Nitric acid itsself is not a vapor at room temperature, but reacts with oxygen to form nitrogen dioxide, a nasty toxic gas. in the short term, pulmonary edema would insue, but if shes still walking, she wasn't hit hard eanough to do serious damage.

She apparently already had congestive heart failure, and while it may have caused a short term problem, I don't know how it could still be the cause of problems. I think her health may have failed anyway if she had not been exposed. This was just something easy to blame.

When Nitric Acid hits the air it turns to NOx gas (the dark browish gas cloud). well in essense, it immediately changed the O2 in her lungs, and in higher concentrations she would have drown in her own bodily fluids over days. It can slowly liquify your lungs.

Well, I can tell all you folks, (thanks for caring;), that this particular spill was NASTY. I was the one the hose broke on. At 97% concentration, it burned everything instantly. Including yours truly. To inhale as much as I did, I worry sometimes. It ate the o2 in my lungs straight away. I nearly blacked out but kept scrambling outa there as fast as I could. Oh, and chlorine sucks too! lol
I'm sure these victims would rather have their good health back over the money. Once your health is gone, it's hard to enjoy anything anymore. These poor people understand that.
