@Saitothesushi crazily the 'King' is actually even more of a legend than Boris, I always thought he was just some laughing stock but that Fiona Bruce interview schooled me to kingdom come.
By England I hope you mean Scotland, Northern Ireland, Canada, Australia, Wales, England, the channel islands, the Falkland Islands and so on and so forth.
I agree with Boris. He is absolutely right. There are ID cards in the US and that did NOT stop the towers from being destroyed. What WILL happen is abuse from those who will choose to stop thinking for themselves. In the US, ANYONE can ask for your ID at the petrol station, at the supermarket, at the door of a bar, anywhere. Common sense has taken a back-seat to "I'm just doing my job." If a person who is obviously in their 50's is buying wine, then why in the world do they bother asking.
@FredericaBimble lol they had ID cards before the war on terrorism and still have them today. that must mean there is some use for them. oh yea what that big thing at the momment. Immigration!!!
Who are you trying to convince? Human error, flaw in the system, doesn't matter - either you want ID cards or you don't. We don't live in a perfect society so theorising on a world where humanity is taken out of the equation is really just talking for the sake of talking. Systematic flaw? One only needs to look at London Transport's Oyster system to find a comparison of a flawed working system. If the system "freezes" then it erase your money on the card or charges for journeys not taken.
@valdez87 hurra a one who think ID cards are perfect abart from the prices. as i've said in another comment the main thing about this is to stop illegal imigration don't have an id card well then your gonna have to sign up for one and well when you egt to the office you'll have to have a few good documents to prove you're hear legally.
Well said, Boris. It is not British to carry around ID with you. The Brussels nanny state is trying to tell us how to live our lives, yet again. We don't need the Euro, we don't need ID cards. We don't need the egalitarian, "socialist do-gooder" nonsense coming out of Brussels. A waste of money, and a waste of space in my pocket.
I agree. The abuse of ID cards has already been reported over here and they haven't even been "officially" rolled out. There have been a few reports of supermarkets asking folks obviously over the age of 50 for their IDs because "if we don't ask, we could get fined." If the British public lets it, they will end up with an atmosphere like the US - where ID cards have been in use for as long as I can remember (over 40 years) and they did NOT stop or will stop acts of terrorism. Waste of money.
valdez87: The 'downside' of this Socialist New Order society they have in store for us is very obvious surely? That HUGE amount of control in so few hands! When the Lisbon Treaty is ratified, any MP you vote for will only be able to MAKE SUGGESTIONS to the unelected EU Council which they are free to reject! or else we need to get ONE MILLION signatures from different nationalities (imagine how difficult that would be) - which again, can be rejected. Does that sound like democracy to you??!!!
I'm not vindicating these people, or saying it's a good idea. *Again* (sigh) I KNOW this will get screwed up, of COURSE.
BUT, in THEORY... if it was executed CORRECTLY (which it won't be, I REALISE)... a "perfect" world would have 100% surveilance, removing the human/emotional/imperfect element. Nothing is that clear cut but *if* it was then ID cards would smooth over so many problems we have right now.
well said boris! they can shove the id cards up theira asses! i wont eat mine though, i will shove it up jacky smith's ass for her! never will i provide my papers to a gestapo police

I have nothing against ID cards and think anybody who does has something to hide, or is simply holding onto an idea that died along with the turn of the 20th century - way before any of us was born...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Anything which cuts down on bereaucracy is a good thing - a lot of the paperwork and logistics of many systems in the UK such as the NHS, Law Enforcement, Education and Transport are not optimal in terms of potential... and (most) humans are flawed and are more consitent at screwing up than at being consistent!!
In a perfect economy every person would have a chip in their arm/leg wherever - but I'm pretty sure that violates basic human rights in most peoples' eyes :P
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
No, you wake up... what are the downsides of these so called "dystopias"? 1984, Equilibrium, Brave New World, etc... yes, they are extremes, but the point is not having corruption within the control, it's having responsible people in charge, THAT is the difficulty that people fear - as long as surveilance is done the right way, then it can only contribute to a peaceful society...
Please try to understand what I'm saying O_o remove yourself from the reality and realise that with EXECUTION this would of course be perfect... come on, it's simple logic - you lack that basic imagination!
I *KNOW* they will screw it up, but I'm saying if it was executed properly then it would be the right thing to do.
Okay, I'll meet you half way and say that I'd be against them doing it, but again (sigh), not because of the IDEA, but the EXECUTION of it
no no valdez - you obviosly have not thought this through nor researched enough from a wider seledtion of materials -
How could such a society be utopian - your comments scare me - seriously - you are an idiot and you do lack human soul please research the areas more including whatever you think that we are under such a threat from that all human beings can not be trusted
not the place I want to live buddy - believe me you or your kids and kids kids wont like it either
I've never had to explain myself more than on this point. I don't WANT this kind of society, but the reason isn't because it's scary or wrong but because human nature will screw it up. If human nature was "better", then this kind of system would create a 0 crime ethical moral society. It's just, you can't really define ethics and morals so clear cut because of human nature.
So (again!) lol, I'm NOT saying that we SHOULD have this system because it will bring us closer to a perfect society, but that we SHOULDN'T have it because it will make society worse because of human nature dictatorship, corruption, imbalance in power, inefficiency etc...
But the SYSTEM itself ain't broken, it's clearly optimal in the same way 1+1=2, it's HUMANS that are broken.
id cards will just be another system that can be abused like passports, N.I cards etc. they cost shit loads and are totally unviable, politicians might like to bring ideas back from their heavenly homes in the clouds to us but they are not always very sensible
I don't understand why nobody is seeing the perspective I'm trying to convey here... okay I'll take a step back and say that yes, in reality it's a waste of money and it's going to get fucked up - but my point is that it's a human element that makes it the wrong thing to do due to execution... it's like communism - it simply doesn't work, but in theory IF there was no human element to screw it up then it's optimal...
right you are Boris! everyone recieving the the ID card by post should mail it back to the gov dept office from where it was sent, it can be like the poll tax as millions refusing to pay it or have one the scheme will fail!
He's a bit of a fool, but I totally agree with him on this. Just wish he was talking about how ID cards undermine our rights instead of how it's a waste of money...
