I went to a Horde feat way back then, Stood 4 feet from Morphine and had a blast. Unique sound an driving rock especially live. Then 2 weeks later, Sandman drops dead on stage. What a loss.
Seems all the comments pertain to the fact that DMB covered this song, and covered it better than the original i might add. Morphine is now popular again.
To be honest, I didn't even know that DMB was still around, let alone that they covered a Morphine song. Hell that's awesome, and I will keep that in mind the next time I hear a song of theirs that I cannot stand for those "eh, I will still respect them" purposes.
But to be frank, this is a Morphine song dammit. So if you don't mind...why don't all you Bonnaroo loving, no deodorant using, post-frat daddy aging beer snobs take it to the DMB links.
I think this song is great and even if I wasn't a Dave Matthews Band fan I'd still think they did it justice, their version was pretty damn good...but that's expected of a band as amazing as DMB.
Yes, I play the sax but that has nothing to do with it; anyone who knows music can tell that it sounds better. Jeff is one of the best sax players on the planet. DMB is not a "jam band," that's grateful dead and phish.
why would anyone be angry? cover just show dmbs admiration for morphine.
and bout makin it better - well aragment is the same, solos are the same, singin is the same - in fact allmost a direct copy. Only thing is there are some guitars so my question is - what the hell are you talkin about? -better it's a matter of taste that you can not argue, they simply made in they own style to remind ppl of a great morphine.
@gators409 And what lead you believe this, do you play sax?Dmb is a jam band different play styles are required, jam bands tend to wank around alot more. And because of this songs relaxed nature he wouldn't be ornamenting it.
@gators409 Its like the same thing ,so that doesn't make any sense. And covering a bands just shows that you think that bands songs is better than one you could do your self.not saying i don't like covers especially when a bands makes it they're own(that's why i love sublimes first album) your comment was just ignorant.
dave was performing at bonnaroo at the same time bob dylan was. as dylan was leaving the stage and dmb was getting ready to take it, this conversation transpired:
Dylan: "You gonna play Watchtower?"
Dave: "No, because you're here."
Dylan: "Well I didn't play it cause you're here!"
That's the kind of respect and admiration other artist's have for DMB. Do not speak of what you do not know.
@clausenator Haha... this conversation probably went down this way because Dylan is well aware that even though he wrote the song's genius lyrics, he cannot perform watchtower as well (vocally) as the majority of the artists that cover it....
@ajwolf621 Perform it as 'well'? He wrote it, he sings it exactly the way its best. Other can sing it different, and you can like it more, but you can't be "better" than the original content.
have you even heard DMB's version of it? It's really good, they do the song justice. It's not like they're Vanilla Ice trying to claim the bass line to Ice, Ice Baby as their original. All they try to do when they cover songs is show people where their influences come from. I would not have known about this song or this band had DMB not covered it, so thanks to them, I have discovered some fantastic music. You should be thanking them for letting more people know about Morphine
@clausenator I just read this and I feel exactly the same way! I would love if some band did a cover of a DMB song and got more people to discover how amazing Dave and the boys are!
What a crime that band like DMB would butcher this classic song. Mark Sandman was a God and his music will live on. It is a shame that DMB got credit for playing this a new song but uneducated fans. To me when DMB decided to cover this tune was an outrage to orginal Morphine fans that made the song a college radio classic. Mark Sandman would be turning over in his grave know this. Don't f--- with the classics and don't f--- with Morphine.
@kissmusiclover what? 1st of all what do mean a band like DMB their success came from college radio just like morphine's and if mark hadn't died they would have played at the DMB festival. Maybe u should learn a little bit more about music b4 calling out a a band as prestigious as DMB. its not like nickelback or third eye blind covered it, it was a fellow 90's college radio self made band. Mark sandman would have said sick cover but i do it better. did u even see there cover b4 u juged it
@dmbrhcp DMB is not prestigous. They are like nickelback of thrid eye blind just a bunch of musician that key ruining classics and giving the uneducated fans the notion that it their song and not cover. Mark Sandman lived, breathed, and die for HIS MUSIC. For a band that would tarnish thie classic that is a song which MOPRPHINE was about is a disgrace to Mark and not a tribute. If DMB want to cover other college band why don't they cover bands like OAR or Phish or Rusted Root.
@kissmusiclover well they are prestigious because they will be remembered and the fact that you think there like nickelback shows you have no knowledge of the bands music or history. Dmb is highly respected in the music industry, maybe you should watch before the music dies, and musicians like Neil young, Bela fleck, Tom morello, Warren Haynes, victor wooten, Maceo parker, Jeff Coffrin, Trey anastasio, Questlove, and hundreds of others are all fans and those guys aren't nobodies like you and i
@kissmusiclover Because DMB covers some songs doesnt mean theyre trying to ruin it or make people think its there song... Theres been a million times Dave has played watchtower and gone "This is a song by Bob Dylan" before they started. DMB is a group of unbelievably talented musicians and youre just ignorant.
@WEA41 Ignorant for having passsion to a band l like Morphine. So if I am ignorant for that you seem to be more igrnorant about DMB. Morphine was a group of unbelievably talented musicans that were ahead of their time. You are telling me for sticking up for a band that I watch and listened to during my college days and supported is ignorance. Then your vast ignorance of defending DMB - all though unbeliebable musicans is equally ignorant and DMB nevered announced 'Buena' was a cover in AC.
@kissmusiclover I never said anything about Morphine being not talented or a bad band so sticking up for your band is irrelevant. And just because he didnt announce it doesnt mean anything. People either knew the song or didnt but they knew it wasnt a DMB song.
@kissmusiclover he said "Morphine, good for the soul" after the song. i was there and was pumped because the covered it. my boss from my first job gave me two albums because i told him i really dig sax in rockbands one was cure for the pain the other was under the table and dreaming. a person can like or dislike whatever music they want but the have no right to tell another person what to like or dislike so step off ur hipster pedestal ur both Dmb and Morphine are bands of originality and talent
@kissmusiclover Dave actually made a shout out to Morphine after the song. Shows how little you know about DMB as they always give credit to covers and respect all those musicians.
They live and die for the music just as much as any classic band out there.
@kissmusiclover All 7 Morphine fans? Youre a dope...look how many Dave fans have come here out of curiosity. Ever think because DMB covered this, maybe there are a few new Morphine fans?
@kissmusiclover I read your comments and personally I think you're taking it way too seriously, you didn't make the music, man. Plus, now because of DMB, Morphine's original song and the band are getting new found recognition from people like myself, who never got the chance to hear this on the radio or see Morphine live. If you were a real fan you'd be happy that a band like DMB covered your favorite band's song. Don't be bitter, just enjoy the music!
This singer was also a construction worker, commercial fisherman and taxi driver before he started the band, and was stabbed in the chest in a taxi robbery and survived. Fucking badass!
"Introduce you to the Buena,Buena, Good, Good, Good"
The Devil that introduced me to the Buena, Buena, Buena introduced me to that thing, no need for Spanish at all. (What a song means is in the eye of the beholder, you know), So peace my friend no need for swearing.
Man i miss Mark, my last show i saw him play was at Vassar college in New York and did not get another chance. What an example of greatness.." you can do just as much with less, if you apply yourself real good"

@siemenbakker I'm so glad I got to see them live too. For me it was at Werchter, Belgium in 1995. Wish I could turn back time and relive it. That whole day was just great.
@flow2233 I am not sure but that is propably the same year I saw them. You had the Torhout Festival and after that the Werchter Festival, but with the same line up. Nowadays there's only the Werchter Festival. Just remember that it was a warm day and that I was tired from the first half of the day. So together with my sister I sat in the grass with a beer and watched Morphine start their set. That surely was a smooth and relaxing drug that got me on my feet again.
@frodus23 yea, like anyone knows them (well from personal experience).. awesome stuff... i often find myself *thinking* the lyrics in internal-relationship-life-debates!
I usually hate sax, but this song is soooo fucking cool! Morphine's "Cure For Pain" is such a fantastic album. I haven't explored their other albums yet. Although I've owned "The Night" for over 10 years, I've hardly listened to it. I guess it's time to slap it in my CD player!
Morphine has the best frakken music to listen to on a hot summer's day at sunset driving on a highway in the desert. Every time I hear Morphine, I'm reminded of that trip to Vegas I took years back. Man, they really have a unique sound.
I was turned on to Morphine by a guy at a retro shop in MA. I went in looking for a turntable, which I found, and I asked him to recommend some funky-ass bass heavy band. He handed me a Morphine tape. I was instantly hooked.
I saw Morphine at Clark University in Worcester, MA. I think it was in '92. Those damned Clarkies just stood around like 6th graders at a dance while my friends and I danced our faces off and had the best time. Morphine, of course, kicked ass.

This is such a horrible video, Christ. Especially for such a killer song. It's like a parody of 90s rock music videos, with the shakycam and the alternating b&w and color, and apparently edited by a blind person. Ah well, win some lose some.

@siemenbakker Yeah, they were good, love their sound. I really liked the line-up that year, with bands like the Cure, dEUS, Jeff Buckley, REM...

@dentpopcan he'd put his own basses together, in the beginning had only one string, later just two..

I saw them in a one-off concert in an intersection of Randolph Street during Taste Of Chicago 1998.
They flew in for this one show and flew back to finish recording Like Swimming.
Best $5 I've ever spent.
I dedicated the midnight hour to Morphine during my DJ shift the day he died, almost one year to the day after that show.
