  • really suks when you have to hire two mediocre drummers just to make one.

  • @craigzarkos Haha...good one.

  • keltner is playing a "KINKS" kit.

  • ♥ .

  • are they playing along something?

  • 91 seconds of cool.

  • See more of Steve Jordan on SoulDrummers . com

  • search "130 seconds of cool" for more GROOVEY STUFF!

  • chek it

  • what a shitty jam. they're both capable of groovier.

  • I think a lot of drummers would be much more satisfied with their playing (so would their friends, neighbours, and band members) if they could learn to sit back and groove rather than struggling to be chops monsters. Sure, Jordan has chops galore, but the biggest chop he has is his groove. Dig It!!!

  • @MrCherryJuice You're 100% on that one! Totally Dig it!!

  • @funkydrummer14 - Thank you, funkydrummer14. You might be interested in Steve Jordan's drum video, wherein he demos all sorts of grooves. Many sound somewhat dated in style... but those are the ones that really work best. Their funky because they swing, not because they have some slamming backbeat. Listen to David Garibaldi w/Tower of Power, or the drummers of James Brown. The funkiest cats all swing. And you don't need to be hammering it out to do that. And guest what? No technical chops!

  • @MrCherryJuice Yeah..."The Groove is Here" DVD...I will be purchasing that one very soon.. ....VERY heavily influenced by Steve's playing as well as all the other players you mentioned....Bernard Purdie plays some amazing stuff as well. It sill amazes me that many drummers out there still think great drumming is all about how fast you can play and technical prowess!? More emphasis on the groove with minimal fills ( sometimes none) and a light touch has always been my approach to the kit..

  • @funkydrummer14 - Check into some of the Purdie videos on YouTube. There are some really great tutorial ones where he explains how he developed the Purdie Shuffle... one where he's tapping is snare hand fingers on the drum as he's playing the groove. Plus his deliver is so understated and humorous. Also listen (though you likely have it) to Richard Bailey on Jeff Beck's 'Blow by Blow'. Unbelievable, he was only 17 at the time. Funky stuff!

  • Jim Keltner played session for the Kinks back in the day. Two session masters in one session!!!! Mr Mayer you are one lucky mo-fo!!!!!!

  • Badass

  • legendary

  • my guess is it is capitol records studio A....with Al Schmidt...where the heck did that KINKs bass drum head come from?

  • @jasaggio pretty sure this is in john mayer's house when they were recording battle studies, but i'm not positive... i know they did the entire album there. pretty much converted his entire house into one big recording studio. said so on his blog :)

  • anonymouswhiteperson...........im still cracking up after reading your comments...so effing funny

  • You just made me hungry!

  • Jim's time gives me chills. That's some dead serious meter. He could tap on a newspaper and it would have great feel.

  • this is Real music!!! not those hiperflashyfastlinearboringgrooves of nowadays!!!

lets bring back to the deep start when music was an truly ART of the muses!!!!

  • if you like the sound of Jim's music, be sure to check out Robert Randolph, he's giving away a free track download off his new album on his website

  • @wake909 its at robertrandolph period net

  • 91 seconds of awesome! :D

  • my GOD this is brilliant.

  • ??????????????????????

  • when was this video taken? so good to see the man jim keltner!

  • Very nice. What song were these two recording this for?

  • Cool stuff. This shows that it's about subtlety and groove rather than bashing people over the head with technical stuff. Flashy stuff may get you on YouTube, but playing with groove and musicality will get you gigs.

  • Weird how the best rockstar in the world the richest drummer in the world can only afford a crappy camera...

  • @Vr0l1jk as you can see by the collection of expensive microphones and setup, this was not meant to be a quality video more than it is an audio recording.

  • Nice post...

The "giving quality" or their playing is why they are so in demand>>>

  • Lol, Jim Keltner looks like john goodman.

  • mic setup is extremely awesome.

  • Ah Steve! And Jim! So great. Really cool to see a collaboration recording effort between drummers like this

  • so effing AWESOME

  • Awsome drummers, somany drum lessons in 90 seconds

  • Just thought you'd like to know.

  • @AnonymousWhitePerson

I see your comments at all kinds of random videos, i demand to know your name sir! Your comments are creative and shouldn't be hid by whoever you are! ;D

  • sounds yummy..if u are a woman..lol

  • @AnonymousWhitePerson

    haha

I love this too. Reminds me a lot of the sounds of samba. Some thing like getz, gilberto, and byrd would make.

  • Awesome! But I always had a problem with Charlie Watts dragging at the end of tunes. You guys seem to say he's some sort of a groove messiah: I never saw it...I thought he was fine...which is fine...but he does occasionally get a bit draggy, am I wrong?

  • u not wrong at all..i personally hate his playing yet hes the riches drummer in the universe..go figure!!

  • @petealk12 .... I am not trying to be argumentative but why do you hate jim keltners playing .. i can see someone saying they are not blown away by him , after all he does not do a lot of mind blowing chops things ...but to say you hate it ... i wonder why he does that to you ...enlighten me

  • @sweetfly66 i honestly dont even remember writing anything negative about Jim,,Jim is actually one of the greatest musician to ever set behind the drums..some how this was meant for Charlie Watts..thats the only drummer that i really cant stand hearing and worste Watching play drums..but yeah LONG LIVE JIM KELTNER

  • @petealk12 ... yeah , that makes more sense ... you should check out this drum magazine called Drumhead . Jonathan Mover puts it out . This month there is an interview with Keltner in it . Yeah its the drums and yeah its Keltner but besides that ...it is one of the best music articles i have ever read .

  • JOHN GAYER:

This is not a bad defense.

    SJK

  • that is cool. for 90 seconds

  • Amazing!

  • sitting right in the pocket

  • that's a cool kit keltner is sitting behind.

  • FUCK! This is too short!!!!

  • Friggin love these guys...2 of my faves!!!

  • Sounds like they are about to go into "Break on Through" by The Doors. Hahaha

  • This is the drumming for the song Do You Know Me on Battle Studies

  • good for mayer that he has such great companions

  • These guys are so good, that they would rock the groove eating crackers!

  • hahahaha! that is so funny....

    "...groove eating crackers..."

    So TRUE!

  • steve has amazing technique!

  • i'm about to loop this sh** and start jamming to it. GENIUS!

  • Fucking legends... this is so cool John....

  • Good stuff. Two of the best players.

  • 2 secs in i knew it was great. First i was like, "Man that ride is the coolest sound I've heard all week," and then i was like, "Man that snare is awesome" and then i heard the bass drum. The beat Steve plays towards the end is totally sick. Not complicated just thoughtful and totally groovy. Can't wait to hear this album

  • nicely layered sound-really like the arrangement can't wait to hear the full production :)

  • it's 91 sec's :D

  • sounds a lot like "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck

  • when listening to this, i feel like i should be wearing round sunglasses and a beret.

  • Is Keltner playing a Kinks drumkit?

  • yup, old Ludwig in black oyster (i think)

  • Any idea if this'll be a published song?

  • bpaluzzi....as if they are trying to get a professional sound here.....you are an ignorant fuck.

  • two legends in one room! these guys both played on various rolling stones and keith richards records, this is great!!! john mayer gathers some great people around him, can't wait to hear the new record....

  • 3 actually

  • :-)

  • u know ur a badass musician when one drummer cannot sattisfy the way the song sounds in your head

  • yeeeeeeaaaahhhh....

  • Sweetest Taboo, Sade?

  • tomwehrle if u dont like it dont fucking listen to it! its as simple as that! douchbag

  • tomwehrle, youre a little pointless

  • Try Steve Weiss Music and look for Louie Bellson "jingle Sticks"

  • Look for "JingleMute".

  • it sounds a bit like the beat to sweetest taboo by sade in the beginning... still a beast tho... :) Te amo John and the band!!!

  • That was amazing... The drums sounded like a bebop drums...

  • this is tight

  • Nice!!! Jim Keltner was the ghost drummer on a lot of Beatles tracks btw...

  • no, he wasn't.

  • ADD MORE VIDEOS JOHN!!!!!!!!

  • I watch this video and I'm looking at the set and I see what looks like a speaker sticking right out of the kick drum. What is this?

  • Its a speaker wired as a microphone. The whole speaker cone acts as a very large diaphragm. Thus, low frequency acquisition is possible. Yamaha markets this as SubKick.

  • the drum mic

  • I saw them using a speaker in front of the kick....probably reversed polarity and used as a mic....Holy fuck....what a deadly idea....I bet it picks up every bit of the kick's frequencies....gonna try it next week!

  • btw.... it does work really nicely... my friend has a similar drum kit and he took apart his parent plain bose speakers and it turned out fine... although he did get in trouble and got ground for taking apart a speaker from thier new home theater... but trust me, it sounds pro... and dont ask how he did it... i dont no how and he said he just did random stuff( my ass)

  • Yeah, it's called a SUB-Kick. Yamaha sells them with their drum sets... I'm not sure if you can buy them as a single product.

  • cool fucking idea too....i tried it with a mic inside as well as a speaker outside....rolled off the higher frequencies coming from the speaker and blended it in the mix and let me tell you...it tracked and mixed awesome....i was trying to gett that sound before by just eqing the single mic...now i've got it!

  • The Yamaha Subkick is a commercial version of what they're using here, but this is just a home-made version. The Subkick captures the low end, but you still need a regular mic to get the attack. It's available as a separate product -- AFAIK, it's not bundled with any sets.

  • i'm sure if john mayer died

he would've tweeted about it ;]

  • the more i listen the more i think its 50 ways to leave your lover

  • Great Ears my Friend!

  • They make it look so easy. Keltner is just awesome...Jordan too.

  • beautiful!

  • RIP.

  • That is some serious micing going on right there, i love it!

  • Steve Jordan = the only other good drummer with two first names as his name. :)

  • carter beauford

  • ah. True that. I didn't know the name of DMB's drummer. I stand corrected. :)

  • who names their kid beauford? Although yes, he is a great drummer.

  • beauford is his last name so his parents didn't really choose that...

  • :) im sure there is some kid running around out there with that as a name.... haha but ya :)

  • Beauford is his last name dip shit, you inherit last names not choose them

  • You don't choose first names either.

  • Yonrico Scott

  • now that makes more sense. Thank you. I stand corrected.

  • wow, this is pretty ballin outrageous

  • Funny Earz, I guess you think no one's heard of Twitter

  • john mayer isn't dead...you people need to read the newspaper.

  • yeah hes quite alive, he was just live twittering critque on chelsea handlers show (chelsea lately)

  • JOHN MAYER IS NOT DEAD U IDIOTS

  • Sad to say he is bro.

  • That's a HILARIOUS rumour, what's wrong with people?!

  • he's not dead? is he.. wtf. i mean yesterday he did this gig with his battle studies songs. o.O yesterday being 9th of august.

if he is, then my 2 biggest examples as musicians are recently dead: MJ and JM -.-

  • steve jordan is the man

  • for a minute there i thought they were gonna bust into "take the a train"... :)

  • John, cut the drugs will ya..

  • Dang this video is awesome! I love Steve but, I've never heard of the other guy. I need to go check him out.

and everyone PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stop saying John Mayer is dead. He's not dead! He is alive. Go check out his Twitter. and also he posted this vdeo so how can he be dead? WTF people!

  • ummm he's not dead.....and he films and posts his own videos so that proves it

  • u are a retard

  • You've got to be shitting me. Why the hell would anyone think John Mayer is dead? You people are rediculous. Fuck twitter by the way.

  • wow...you're retarded. he is not dead

  • wtf is wrong with everyone, he's not dead:S

  • What the fuck is wrong with you kid? Jesus...

  • MJ is dead... Not JM.

  • Cool groove, works hypnotizing (how the hell do you spell that, haha)

    hope so...

  • RIP sweet prince

  • lol

  • who died here?

  • What's with the KINKS drumset? Can anyone explain?

  • I dig it, but John how long till we get another proper video update on your progress?! Thats what I really want to see!

  • who's dead??

  • Can't wait for the finished product

  • RIP

  • RIP who?....

  • I think people STILL think John is dead, somehow....?

  • Jeff Porcaro!

Just to settle the drummer quarrel ;p

  • You were the best.

    Fucking RIP.

  • hes not dead

  • haha

  • In a way it kinda reminded me of Sade's Sweetest Taboo.

  • this is a pretty cool groove that they got going. i am not trying to make steve jordan sounds useless, but i'm pretty sure that Neil Peart is the best drummer on the planet.

  • Neil Peart is overrated at best. Usually, when someone says "blank-blank" is the best drummer, they are not. You can not say a person is the best drummer in the world because you have not heard them all. I can say that Carter Buford from DMB is a better drummer than Neil Peart though. That is easy to see.

  • i do agree that a lot of people say that so and so is the best, i see it lots with guitar vids. carter is pretty good, his open style is interesting i would say. i'm canadian so i gotta throw peart's name in the mix. if john bonham was still around though...

  • Neil Peart is a great drummer. I didn't mean to sound so negative. Just read my comment again and it seemed really negative. Sorry.

  • no worries man. i do the same thing sometimes so its all good.

  • awesome!

  • It's actually 91 seconds of cool.

  • they are recording and they have the other tracks in the headphones.

  • If only we could also see John tryin to groove to it! love it anyway.

  • Yes!

  • When I grow up I want to be Steve Jordan

  • who doesnt

  • Sweet Groove! Steve Jordan, the Best drummer on earth. :)

  • okey better next time.. wanna see it personal!

  • what a fun job
