I totally despise so-called "artists" who sample/steal other people's creative work and use it to create monotone misogynistic self-aggrandizing bullshit rap crap -- if it's an art form, then most of it is bad art (tho there are exceptions, and I do have some favorites). In contrast, this kind of funk music was made to bring people together in a group ecstatic dance experience, which is absolutely to the greater good. Just sayin' ...
Peace Ms Melody of Boogie Down Productions used this sample also back in 1989 the track is called "Live on Stage". It was slammin back in the days. Real Hip Hop fo sho!!!
GStrong-I DO know what it is: ) but whats the crack with the Afrique version - if that is indeed what it is-of this tune?
On the compilation i have (lucky *** you-with the OG 45! -I wish it were 'mainstream' -i'd be in HMV tomorrow) it is definitely chubakos.
Interestingly I have another comp LP (classic funk mastercuts) that has "Miss Fatback" by Saundra Phillips and the backing to her vocals is Chubakos' "Boogie the Devil In...." which i have on another L.P Similar thing with this d'you think?
d'you know the sample where he actually says 'smack my bitch up' is by Ultramagnetic MC's? from Critical Beatdown:
"change my pitch up/smack my bitch up/like a pimp...."
An absolute classic piece of hiphop from 1988 - arguably the best year ever for hiphop and heavy on its funk samples too so well worth a listen. if you like funk you just couldn't not enjoy that LP. As Kool Keith says elsewhere "money is green plus the truth is the funky sound".
Actually Donald Byrd's - "The Little Rasti" is from -71 (the track is originally 17:49 min long!!!)
Also, one if not the greatest British hip-hop groups Hijack sampled this song from 0:42 to 0:47 in their track "The Syndicate Out of Jail" Should be on the video responses as well if accepted..
If you dig this, cCheck my video response Donld Byrd as well If my memory serves me well its recorded in the same year and just as OG funk but a with a Jazzy twist to it, its record in one take like most of this stuff in those days. The jam reminds me those hazy and shade clubs ot th 70's era.
afrique was the project name for the album "soul makossa," also released on mainstream in 1973 -- richard fritz is the composer of this monster tune. i believe "the chubukos" is the same thing, they needed a name under which they could release the single.
On one compilation this is by Afrique and on another by Chubakos!
Did they do a lot of covers like Booker T. or The Barkays or did lotsa folk cover their work like the Beatles? Eg:
I have Boogie the Devil in (Bump the Devil out) by Chubakos on a Brad Walker-compiled Playtime LP which is an instrumental version of Miss Fatback by Saundra Phillips on Classic Funk Mastercuts vol.3!!
The basis of so many hip hop and dance tunes - Tony Scott's Listen to the Big Band springs to mind, e.g.
