Left us way too soon, but so thankful God gave her to us for at least a little while. Never heard such emotion put in a song, which is what Eva did on every vocal I have ever heard from one of the most gifted singers ever!!
This track is tough to find if you're looking for Eva Cassidy albums. It is actually from a "duet" she did with Chuck Brown. The title of the album is entitled "Chuck Brown and Eva Cassidy: "The Other Side"
It's like she's the female Roy Orbison...her singing has so much earth and soul, so much emotion, it almost makes you want to drive your car off a cliff :-)
I discovered Eva about 10 years ago. She blew my mind away with her music so much that I can't listen to her much. As a long time fan of Percy Sledge, I have never heard anyone sing his song with such emotion as Eva. Every time I tune-in to her music I discover something that I haven't heard before. Its almost as if she was here with us today. God Bless and RIP.
It seems I can't help but cry EVERY time I hear it........... I went through life not knowing about her incredible voice until about 10 yrs ago!! This was the first song that I heard Eva sing, because I was searching on the internet for a copy of my mother's song..........that's right, Chips Moman ran off with a bunch of songs from Stax at one point when my mother(R.I.P.) Nina Ruth Clausel (then I believe she had the last name Lowery) was one of the writers ripped off!!!
WOW! What an incredible version of a By God CLASSIC! Eva RIIP and BELT 'em out for the ANGELS! Thanks superstarsingerfreak and YT for the upload and clearing some space for a righteous interpretation of a very very good tune! Damofino Eva thanks for stepping up to the plate and belting this smoking puppy out of the old ballpark! Damno I love this song!
Eva had one of the greatest voices of all time but she was too soft with a lot of her songs for my particular taste - but she connected perfectly with this one.
beautiful!!! im lookin for a version that combines carr, this, and the commitments...range, volume + oomph/blues aspect... anybody know one help a sister out!!
Honestly, the James Carr is the version...she even gets some of the words wrong and she dosen't understand the dark despair of the song, but hey if people love it then be happy and enjoy it..oh and the key change is a car crash..oh...
Funfabmegan LOL why don't we all resolve all of our problems and have nothing to sing about with passion. Since you don't have any understanding about artistic expression why don't you just exclusively read non-fiction or get an education about literature or simply not make asinine comments about lyrics This is a Blues Song! Why don't you try writing you own song about being perfectly well adjusted and your personal life in perfect order and see how interesting it is lyrically.
@lorifredrics I believe we connect in our broken places, even those scarred over with gold. Perfection and self-sufficiency aren't really possible. Just some people think so.
@swifturtle12 Thanks. It's something I saw shown in a day-vision to show me how I had been broken but was being rebuilt, but now shining in the places I had healed, growing in compassion. I then realized I am not attracted to perfection in people - more the people whom I felt I could help, be a friend to.
i dont really get this song. If she and he love each other why is it such a dark end of the street secret? Why aren't they just together? Ok so if they are both cheating then why dont they resolve their past and move on to the future. Sheesh.. Eh, i know i know its just a song. Not a motion picture. :)
@funfabmegan The secrecy doesn't have to be due to something that's actually wrong, could be a Muslim Christian, Protestant Catholic, black white couple, etc that could never actually marry because of the social consequences where they live.
you can buy her cds on amazon and some barns and nobels carry her. Thats where i bough mine. I belive i was told that her mother/family give the proceeds to the cancer foundation. :)
This is a good version of a good song. But for my money, Flying Burrito Brothers, on Gilded Palace of Sin album--THE great country rock album of all time--have ultimate version of this song. Gram Parsons' voice--plus back up vocals--cannot be beat.
I didnt like this. I love this song but I think its been done a hundred times better by James Carr and Andrew strong just to name two. No disrespect to anyone who enjoyed this but I would urge you to check both the above versions out if you havent already.
The fact that you didn't like this means little to the vast majority of the visitors to this and most of the other "Eva" songs posted here. We didn't come here to listen and compare to other singers. We came here to be with "Eva". Regardless of which song she is singing she has a way of making it her own. I am almost 68 years old and have been a fan for many years. There are a lot of singers out there and they all need fans. I pick mine, you pick yours, sit back, listen, and enjoy.
Bit of a strong statement that isn't it? Anybody would think with a statement like that , that this was a comments section, oh wait it is. I am absolutely allowed to say I didn't like it. I qualified my comment by saying I didn't mean for anyone to take any offence, I guess some people like doing that. In future please remember that some people find this clip as a result of searching for the song and not the artist. I was merely attempting to provide people with alternative versions.
Eva's amazing voice. Thank you, for posting. "steal away to the dark end of the street ... you and me at the dark end of the street..." Eva's strong, passionate voice is awesome.
Eva has the voice of an angel and the world of music is much sadder without her, her voice comes from her soul unlike the sad karaoke stars we get from programs like x factor etc. Rip Eva.
If this bitch truly had a voice she would/there would not be so much instrumental bullshit and over bearing background/back up...and that solo guitar.????? what the fuck? additinal loud bullshit!! .TO MUCH FUCKIN MUSIC AND WAY TO MUCH STUDIO...so fuck all of you bitches who thinks this is a good cover....she is trying to sing loud over the to much music and instumental bull shit...IF THIS BITCH HAD A VOICE THAT WOULD COME OUT...So fuck you and the horse you rode in on..U rat bastards!!
If this is what you truly believe and is not simply intended to be rude and vulgar, I would suggest that you check out Eva's versions of "Songbird", "Fields of Gold", and "Autumn Leaves". If you still think that she can't sing, you must be tone deaf.
It angers me so much that such shockingly touching beauty has only 80,000 worldwide hits, and filthy, commercialised dross like Susan Boyle gets hundreds of millions!!!
In what way is his comment silly/unworthy in any respect whatsoever? Indeed, if any comment here is to be classed as 'silly and unworthy', I think you need to reassess your views. Cassidy displays touching emotive power in this rendition, far from 'dull and lifeless'. Her originiality is fresh - is enthralling, totally disparate from commercialised crap.

WOW, Simply outstanding voice. I admit I have heard of Eva Cassidy but until now have not heard her stunning voice. Incredible and by gosh I have missed buying her CD? Hope I am not too late. Thank you for posting this 5star video and have subscribed put it into my play list. Thank you and congratulations with the great response you have had with this video.
I know her brother Dan very well - have played with him many times (he is a violinist) Eva died of cancer - melanoma, I believe. She was 33. Awful, awful loss
Eva did not die in a car crash, she died of skin cancer, melanoma, on Nov 2nd,1996, she was 33. I don't know where you heard it was a car crash. Regardless, it is still sad, she had a great future, May Eva rest in peace. Hank7
I believe that for reasons unknown to us she deliberately chose NOT to have a singing career. I can't think of a person who was gifted would not have started much earlier in a commerical career. Making it "big" was everyone's dream except Eva Cassidy. She didn't have a dream of a commerical career. They say she sold her albums from the trunk of her car. That isn't exactly the yellow brick road to stardom. We'll never know why. And it doesn't really matter now.
anybody critisizing these selections should recall that Eva only had One release bearing her name, with another pending at the time of her death. Many of the songs being released were rehearsal tapes or demos and probably would have been rejected by her for public release. Personally I'm thankful Chris Biondo has shared these gems with the world and I'm not alone.

Another EC covered this song: Elvis Costello.
Eva Cassidy had a powerful voice and an astonishing range but at times (as here) she used those fantastic gifts to show off rather than authentically express emotion. I prefer Elvis's version because he sounds as if he lived what he's singing.
Judgments are subjective, and Eva's "Over the Rainbow" always brings tears to my eyes. But if you are encountering a past love on a darkened street it would be with an ache, not such sonic overkill.
My friend Eva Cassidy could sing 10 circles around James Carr. Why do you think she slowed so many songs down? So she wouldn't overwhelm the song. Now go pic any version including Percy Sledge who sang it better than Carr also then come back and listen to this.
The issue here is one of style rather than "she's bettern' him" Eva had a style and James Carr did an excellent take but in the end is the era they lived in. I love playing all the old tunes side by side. They both were GREAT!!!!!
You are right about styles and the Periods in which they define how music will be played. Remember the theme from the Little Rascals. The sax's play slurred notes; nobody would listen to it now even though it is perfect in it's execution. The missing part; the 90% part is TALENT. And if you don't have talent you're already washed up.
Great song. Not too long ago i din't even know about Eva's songs. Thanks to my friends who told me about her i discovered a really great voice and awesome performances.
At last, my alltime Eva Cassidy favourite song is on YT. Others may disagree as I read below. Having almost everything Eva recorded I still am blown away by "Dark End". All the
specific qualities of her beautiful and angelic voice can be heard in this song, that I consider as the alltime greatest love song.
Eva is the best singer ever that existed on this earth, love her for ever and beyond !!
MAN! she really fucks this song up!! :S aight, she can sing, but she really doesn´t deserves this song, I mean, just litsen to the commitments when andrew strong sings it, man that guy can REALLY sing! this is a piece of crap...
I just recently discovered Gram Parsons and I absolutely love him. Eva's version is beautiful as well...Today's artists don't come close to this kind of talent...
Parsons are a myth he had a spell on her voice, her duets with Emmylou Harris burn the air.Hear to Wilco,Drive by truckers the french genius Dominique A. or the spanish Nacho Vegas(this guy is from my city)all of them are quite talented, the music of our times still being good but you may to exert yourself a little bit more to find it.Greetings from the north of Spain.
ANGELIC dear eva you were trully blessed by god himself you are an angel & i thank god for allowing us to hear you. now you sing in heaven for him i love you & goodnight eva x

That isn't exactly the yellow brick road to stardom. We'll never know why. And it doesn't really matter now.

There's more than enough room for one more version of this fantastic song. Especially when sang this well. A sad loss. RIP

She was a wonderful and soulful singer and I miss that beautiful voice.
katcat67 2 years ago
anybody critisizing these selections should recall that Eva only had One release bearing her name, with another pending at the time of her death.

Eva's voice is so beautiful it makes you want to drive your car off a cliff.
Dylan said that about Roy Orbison but it definitely applies to Eva. That voice is so incredible it just brings tears to your eyes, don't it?

James Carr of the same song beats this one.
Cassidy is just good, not dynamite, like Carr.
TorresD 3 years ago
My friend Eva Cassidy could sing 10 circles around James Carr. Why do you think she slowed so many songs down? So she wouldn't overwhelm the song. Now go pic any version including Percy Sledge who sang it better than Carr also then come back and listen to this.
jsummerlin47 3 years ago 3
It's not a contest...just be grateful that she spread her beauty around on this one like so many others did.

Eva Cassidy was awesome, but I agree that Carr's version of this tune is the definitive one.
dk2bflo 3 years ago
The issue here is one of style rather than "she's bettern' him" Eva had a style and James Carr did an excellent take but in the end is the era they lived in. I love playing all the old tunes side by side. They both were GREAT!!!!!
nor888vast695 3 years ago 4
You are right about styles and the Periods in which they define how music will be played. Remember the theme from the Little Rascals. The sax's play slurred notes; nobody would listen to it now even though it is perfect in it's execution. The missing part; the 90% part is TALENT. And if you don't have talent you're already washed up.

Beautiful voice but Gram Parsons cover is the definitive.
vermezovic 3 years ago
I just recently discovered Gram Parsons and I absolutely love him. Eva's version is beautiful as well...Today's artists don't come close to this kind of talent...
butterflydeli 3 years ago 4
Parsons are a myth he had a spell on her voice, her duets with Emmylou Harris burn the air.Hear to Wilco,Drive by truckers the french genius Dominique A. or the spanish Nacho Vegas(this guy is from my city)all of them are quite talented, the music of our times still being good but you may to exert yourself a little bit more to find it.Greetings from the north of Spain.
