@HollywoodKendrick You're supposed to continue until the ref separates you both. The refs are supposed to stop as soon as he sees a tap, but back then they were really bad and took a long time to end the fight. Think about it... if you let go just because you felt your opponent tap on your body, but the ref doesn't see it, the fight will go on. Unless, of course, your opponent is honest enough to admit he was submitted - usually not the case. Remember chael sonnen and anderson silva?
@DJD2FRESH1993 his trying to make a point because back then jiu jitsu was disrespected by majority of people who didnt know what it was.. he would hold the lock for a while as he did in this clip to make a clear statement "dont fuck with gracie jiu jitsu" it wasnt a matter of him letting ppl know he won the fight but to let ppl to know that gracie jiu jitsu is a deadly art and should not be mocked capish"
@DJD2FRESH1993 Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but as I recall there was a fight when someone tapped and he let go and then the guy went back after Royce like it never happened and the ref didn't stop it. After that he made 100% sure it was done, let the ref pull him off.

In english: I believe that over the years you have become a better human being and progressed spiritually and mentally, because these images who knocks loose and you are not of great shame for reasons that I am Brazilian, Royce. There is a reason for this though, in one of his early fights he submitted an opponet but, the ref did not stop the fight. I understand this, but this is when there were no rules, no weight classes and absolutly no sportsmanship. They couldnt even air mma on telivision because it was so brutal. Well, Overeem is a heck of a lot bigger than Royce and is trained in the Gracie family art himself, yet I would never count a younger Royce out of any contest. Royce had an uncanny knack of not getting hit, either on his feet or especially on the ground. Royce in his prime (1993 - 2000) had some pretty slick transitions and nice Judo style takedowns, but that would be a problem with a guy the size of Overeem. Royce and BJJ are for losers, just like UFC and MMA. Do not confuse real combat of samurai aikijutsu/kenjutsu taugh to selected few like me by the Japanese with a TV show that has rules and "rounds". Let any fighter walk into any real dojo in Tokyo, and I promise you that any small old japanese sensei will take them out in seconds, as I have seen them do, and as I have done myself being a sensei for 15 years. Come over, I will make a video and post it here, of Gracie taken down or any other.
He is right. Until you have discovered for yourself the real WELSH ART of Llap-Goch you are a moving target. I'll make you a MASTER of LLAP-Goch ... the Secret Welsh ART of SELF DEFENCE that requires NO INTELLIGENCE, STRENGTH or PHYSICAL courage. The FANTASTIC SECRETS of the SECRET world-famous method of SELF DEFENCE, kept secret for centuries because of their DEADLY POWER to MAIM, KILL, SMASH, BATTER, FRACTURE, CRUSH, DISMEMBER, CRACK, DISEMBOWEL, CRIPPLE, SNAP and HARM!
You don't understand. Llap-Goch is an invincible discipline. IT is THE most DEADLY form OF SECRET self-DEFENCE that HAS ever been widely advertised and available to EVERYONE.
WHY ALL the CAPITALS?
Because THE most likely kind OF person TO answer THIS sort OF advertisement HAS less trouble under-STANDING words if they ARE written in BIG letters. It is an ANCIENT Welsh ART based on a BRILLIANTLY simple I-D-E-A, which is a SECRET.
@DSAoftheSS Ha ha I love the way people say "Learn the SECRETS of secret art" If the art is that fooking secret how come you know it? And id lay money on the fact that many others know the art as well. But fair play if you want to make money just say something is a secret of a secret.
@shizensamurai a Bjj practicionerr walks in a Tokyo dojo empty handed and your little japanese sensei wielding a samurai? Common...who's the losers now?
@shizensamurai lmfao time to wake up!!! wakey wakey!......i put my money on bjj or mma ....over you any day.....and i suppose you are a ninja turtle too?
The thing about Royce Gracie is that he kept holding on after the guys tapped for like 10 seconds. It's like a final "In your face!", or maybe he was stuck in andrenaline.
Look at you all kissing his arse u see all these mma wannabies all they do is jitsu nut they forget this guy ruled before there was a thing called ground and pound.
Royce is a hero, and above all a myth! Doubt those who wish ... The early UFC's were real battles, bloody, and almost no rules, can give us videos as dominated by fighters after Royce, suffered and grimacing after submissive and the judges did not care. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the most efficient of all the fighting, Royce is a God of War!
There is no most efficient marterial arts in battle. Cause in sports you cant see what would happen in real. If that guy was upon me and I would stab his eyes out he is unable to do much. Or break is arm wathever.
u guys cum str8 out off a comic strip, but seriously royce graice is bad fukkin ass bett u didny know all of the fights frm tha1st 2 minutes and the 1 at 2:24 are all n tha same tournerment (with no wait class) which gracie won top tht u jealous chink
Gracie was the embodiment of the phrase "size doesn't matter." He knew he couldn't slug it out with these huge guys, so he did something they didn't expect, he took them down and made them tap.

Royce is a punk. He went to Japan and got his butt kicked. That's because BJJ is junky copy of the real samurai martial art called aikijutsu which includes judo, jujutsu, and aikido. Origninal art proven in combat since hundreds of years ago. My aikijutsu dojo is Japanese, and we destroy all sissies that come in to show us how tough they are, including punks like Gracie. Little 100 pound old japanese, our senseis, can take them all out, and have done so. UFC is for losers.
@shizensamurai yea he got dominated by sakuraba, sakuraba inturn got destroyed by wandelei silva who in turn lost to chuck liddell, so whats your point?? lol.
Saku did not dominate him (if you actually watched the fight you would know that). Royce broke his foot sometime before the 16th round and had to retire on the stool. If the fight had been under normal Pride rules Gracie would have won by decision. Not defending anyone but TUF noobs who don't know their history annoy me.
@shizensamurai To be honest I don't think you have the right to talk shit about anyone, you clearly have no respect for a good fighter therefore loosing any credibility you claim to have. I would love to believe that the views you have expressed are the views of yourself and yourself alone but everyone in this forum can clearly see the 65 year old Japanese paedophile who claims to be the teacher of the worlds greatest martial arts hanging out the back of your ass playing you like a puppet.
@shizensamurai FUCK U KID ID LOVE TO SEE U GET YOUR ASS KICKED BY ALL THE FUCKING GUYS IN THE UFC PUSSY SO SHUT THE FUCK UP INTILL YOU LEARN HOW TO FIGHT U LITTLE BITCH
@shizensamurai Gracie jiu-jitsu is the most devistating martial arts. If you take the best gracie jiu-jitsu player vs your best art player it will definitely be Gracie jiu-jitsu that will take home the victory. And gracie jiu-jitsu has only been around like 60 years or so, and look how much it has developed. I see "BJJ" as the grapple's MMA today, BJJ is everything in grappling combined and that is MMA too but is aimed for striking.
@shizensamurai dude he beat sakuraba by unanimous decision the guy in japan the guy known as the gracie hunter, so you dont know what the hell you are talking about, the Gracies developed something that surpasses the original
@shizensamurai BJJ stands alone and was developed in Brazil to pretend like you invented a type of martial art is pretentious and stupid. Most Martial arts ar derived from others with unique moves sprinkled in
@shizensamurai BJJ was teached to Gracie Family, by Mitsuyo Maeda, who came from Kodokan. Therefore BJJ actually came from ne-waza that was laterly refined by Jigoro Kano. We have to respect Gracie Family, since they kept the old ne-waza safe from Olympic/sportive path of Judo, but we have to know they did not invent it.
Jigoro Kano->Mitsuyo Maeda-> Carlos Gracie->Helio Gracie->Royce Gracie
@shizensamurai youre right but he goes to japan old and tired Sakuraba kick his ass 2 times but i think cant do it if royce was younger as japanese i dont know who wins
aikijutsu is your ass... Who are you to talk trash about the Gracies? One more retarded hidden behind a computer, saying what would never say personally, face to face. So you think that all the world is wrong and only you are right about the history of BJJ? A Japanese bronw belt of tradicional Japanese jiu-jitsu visited us two months ago and was terminated by a white belt of BJJ, and you want to tell me that the art practiced by maeda or kano is the same practiced today? Poor retarded!
thats like a wealterweight vs a heavyweight and Gracie's jiu jitsu bested Kimo's boxing, and while Kimo was bloody and with almost a broken arm,Gracie simply left with a limp, won the match 3 minutes and 15 seconds into it...now i dunno if thats amazing to anyone else but to me that was beast
God I hated Gracie! He was such a piece of shit breaking peoples arms and shit well after several taps and never once got DQ'd for it...complete scum bag sportsmanship!
@8MCDonalds8 well he once let go because Ken Shamrock tapped but the ref. didn't see so he let the fight resume stood up. Royce wanted reassurance that he wouldn't be made to stand up so he waited until the ref. stopped the fight.
If you're entering a tournament where it's pretty much no holds barred then you'd expect pain.
@Khonnell That's the one defense I can see but if someone taps just let go and walk away while they lay there in humiliation...but I think Shamrock was tellin the ref he didn't tap even tho he did 5 times lol. There have also been several times when he wasn't letting go regardless of who told him the fight was over so I have the feeling his intention was unsportsmanlike more so than "just in case" type thikning.
This is the most despicable form of fighting I ever saw. The guy's searching the opponent's waist all the time. You throw a punch in that "Superman" moment to his cranium and the fight is over. But I could be completely wrong :)
POUND fer POUND and all around , up and down .... No question about it , after seeing Royce Gracie in action, absolutely no reason to doubt it... This man is a Human Terminator .… When the sport of modern refereed hand to hand fighting was at it most brutal as in anything geauxs . He had no equal ... It was amazing to watch a average sized
Man. Destroying giant loudmouthed muscle men. The man is highly intelligent soft spoken teacher and fantastic coach.
Umm just to clarify, this is pretty much the first time BJJ was outside of the Gracie dojo/Brazil, when this came along to the early UFC the boxers and wrestlers had no idea what the hell to do, they had a small guy putting them in agony and they couldn't do a thing to escape or counter.
@whymeprodcz no not the early stuff, he made a one match comeback and lost to matt hughes because he was not in tune with the modern UFC, he was ready for extended unrelenting brutality not tatical fights.
It doesn't matter if they hadn't faced grappling before, they still weighed way more then him. Plus I doubt they hadn't faced any sort of jujitsu before, even though BJJ wasn't famous back then, jujitsu was well known. Because of him, now most MMA fighters in the octagon has some sort of BJJ techniques. He definitely had a huge impact on the sport.
When people say that gracie held his submissions too long when the opponent tapped out, should watch the earlier fights. Especially ufc 01, ken shamrock had this whole thing that he didn't "totally" tap out and became a dispute, but luckily not a huge thing. Also, if you don't notice in fights these days, the fighters will keep punching to ensure a real win.
@SuperstarFx ya he dose he just dosnt care lmao i know i dont when i get into fights if i get some one in a head lock or arm bar i dont stop till hes ether K.Oed or theres somthing brokin >:-)
I still like UFC but this is when it was fun to watch no weight class no rules all out brawl, then some man named John McCain came along and screwed that all up.
All the idiots whining about the taps need to shut up. You are comparing it the highly regulated UFC now. Back then it was no rules...no holds barred. It was more like an insane fighting pit. The ref couldn't even stop the fight until UFC 3. It was either tapout, throw in the towel, or death. You can't compare it to now.
@orange105 exactally man. Plus the fighters all knew what they were getting into. They are fucking fighters. These people need to stop complaining. What did you want Royce to do? Let up? You let up for a second and any one of these fighters could take advantage of it.
@orange105 ur wrong about one thing, refs were alowed to stop fights since the begining, in the first round of the first ufc, this sumo wrestler got TKO'd by this kick boxer and yes i say tko cuz da ref broke it up.
@ozeol well at the time gracie was i believe the first to use gracie jujitsu so none of his opponents really knew what he was doing, from the early fights ive seen a lot come from boxing origins it seems by how much stand up. as of today i think he would have a rough time because the majority of ufc fighters use jujitsu. he also wouldnt be in heavies just FYI, he is not that big of a guy. if i remember correctly they only had one weight class. he would be in middle weight.
In addition to having his ear bitten by the savate/muay thai guy, look how long the ref was taking to react to some of those taps! Royce almost got robbed against Shamrock when the ref didn't see the tap and Royce let go of the hold too soon. The early MMA judges were learning as much as the fighters about BJJ.
Royce is the best of all times, and there were no crappy fighters, there were and still are crappy martial arts (as boxing and wrestling), and he was the most complete fighter ( 3 times the ULTIMATE FIGHTER) for his time, thank you royce for taught us how to become a ULTIMATE FIGHTER
@tony762000 Not to disrespect your opinion, but you shouldnt say that martial arts are crappy just because royce beat a couple of guys representing their translations of the style they've chosen. Every wise and humble practitioner of martial arts and kung fu knows that it is not the practice to blame, but the practitioner. It is a given fact that translations of one system will always be different depending on body type such as stiff, power, flexible, or speed.
@Rocksolid178 Iam agree with you, may be I was a little disrespect to martial arts, but in my opinion, NOW anyone who mants to be a ultimate fighter needs to be a Mixed Martial Artist, and use the best of all the martial arts, not just one, that is why I say that any martial art by itself lacks of too many ways and has a lot of weak points. Thats why no one-style fighter have a title in the UFC, and nobody use its cobra-monkey-tigger-dragon-etc... style in the octagon, because is useless here.
Whatever people say gracies changed the world of martial arts.
And this comes out from a wing tsun, shotokan judo/wrestling martial artist.

LLAP-GOCH was developed in Wales because for the average Welshman, the best prospects of achieving a reasonable standard of living lie with the acquisition of the most efficient techniques of armed robbery. The best form of DEFENCE is ATTACK (Clausewitz) and the most VITAL element of ATTACK is SURPRISE (Oscar HAMMERstein).

I see "BJJ" as the grapple's MMA today, BJJ is everything in grappling combined and that is MMA too but is aimed for striking.

kgsolaman5000 1 year ago
@shizensamurai BJJ was teached to Gracie Family, by Mitsuyo Maeda, who came from Kodokan. Therefore BJJ actually came from ne-waza that was laterly refined by Jigoro Kano. We have to respect Gracie Family, since they kept the old ne-waza safe from Olympic/sportive path of Judo, but we have to know they did not invent it.

i remember when Gracie went up against Kimo
Gracie(at the time)-"6'0",174lbs
Kimo(at the time)-"6'5",250lbs
thats like a wealterweight vs a heavyweight and Gracie's jiu jitsu bested Kimo's boxing, and while Kimo was bloody and with almost a broken arm,Gracie simply left with a limp, won the match 3 minutes and 15 seconds into it...now i dunno if thats amazing to anyone else but to me that was beast

God I hated Gracie! He was such a piece of shit breaking peoples arms and shit well after several taps and never once got DQ'd for it...complete scum bag sportsmanship!
8MCDonalds8 1 year ago
@8MCDonalds8 well he once let go because Ken Shamrock tapped but the ref. didn't see so he let the fight resume stood up. Royce wanted reassurance that he wouldn't be made to stand up so he waited until the ref. stopped the fight.
If you're entering a tournament where it's pretty much no holds barred then you'd expect pain.
Khonnell 1 year ago
@Khonnell That's the one defense I can see but if someone taps just let go and walk away while they lay there in humiliation...but I think Shamrock was tellin the ref he didn't tap even tho he did 5 times lol. There have also been several times when he wasn't letting go regardless of who told him the fight was over so I have the feeling his intention was unsportsmanlike more so than "just in case" type thikning.

He has had a fighter tap and the fight not stop.
Thats why he holds his submissions even after they tap till the ref stops.
Plus it's super intimidating, i wouldn't want to be the guy next in line.
vincekooyman 1 year ago

DAWRASTLER 1 year ago
In addition to having his ear bitten by the savate/muay thai guy, look how long the ref was taking to react to some of those taps! Royce almost got robbed against Shamrock when the ref didn't see the tap and Royce let go of the hold too soon. The early MMA judges were learning as much as the fighters about BJJ.

Royce is the best of all times, and there were no crappy fighters, there were and still are crappy martial arts (as boxing and wrestling), and he was the most complete fighter ( 3 times the ULTIMATE FIGHTER) for his time, thank you royce for taught us how to become a ULTIMATE FIGHTER
tony762000 1 year ago
@tony762000 Not to disrespect your opinion, but you shouldnt say that martial arts are crappy just because royce beat a couple of guys representing their translations of the style they've chosen. Every wise and humble practitioner of martial arts and kung fu knows that it is not the practice to blame, but the practitioner. It is a given fact that translations of one system will always be different depending on body type such as stiff, power, flexible, or speed.
Rocksolid178 1 year ago
@Rocksolid178 Iam agree with you, may be I was a little disrespect to martial arts, but in my opinion, NOW anyone who mants to be a ultimate fighter needs to be a Mixed Martial Artist, and use the best of all the martial arts, not just one, that is why I say that any martial art by itself lacks of too many ways and has a lot of weak points. Thats why no one-style fighter have a title in the UFC, and nobody use its cobra-monkey-tigger-dragon-etc... style in the octagon, because is useless here.
tony762000 1 year ago
