@dadadevo Yeah I agree with you dadadevo, but I also think Dave Longstrength did capture the emotional tone or spirit of the black flag versions of the songs. His tone definitely isn't sarcastic... Just from an artistic perspective, I think it's cool that he managed to make such an art piece out of the album and convey his own message. But again, I don't think that message is "It's sad how fucked up the people who wrote these songs were, we should rise above them." I think DLo sympathizes.
This looks like one of those "Dirty Projectors shred" videos, except you don't even have to replace the music with fake out-of-tune mumbling. T.E.R.R.I.B.L.E.
It means that his version of it is boring. How is this spitting on hardcore? It doesn't mock it in any way. The people who are spitting on hardcore are the douchebags who wear camo shorts, studded belts, and wear MOSH hoodies. They are killing hardcore, not Dave Longstreth.
@iamlameduck Room 13 is not a bedtime song. Room 13 is about the desperation, rage, and the descent into insanity. The band is spitting on the song when they willfully disregard those emotions, when they eschew the original message in the name of making elitist indie kids feel artsy.
@lalalaboomdeeay Dave Longstreth is a long-time black flag fan. I think instead of denigrating the song, he's approaching misery, loneliness, and depression from a standpoint that is more appropriate for the 21st century. I don't have a problem with hardcore, but there are certain shades of emotions that constant fuzz and distortion, spitting and yelling just doesn't cover. If you love the song so much, i would think you could appreciate homage to prolific bands like Black Flag.
@fyasko46 Maybe my view of this song has been shaded by all the people I know who listen to Mr. Longstreth's music. They're scared of hardcore, and are appreciative that The Dirty Projectors would make an acceptable watered down version. They say things like "music that is more appropriate for the 21st century" in their haughty "I went to art school" tone. They like "bedtime" songs like this. Songs that water down misery into a nice artsy, "have a good night sleep" package.
@lalalaboomdeeay how is it elitist/self righteous to cover songs with a different emotional tone than how it was originally? yer probably just trollin, but it seems like yer making value judgements, and asking people to fit into something you can personally understand...and when you dont understand it you assume it's coming from a place of pretension rather than joy or fun. im not a fan of the black flag songs, but i like the dp ones. how is there something inherently wrong with that?
I dont think it's elitist or pretentious.

Aside from Room 13 (which is a serious bedtime song), there isn't much to hate there. Unless you hate his voice... then it's all to hate.

the fact that room 13 would ever be called a bedtime song is scary to me. this asshole spat on hardcore.
