600 dollars a week?

  • how the helll do you make 600$ a week?

  • I'm going to be getting the Nikon D40 but would it be worth getting the 18-55mm lens or should I get a 55-200mm? It will obviously be my first SLR, and i'm 15 so I can't afford anything seriously expensive as i'm buying my camera & lens myself. I already have a bag.

  • I would get the nikon 18-55mm first and then wait on the nikon 55-200mm

  • The 18-55mm already comes with the D40. After you get the kit, a 55-200mm or 70-300mm would be a great next lens.

  • HI - well done on the videos, they are very clear and informative. I shoot sports photography - mainly jetskiing and currently have a d80, (which shoots too slow) and use the 70-300mm lens. I was thinking about upgrading to a d300. Would you keep the 70 -300 mm lens or upgrade to the 70-200mm 2.8 and possibly use a 1.7 converter? All the best, Lee

  • If you really get into sports photography you will probably want to upgrade to the nikon 70-200mm

  • thanks for the advice re the lens. I bought the d300 and it is excellent. I Will continue to use the 70-300, and get a 70-200 2.8 later (Santa may be good to me hint hint).

  • Get something in the 300mm f/2.8 range. Sigma makes a 120-300mm lens that could be yours for $2,700.

  • the best lens is the lenses are 85mm and 70/200mm they are stunning, i have them both and results blow away the 18/200!

  • And also, don't you get a ton of chromatic aberration with the 18-200mm lens compared to your other lenses? I have a Tamron 18-200mm lens, and the quality isn't as good as my 18-55mm kit lens. Is this just because it's a cheap 3rd party lens?

  • with the nikon d300 it has chromatic aberration control which means that the camera gets rid of most of the chromatic aberration after taking the picture. Third party lenses will have more chromatic aberration.

  • I made most of my money in years past tutoring, now I make most of my money off of youtube.

  • Wait, what?? How do you make money off of YouTube??

  • Adsense with google, it is the youtube partnership program. I place ads on my vids.

  • May I ask, where do you get your money?

  • I made most of my money in years past from tutoring, now I make most of my money off of youtube.

  • I have been looking at some filters, and i was wondering what the difference is between the Lee Filters, and the Cokin Filters. Mainly the difference that would justify the price difference.

  • Lee are better quality.

  • some of the lenses from nikon are more expensive than my nikon d-80. but there great lenses.

  • Great! Your vids are realy realy good. Thanks mate.

  • Hey,

What are your thoughts on the Sigma 50-500 Bigma and the 150-500 Bigmos? I know they are a little slow, but the extra range and good price are big pluses. Thoughts?

  • They are pretty well priced but I dont know anything about image quality.

  • nice vid man! your tutorials are great!

  • backpacks are the worst choice for most photographers, i dunno bout you, i need something closer to me that is easy access and i can get my camera out fast when a photo opportunity comes, ill get all the pictures befor this guy even gets his lense on.

  • you need to watch the whole video. If you had watched it you would have noticed that I said I never use the backpack and I always use a sling pack for easy acsess.

  • since its scartched, arnt ur photos all messed up? ur filter

  • no they have had no effect on my pictures.

  • do you sell stock photos?

  • no I do not

  • how much would you say this entire bag and its contents cost

  • man Im loving your vids! When does the next one come out? Maybe one of you in the field - photographin wildlife?

  • I can try

  • how can you afford a D300 and 70-200mm if your parents don't pay for the gear???

  • you get a job and work for a year and save until you can afford it.

  • i wouldn't get that film camera because they have stopped making Kodachrome

  • I dont use that film so it doesn't matter to me.

  • G'Day, I'm looking at getting into wildlife photography. I currently have a Nikon D80 and an 18-135mm. I borrow tripods but I'm really looking at getting a new lens. The Nikon 70-200mm is out of my price range but I was looking at the Sigma 70-200 or the Nikon 80-200 with a 1.4 TC. Or would I be better with like a 300 f4? Any thoughts?

    Thanks a lot

  • The nikon 300mm f/4 is great and so is the nikon 80-200mm. Keep in mind though that the nikon 80-200mm AD-F does not work with the new teleconverters only the nikon 80-200mm AF-S does.

  • yeah thanks. But what would you recommend me getting next. Like which lens would it be best for me to get next? Keeping in mind that I only have a 18-135. And what about the Sigma?

  • I would not get the sigma. If it were me I would get the nikon 300mm f/4 for wildlife.

  • what is wrong with the sigma. HSM II auto focus seems to be fast and its quite cheap

  • Thats the problem it is cheap and not that sharp. I have bought sigmas before and was not happy with the quality.

  • But I am worried about the Auto Focus speed of the 80-200

  • the nikon 80-200mm AF-S is fast. the other 80-200mm is a 70% the speed of an AF-S. It should be fast enough. If you want to use a teleconverter you want the nikon 80-200mm AF-S.

  • sweet gear man...

  • Will the teleconverter work with 18-200mm, if not, what teleconverter will work?what do you recommend? thanks

  • no it will not it only works with the nikon 70-200mm. I dont know if any other teleconverters would work on the 18-200mm. I would not put a telecoverter on the 18-200mm because it will really degrade the image quality.

  • Will the teleconverter work with a 70-300?

  • no only with the 70-200mm

  • Thanks for sharing, do you have Flickr or something? I would love to see your photos with those glasses.

  • yes I do, there is a link to my flickr site on my main page.

  • For landscapes are you not better off getting a PCE lense rather than the 14-24.

  • I would just get a 4 x 5 camera system than a PCE lens. I like the 14-24mm but if you wanted a picture that is in complete focus through out than the PCE is your kind of lens.

  • Brilliant video, thanks for posting I love photography too!

  • Interesting video.

    Thanks for sharing!

  • have you tried cross processing or B&W film?

  • Wow! Great vid! YOu really know what you are doing!

  • Very cool ;-) you have great philosophies, and a sensible head. We all have to save for that great gear :-( I'm saving for the Nikon 70-200 VR 2.8 to partner my 17-55 on the d300. This 2 lens combo will cover 99% of my needs. Good vid.

  • i liked that video

except for the last part the light in the bkground wasnt nice but i have a bag like that but i use it for taking pictures when im mtnbiking or skiing or action sports... well thanks for the video :)

  • I currently shoot a D80 with the 18-135 kit lens. i want to get more into landscape and wildlife photography. ive saved up around 1800 dollars. what should i buy? i want the 14-24 f2.8 because my next camera will be full frame but do you think its worth it on dx?

  • I would get the new nikon 10-24mm dx which is nearly as wide as the 14-24mm and costs 900 dollars.

  • I was just wondering, for the 70-200mm. @ 70mm the f/ stop if 2.8, what is the f/ stop when you zoom in too 200mm? thanks!

  • the same. f/2.8

  • How do you afford all of this? your pics are very nice though!!! good job

  • I work. I sell some pics.

  • Dude you're the best .. Dose the 1.7 Tele-extender work with the Nikon 70-300? and how much dose it cost? where can i buy one??

  • Does the 1.7 Tele-extender work with the Nikon 18-200mm? Or the Nikon 70-300?

  • I am afraid not, it only works with the nikon 70-200mm and long telephoto prime lenses which cost thousands of dollars.

  • well thats a big bummer haha. Do you know of any other brand of extender that would work with the 18-200? At the moment I really can't afford the 70-200 or lenses of it's calibur.

  • I dont know of any, sorry.

  • okay im really sorry but phoyographic gear and my budget is complex so i still have questions (im a big fan of your reviews :D)

can i have a link to where you buy your lee filters? also which lee filters do you specifically use? (how strong)

can i have a link to the UV filters you use?

is the manfrotto head any good for panoramas? could you compare it to the giotto mh-1002

is there a cheaper alternate you might recommend to the gitzo? maybe a manfrotto?

  • hay QQQQcon .. I own a Nikon D60 right now but I'm planning to buy Nikon D90 ...

I started photography few months ago so I'm not that pro. in photography ..

I really enjoy photographing birds but my 70-300mm lens dosnt help me much and its AF but when i shoot with it it is MF could be D60 iis the reasone ?? .. please give me any advice on lens that i should use for bird photography .. budget>> after buying the D90 about $650 but Im saving from now .. please replay

  • The nikon 70-300mm vr lens is a great lens.

  • doesnt putting a polarizing filter on your super wide angle lens mess up your pictures

  • It makes them look different and yes if you you position it incorrectly you will get blue strips in the sky instead of a totally blue sky. I personally like that sometimes.

  • Do you also use a uv filter on the 12-24, on top of the polarizer?

  • no I do not

  • Thanks.

Each of your lens had a filter, but did you use a step-up ring from 72-77 on the 18-200 for compatibility?

Also, going back to my previous question, the only filter on your 12-24 was a polarizing filter?

Did you use your polarizer and ND exclusively on your 12-24?

I'm just wondering because I'm using a d40 with the 18-200, and I might pick up nikon's new 10-24. I'm just fretting over the different filter sizes.

I picked up my rig last December, so I'm still new at this.

    Thanks.

  • no step up rings so I could only use the polarizing filters on the 12-24mm. same with the ND filter. I would just get a step up ring for your 18-200mm lens, but I suggest you still get UV filters for both.

  • hey, i have the 18-200 Vr lens, and i notice that it clicks when the Auto focus is acting. is it the VR that makes the sound? or my lens is broken? :)) :D

  • okay im really sorry but phoyographic gear and my budget is complex so i still have questions (im a big fan of your reviews :D)

can i have a link to where you buy your lee filters? also which lee filters do you specifically use? (how strong)

  • The 18-200mm seems like a fantastic lens to suit almost every need so would it be worthwhile to start this canon to nikon switch over, before i dig myself too deep?

  • There are many pros making the same swap over calling the new nikon stuff 'black gold'. Just be glad you are considering the sway before spening £25k on gear!

  • my thoughts exactly :)

  • It seems i am on the budget you are or there abouts.

I've made some huge errors buying kit then reaching its limits too quickly, but then i've not had the cash to upgrade properly. for example i've bought the 55-200, 70-300 VR when really i should have saved and just got the 70-200 VR however i did not expect to be where i am now when i started with the D40!

  • nikon dx lenses like the 18-200mm only work on dx cameras. they will not fully cover the film of a f100 or f5. You will have to get FX lenses.

  • good lens to start with but remember canon now has an 18-200mm lens too. Either way you will have to start over if you want to shoot film. The canon 10-22mm wont work on film cameras and you already said you wanted to replace you canon rebel. so if you want to switch to nikon now is the time.

  • I want to upgrade my rebel to a 50D to get the most out of my 10-22mm although after watching this great vid, it's made me think twice..

My budget isn't a huge one but I could sell all my canon gear and switch over to nikon if i could share the lenses on the F100 so i could benefit from shooting both digital and film to obtain varied outcomes and as you said in your F100 review, outstanding quality when scanned in at a high resolution.

    ...

  • you can do that but keep in mind that you would have to buy FX lenses to share with the f100.

  • Very helpful review thanks, i have a few questions though as I'm in a sticky situation...

I'm currently studying fine art photography at degree level and my exposures mainly consist of portraits, the city and landscapes.

I have a rebel/400D at the moment with an EFS 10-22mm (which is fantastic) and the standard lens.. i also have a nikon F100 with no lenses as it was given to me and recently made my own darkroom for medium format work. (and soon to be 35mm)

    ...

  • okay im really sorry but phoyographic gear and my budget is complex so i still have questions (im a big fan of your reviews :D)

can i have a link to where you buy your lee filters? also which lee filters do you specifically use? (how strong)

is the manfrotto head any good for panoramas? could you compare it to the giotto mh-1002

is there a cheaper alternate you might recommend to the gitzo? maybe a manfrotto?

  • 1. hey what specific gitzo and ballhead do u use?

    2. why did u choose nikon?

    3. does tripod size matter?

  • 1. GT1530

    2. No real reason at first

    3. not really unless you using huge lenses like a nikon 400mm f/2.8

  • is there any tripod you may recommend that will hold a professional camera (1ds mark iii) and 70-200mm f2.8 IS

i dont actually use those but i like a little extra ease for emergency

  • its fine for that setup

  • okay my FINAL tripod/head questions.

is the manfrotto head any good for panoramas? could you compare it to the giotto mh-1002

is there an alternate you might recommend to the gitzo? maybe a manfrotto? not all of us can spend $600+ on a pair of legs (though i understand their importance)

  • okay wait i have one set of questions left

1.what bogen ballhead are you using?

    2. do you think that the gitzo was worth it? do you pay for the quality or the name?

    3. what made you choose the gt1530

btw please answer the question i asked below as well thanks in advance!

  • 1. manfrotto 488RC2

    2. YES! Quality is unsurpassable

    3. because it was the best tripod for the price.

  • Hi, Ive discovered the TAMRAC Velocity in your video and now i want to buy one... Thanks ;)

Do you really have the Velocity 7x or a bigger model? Does the Nikon with a 70-200mm lens fits in the 7x?

  • Whats a good cheap portrait lens for my nikon D90

  • nikon 50mm f/1.8

  • wat do u do to pay for all this stuff?

  • I do alot of work, mostly tutoring for math and science. I make some of the money off my photos but I have yet to build up to making alot of my money off of photos

  • oh ok sweet thanks dude

  • ?????? help me??

  • is the 70-200 an fx lens??

  • yes

  • how much did the 1.7 teleconverter cost and wered u get it. can it go on a 55-200mm 1:4-5.6G lens

  • it is about 400 dollars and no it can only go on the 70-200mm

  • wich one would u recomend the 80-400 or the 70-200. cause i have a 55-200 mm is that one the same one as the 70-200 or no cause im confused

  • The 80-400mm is a good lens but focuses very slowly and is slow in general. If you take picture in bright light then the 80-400mm is great if you shoot in low light or shoot fast subjects you might want to consider the 70-200mm
