@FireflyGeisha I guess you can say both,but if you say "this was heplful" you are implying that you used it only once in a particular situation.But if you say "this is helpful",you're implying that you can use it in different situations every time you need it.You can also say "this has been very helpful",in this case you would be using the present perfect tense.

And I am confused with using is and was.
ex:
should I say
This was helpful.
or
This is helpful.
