Autos cost a good $2k+ on some models, 1 mpg is never going to offset that, and those figures come simply from the taller or more gears. 8 speed manual w/ same gear ratios = same fuel economy if not better than 8 speed dsg or even CVT depending on how you drive it, and you can drive it however way you want it to, thats the beauty

I laugh every time I see someone stall, from the soccer mom halfway through an intersection or rail crossing, to the racing driver on the starting line. I've never stalled or bunny-hopped once, because I've never bought a car with a transmission that was outdated in the 1950's...
My dad taught me how to drive in a 4-spd manual transmission; and own and daily drive a 6-spd manual and plan to teach my children how to drive in a manual transmission. I agree, fuel economy will lessen the number of them on the road, but they will not die. SUCK-BANG-BLOW...&SHIFT!!!
No, not 90% of the cars in the United States are automatic - the problem is more serious than that! Manual to auto in the US is 23:1 now! Most cars can't even be had with a manual. Americans are not drivers.
And racing and dual clutches are not a nearly good enough reason for the death of manuals, how many % of drivers actually do track days? Not a lot. The userbase for trackdays is simply too small. So it all gets down to the economy. That and a broader range of electornic helpers (adaptive cruise control, emergency self stopping, etc. - all of these are not possible on a manual).
Hit the nail on it's head, the economy will kill the manual transmission. And i agree, there will be some cases left out for purists. But i don't agree with maintenance and costs, that are supposedly higher for a manual. Manuals, if you're not a completely useless driver, will last far longer than an automatic. The first thing to go will be the clutch, and clutces can in some cases with highway driving do ~200.000 miles. You'd need to change the transmission fluid in an auto box way before that.
Are you forgetting about Mini? They actually have come out and said that their cars are better with a stick. They even went as far as offering an additional $500 promotional discount to those that chose to row their own.
Well it depends if the manual is going to disappear, if you are going electric sure! In US maybe, in Europe i guess not that soon. I live in Europe and most cars sold hare are manual. I own an 2008 Skoda Octavia II, and I've done over 99245 miles with an manual drive, and I hadn't to do any expensive maintenance (only an oil change because an seal). So I think manual is not going away any time soon.
I feel the same way abt my 86 944 n/a. It just brings things back to basics. I feel like I am apart of the car not just sitting in a car. I like to be able to feel every shift, rev, and every moment of fear and joy when I'm behind the wheel.
Yep I need to learn how to drive Manual transmission. I know how in concept but never have driven a manual because the only people who own manual cars are afraid I will fuck up their transmission.
manual in my opinion is the best. better traction, better fuel mileage, however some people shouldn't be driving a manual transmission. you know who im talking about. the guy or gal that lets their car rev to 8000 rpms before shifting ya those people
@supermonkey366 I'm female and I probably drive better than you with a manual transmission. Have fun driving in straight lines with your little mustang.
@supermonkey366 thumbs up if you're thinking "Manuals pwn automatics cuz I say so," Because that is just another textbook cop out of an excuse to hate upon automatics.
I think manual transmissions are going away because we no longer drive our cars. What most people do is battle traffic and shifting gears during traffic is a major pain. It's a shame because when you drive a manual, you are really driving.
Subaru sells quite a few Manuals... I have a Subaru, I Injured my knees and right ankle while on deployment. i came back and STILL bought a manual trans Subaru. it hurts when i am on traffic, but i won't give it up. manual drivers are safer on the road and are involved in WAY fewer accidents than Automatics. the day i can't drive My subaru or Manual in general, interest in driving will fade. I don't want to drive.
It was said in this episode that there are higher maintenance costs associated with a manual. I don't think that's strictly true. Yes, every once in a great while you will need to replace a clutch (depending on car, ~$100 - 500+ every 50-100k miles or so) and you MIGHT need to replace the synchros on a gear or two (maybe $100 apiece every 100k+ miles, depending on use?), but automatics generally need to be completely replaced around 200k miles, sometimes half that, costing thousands
nissan and hyundai makes around %40 of their car in manual transmission .... they haven't check any record ,, also more then 50% of sports cars are manual .,, corvette .R8 M3. genesis coupe , S2000 , 911 ...
who else is incredibly annoyed when people say "my car is a manual and automatic" ya shut the fuck up, its an auto. no clutch = no fun! no heal toe, gay down shifts and shitty burnouts!
Im 15 years old and just got my permit a month ago. And im dying to drive a manual. When my parents get me a car I hope it will be a manual. Why? because I always hear my dad and other people who drive stick say if you are a "good" driver you drive stick. And seeing as most of my friends won't drive stick it also gives me a reason to not let them drive my car.
I am glad to see that you guys are not sitting there with two open laptops with non-show related material on it. I say non-show related material, because when they are there you never use them. Also I love the skull on the table, because its akward and makes people complain, and for no other reason its perfect. Also the manual transmission is dying because of the puss-a-facation of america and men refuse to put their(clutch) foot down. Thanks for staying relavant.
I don't understand why it is that people have to be so bitter about the supposed death of the manual transmission. One thing that should keep you gearheads out there happy are the auto-manual transmissions, you still have good fuel economy but in a much sportier package. Seriously, why are you guys so bitter about the death of the manual transmission when there are better, more efficient alternatives to be had. Sure heel-toe habits are sporty, but it does get old when you have to always do it.
@Iamwolf134 oh really now? hold on here, bear with me, im gonna put caps lock on to show my rage at your silly comment, okay? imagine me screaming 3 inches away from your face. here goes: I DONT GIVE A HOLY FLYING FUCK BOUT 'SPORTINESS' AND 'FUEL ECONOMY'. MANUALS ARE ABOUT THE FUN YOU GET FROM ACTUALLY MOVING A MECHANICAL LINKAGE BETWEEN YOU AND THE CAR, NOT SOME FLIMSY PIECE OF SHIT PLASTIC PADDLE THAT SENDS A GODDAMN ELECTRIC IMPULSE
Vector is dead like the dead head you guys make me look at constantly. What happened to moving out of the living room guys? The joy of driving a manual can never be over shadowed by any version of the automatic trans. Like you said it's the feel of being connected to the car and the road that it provides! Great show
Yes, I am American, and yes I drive an 03 Jetta with 5 speed manual transmission. I will never have it any other way. My first car was a 5 speed, it's sad because even my parents cars are auto's. (My dad loves taking my car whenever he can)
The sad truth is that yes manuals are on the decline due to technology and the push for the best fuel economy
Heel toeing in my 1990 944 S2 Porsche will be forever one of my favourite things to do. On an open road and going for drives with the porsche club up through the mountains i could not thing of anything more id want then my three pedals, steering wheel and my gear stick. Theyre is a reward to properly driving a car, me and my parents fought over who would drive the old porsche over the 2008 Audi quattro TT with a flappy paddle gear box. Skydiving is useless but people still do it, manuals liveon.
I don't understand this American mentality. If you like driving, why give away the most engaging activity, which is gear shifting, to some machine and computer?
I absolutely love driving my BMW. I would do it for living if I could.
Sure, automatic are 0.01 sec quicker, the car goes 5 km/h faster, etc.
I will never buy an automatic. The driving experience is so much richer with three pedals and several gears to play with during the trip.
Automatic is only good for Americans and for old people.
@geek77rus Ok Euro douchebag, the average commuting driver prefer automatics, NOT THE ENTHUSIASTS. I believe it was Dodge or Ford or someone that said that a huge majority of buyers of pony cars (Mustangs, Camaors, and Challengers) GREATLY prefer manual transmissions over automatics. Moms and Dads? Automatics. Automotive enthusiasts? Always has been manuals, unless you drag race.
@pwkid Sorry man, but the "average commuter" in Europe drives a manual. That's the difference between the American and European "commuter" - we enjoy the process of driving while you simply get you bottoms from point A to point B.
And these guys are supposed to be "enthusiasts", not average commuters, and they promote automatic and say manual will be gone? I can't even take them seriously anymore.
@geek77rus Lol, look. First off, our roads are different. Have you driven in America? It's mostly straight lines for miles and miles upon miles. In Europe, maybe you guys have different types of roads. Second, I believe some, if not most, European countries require the driving test to be done in manual. In America it doesn't really matter, so most people choose to drive an automatic, which I've personally done so that I could take my time.
@pwkid Straight lines for miles put you in top gear and you drive just like if it was automatic. No difference there.
Yes, some countries make you take the test with manual, and why do you say that "it doesn't matter in the US"? American drivers don't need to be able to drive any car in emergency?
If you demanded for Americans to take their driving test with manual - there would be 5 tmes less drivers on the roads.
P.S. Can you even drift an automatic? That just can't be fun :-(
@geek77rus Lol....you're not getting the point are you. What, everyone is supposed to be an enthusiast? Some people like manuals (me) and some people don't (a lot of others). Why make it a god damn point that "Oh I drive a manual, you don't, therefore your inferior and your stupid and retarded because you don't know the joys of shifting gears"? To make yourself feel awesome?
Bottom line is: I enjoy shifting my own gears, some people don't. Who gives a shit.
@pwkid If you don't give a shit, why post here? In Europe the price of manual vs automatic is pretty much the same, new or used. Very little difference. Only few old people buy automatic. There is no such definition as "enthusiast" on our streets - everybody drives a manual. I don't know a single person who drives an automatic. Automatic gearbox is definitely not on my shopping list.
@pwkid That's your problem. And anyway, American-made automatic trannies are absolute crap, I don't know why you even defend the whole theory. Aren's you supposed to be standing up for the whole "American automotive industry" and shit? The few good American cars all have manual transmission by the way.
@geek77rus@geek77rus Ok bro, go and sip your wine and have some more cheese. Dude, like I said, manufacturers respond to the market and the enthusiast market demands a manual option for enthusiast cars. If the European market wants to have a manual option for every car, that's fucking great. If Americans feel like an auto will do for daily driving, that's alright by me.
I guess in Europe your fart smells better as well.
@pwkid Well, if you want to be mean... I'll have some wine with cheese, and you go get youself a fig greasy hamburger. That must be why our farts smell better :-) Dude, you asked for it!
And thank you for confirming my very first post - automatic IS good enough for Americans (and for old people).
@pwkid Yeah, let's just keep it at that. I'd say we finally gained agreement on something. I hope your driver's culture will not completely exclude the Automatics, and that the Europeans become more open to this suggestion, too.
@pwkid have to agree with geek77rus all people i know own manuals and i drive a manual every day and my mom and dad both drive manuals everyday and ask most people in europe people will want a manual over a auto. ive lost repect for these guys to shame on them. long live the manual for those who want to drive.
Well I believe most cars here in Europe are still MAnual transmission and one has to pay an extra fee for automatic transmission. Admittedly you two did concentrate on the US were i have only met a hand full of people that new how to drive a Maual. and even less who even had one. and most of them I met on a Hot Rod Powertour.
I promise to drive a manual car for the rest of my life(unless it's a rental car or a friend's car). Btw, when on a track during a track day, it's more about having fun driving fast than getting the fastest possible lap you can, IMO.
autos are sooo boring,Manuals are better.and if Manuals are going to be kinda extinct then i better keep my baby in the garage intill i have the only manual out in the street.
I bought my car because it had a manual. Sure it is a lame kia, but it makes me happy to drive it. It may not be a sports car in any way shape or form but it is a 2010 with a stick and I love every minute in it.
I was lucky enough to find a base model 2002 Cougar V6 with low miles last year. No ABS, no traction control, and a proper 5-speed. I have never seen another Cougar with a stick shift except mine. It's a wonderful car to drive, if not very quick. I do not want to drive an automatic until I'm too old and crippled to drive a manual. SAVE THEM!
i'm not a pro driver andi don't aspire to be, but for practicality's sake, i'd go with an automatic for driving in the city - if you're ever driven a manual in a stop and go traffic for more than 5 hours, you know what i mean. however, on long distance trips, say going into rural areas, i'd go for the manual because it's more engaging and actually helps keep my attention on the road
manual transmissions are the best especially for a sports car. Even when your starter goes out with a slight push and put it in gear the car will start. I do hope the manual transmission doesn't die...like my mom used to say who ever can drive a maunal transmission can drive anything.
personally i love my mr2 mk1, (1986) its sooo much fun to drive, and nice to drive, i fell soooo conected to the car, no power steering, M/T, Mid engine, no Ac, no cruse controll, and no ABS...
I miss my poor 5spd Impreza Outback Sport, goddamn was that fun to drive. I loathe automatics and especially CVTs... would never want to drive anything else
I disagree with Alex. I LOVE my manual. I have the 6 speed X-Runner and I wouldn't drive an automatic unless I HAD to like JF said you might HAVE to drive a manual.
I will be that guy who specifically seeks out a manual shift car when buying a new one. If I cannot find a good new manual shift car, I will just seek for an older, still in good condition car.
As said, even as I bought a truck, I opted for a manual shift.
Yes, manual will soon be dead. Sad. (I drive a manual) Review Forza 4 already Alex, you said it yourself you hate Gran Trismo and Forza is your favorite! Also, you should do an episode over Koenigsegg, not vector.
Manual transmissions are going away for 2 reasons. Fuel economy, and the fact that people, especially Americans are lazy. They don't want to have to shift. Plain and simple.
I'm 25 and I'm driving a manual in LA, I feel great and lucky that I bought a manual when driving on Mulholland dr., but sometimes I want to kill my self driving down on I405...
It's okay for now..I'm still young, I can still feel my leg after 2 hours of traffic jam, but Im definitely getting a DCT when I'm 30, no doubt
i know that we are a dieing breed, us men(and women) that prefer the real driving experience associated with a manual transmission and no computer assists. i personally think yes they will become scarce but no there not going anywhere. while i do not have a sportscar of yester year to support my argument i will say this, about 7 months ago i bought a 2011 jetta sel with a 5 speed mt. if volkswagen did not offer a stick in the jetta or golf-gti i would have simply went elsware to find it.
"Wah! I can't be bothered to use my right hand to shift (left drive), I'm too busy eating and texting! Furthermore I'm not in shape enough to work the clutch AS WELL as the brake and gas... Boo hoo!"
^--What I hear when people say "I prefer automatic."--^
anyone else thought that Alex was rolling blunt with what ever he was playing with in his hands? LOL I wish it wasn't dying but sadly manuals are. driving my girl's car my left leg bored!!!
Here is a stat for you: 180 new drivers from Indian Hills High School class of '06. 165 of them got thier licenses. ~140 of them got new cars (let's assume a 50/50 split between girls and guys). 3 of them where manual: me in a saab 9-3, a friend in an m3, and a girl whose dad owns a car dealership.
I agree with the pure driving thing with your Porsche. I feel the same way when I drive my '90 miata. No abs, no tcs, no aids at all. Just a steering wheels, a gear shift, and three pedals and a seat.
As long as people continue to try driving manuals, manuals will exist. People who learn to drive one prefer it over an automatic almost immediately, and anyone who talks with them will realize it. Just this past Wednesday, one of my female friend's parents bought her a new car, a Suzuki SX4. In a 6-speed. She had begged for a manual in her next car, though did not expect a car so soon, and is ecstatic. She drove home, learned in a day, and drove it back. People who love driving love Manual
Automatic transmissions are boring and droll. Every young driver should be forced to drive a manual transmission, not only can it be fun, but it also makes you more conscience of the road. No manufacture should get rid of the manual transmission. If safety is such a concern of a lot of manufactures, stop producing so many automatics, make more manual
I believe that the manual transmission is dead (at least in America). I believe that it has a lot to do with our culture. People don't want to deal with the complexity of shifting and driving. It seems like everyone is too busy doing something else. For example at least 9 out 10 times when I am driving and I see a female driver she is on her cell phone (or doing her hair, makeup, etc). I love to drive and I own a manual, but most people drive to get from point A to point B.
Driving an automatic just doesn't make me feel like as connected to the road. I've never driven a duel clutch flappy paddle for comparison, but I'm sure i will keep the same mindset.
Maybe in US, but you always preferred automatic transmission because it requires less skill and effort. Manual transmissions are very popular elsewhere, plus they are cheaper - that matters in developing countries. In Europe people like manuals because they give you more driving fun - just as Alex said.
I think what you guys failed to mention is that manual transmissions are cheaper to manufacture for the econobox line of cars and will be still heavily used in the cheaper car markets in countries like China, India, and other countries around the world.
No one in the show ever heard Subaru 60% of there car is a manual that include suv and wagons and wrx/sti and there still making it dsg might be good but service is 3 times more
Using an automatic transmission doesnt make any people lazy. Thats just like saying everyone who uses the internet instead of books is stupid. While some of that theory may be true, things like automatic transmissions and the internet were put in front of us to make things easier to do. No it doesnt mean its always better or always as fun, but it is the definition of innovation and how we move forward in the way we live life. They both have their advantages and disadvantages.
@kozen365 Like saying the internet makes people stupid? No, it is like saying the internet makes people lazy, and it does. It is immediately noticeable for motorcyclists. People who drive automatic cars tend to be more dangerous. They pay less attention to the road, to their surroundings, and most importantly (to me at least) motorcyclists. Talking on their phone, doing their makeup. Manual car drivers tend to give you extra space and extra attention. I think it is due to automotive enthusiasm.
@Chace1126 That is true. And im not saying that all people who drive automatics have been misjudged and are secretly good drivers... some of the genuinely suck... but its not all the fact that they dont shift gears. I have driven a manual and would like to become better at it because its the ideal driving experience, but for now i do drive an automatic and it doesnt make me any less aware of my surroundings... at least i dont think so lol. im an alert driver weather in an auto or manual.
Americans are just lazy and that reason for the death of the manual in this country. You can make the "track day" argument but there the average track day guy is going to improve lap times way faster by hitting apexes and smooth driving rather then because his car can shift .2 secs faster then a manual. I love my manual and i will never buy an auto. Fuel econ could play a role but me I take driving pleasure over one or two mpgs any day. Cost manuals are usually cheaper not more.
although this video is about cars, alex's statement about vinyl records sounding better than mp3's is NOT ENTIRELY TRUE. for music that was originally recorded for vinyls and then transferred to digital hes right, but music that is digitally produced today will not sound better on vinyl as compared to being played on a cd or through whatever medium one chooses.
My dad made me learn to drive in a 5 spd(I hope FLD readers know that means manual) car. He said "when you are in a manual car, you are driving. when you are in an automatic, you are mearly pointing the vehicle." When I got the car I wanted, it wasn't available in a manual transmission. I never felt like I was in control. Manuals do suck for traffic jams though. Feet get tired of pressing the clutch/changing from N to 1st/2nd.
"Double-clutch transmissions will always most certainly be faster than any manual out there..." I have only two words to say in response to this ridiculous statement: SEQUENTIAL GEARBOX. And yes, a sequential gearbox IS a manual transmission because it does require the use of a clutch pedal, and the MANUAL manipulation of a gear lever.
Also: BAN FLAPPY-PADDLES IN ROAD CARS!! They are a complete waste of time unless you're a Formula 1 driver.
"The speed of the shift is not relevant to the average driver or person" - Alex Roy
Dual Clutch, faster shift = better fuel economy = will matter to masses.
Everyone wants the MT live, but lets face it, AT with modern tech we should embrace. That's what racing is about Fun, Competion, Development, and Speed, which we all love and why we call ourselves 'gear heads'.
I don't think manuals will ever die. Even up against newer automatics I believe manuals will always be able to handle more power and let you get more out of your vehicle. I drive a manual Dakota myself and I love it~!!!
I grew up with manual transmissions; in Germany it was long time the way to go. Fuel economy was better, performance was better in the manual. This has changed. While I have never driven a dual clutch performance car [and did a manual performance car] I can't really imagine that you have the same controls.
However for most people, it will be more important, that performance and fuel economy is better. If then the automatic is cheaper, manual will die [pretty much like the record player].
I'll never buy an automatic, manual is better. I feel more involved when driving and I coulnd care if automatic is better fuel wise. Manual = pure driving
Alex your words, "Infinitely decaying device" is in fact your ears and believe me when you were in your teens or even maybe early 20's you may have been able to occasionally pick the difference between vinyl, CD or MP3 but as you are fast approaching 40 I don't think so buddy! Get out of the river!!!
I have an '11 Holden VE SSV ute with a 6spd manual and it is everything that i wanted. Driving it through the Adelaide Hills shifting through the gears makes you more connected to the road but... on the other side what lets it down for me is driving through everyday traffic. This is why i believe the manual will phase out but not die completely, instead move to off road SUV's, sport and collectable 'purest' cars, whilst everyday cars will eventually consist of DCT and CVT only.
@thiagov6123 ordinary people that is not people that works with sounds. but honestly i heard a vynil record before and it sounded warmer than the digital... i dont know why but it does.
lol comments about auto = laziness.. xD im super lazy but i still love manual! and wanna get one already x.x

I don't want to drive.

msr157 3 months ago
It was said in this episode that there are higher maintenance costs associated with a manual. I don't think that's strictly true. Yes, every once in a great while you will need to replace a clutch (depending on car, ~$100 - 500+ every 50-100k miles or so) and you MIGHT need to replace the synchros on a gear or two (maybe $100 apiece every 100k+ miles, depending on use?), but automatics generally need to be completely replaced around 200k miles, sometimes half that, costing thousands

Always has been manuals, unless you drag race.
pwkid 3 months ago
@pwkid Sorry man, but the "average commuter" in Europe drives a manual. That's the difference between the American and European "commuter" - we enjoy the process of driving while you simply get you bottoms from point A to point B.
And these guys are supposed to be "enthusiasts", not average commuters, and they promote automatic and say manual will be gone? I can't even take them seriously anymore.
geek77rus 3 months ago
@geek77rus the market for manual american cars is dying fast. Im sure they wont die in Europe but in America Im sure they will phase out.
MangoSmoothie16 3 months ago
@geek77rus Lol, look. First off, our roads are different. Have you driven in America? It's mostly straight lines for miles and miles upon miles. In Europe, maybe you guys have different types of roads. Second, I believe some, if not most, European countries require the driving test to be done in manual. In America it doesn't really matter, so most people choose to drive an automatic, which I've personally done so that I could take my time.
Different conditions require different stuff bro.
pwkid 3 months ago
@pwkid Straight lines for miles put you in top gear and you drive just like if it was automatic. No difference there.
Yes, some countries make you take the test with manual, and why do you say that "it doesn't matter in the US"? American drivers don't need to be able to drive any car in emergency?
If you demanded for Americans to take their driving test with manual - there would be 5 tmes less drivers on the roads.
P.S. Can you even drift an automatic? That just can't be fun :-(
geek77rus 3 months ago
@geek77rus Lol....you're not getting the point are you. What, everyone is supposed to be an enthusiast? Some people like manuals (me) and some people don't (a lot of others). Why make it a god damn point that "Oh I drive a manual, you don't, therefore your inferior and your stupid and retarded because you don't know the joys of shifting gears"? To make yourself feel awesome?
Bottom line is: I enjoy shifting my own gears, some people don't. Who gives a shit.
pwkid 3 months ago
@pwkid If you don't give a shit, why post here? In Europe the price of manual vs automatic is pretty much the same, new or used. Very little difference. Only few old people buy automatic. There is no such definition as "enthusiast" on our streets - everybody drives a manual. I don't know a single person who drives an automatic. Automatic gearbox is definitely not on my shopping list.
geek77rus 3 months ago
@geek77rus Because I take offense when Euro snobs like you talk all this ignorant bullshit.
pwkid 3 months ago
@pwkid That's your problem. And anyway, American-made automatic trannies are absolute crap, I don't know why you even defend the whole theory. Aren's you supposed to be standing up for the whole "American automotive industry" and shit? The few good American cars all have manual transmission by the way.
geek77rus 3 months ago
@geek77rus @geek77rus Ok bro, go and sip your wine and have some more cheese. Dude, like I said, manufacturers respond to the market and the enthusiast market demands a manual option for enthusiast cars. If the European market wants to have a manual option for every car, that's fucking great. If Americans feel like an auto will do for daily driving, that's alright by me.
I guess in Europe your fart smells better as well.
pwkid 3 months ago
@pwkid Well, if you want to be mean... I'll have some wine with cheese, and you go get youself a fig greasy hamburger. That must be why our farts smell better :-) Dude, you asked for it!
And thank you for confirming my very first post - automatic IS good enough for Americans (and for old people).
geek77rus 3 months ago
@geek77rus LMAO I'll admit, that was pretty funny. Lol, look dude, all I'm saying it doesn't matter. Shit is different over here as it is over there.
pwkid 3 months ago
@pwkid Yeah, let's just keep it at that. I'd say we finally gained agreement on something. I hope your driver's culture will not completely exclude the Automatics, and that the Europeans become more open to this suggestion, too.
Peace.

i'm not a pro driver andi don't aspire to be, but for practicality's sake, i'd go with an automatic for driving in the city - if you're ever driven a manual in a stop and go traffic for more than 5 hours, you know what i mean. however, on long distance trips, say going into rural areas, i'd go for the manual because it's more engaging and actually helps keep my attention on the road

InfiniFC3S 3 months ago
Driving an automatic just doesn't make me feel like as connected to the road. I've never driven a duel clutch flappy paddle for comparison, but I'm sure i will keep the same mindset.
queershadow666 3 months ago
Maybe in US, but you always preferred automatic transmission because it requires less skill and effort. Manual transmissions are very popular elsewhere, plus they are cheaper - that matters in developing countries. In Europe people like manuals because they give you more driving fun - just as Alex said.

They both have their advantages and disadvantages.
kozen365 3 months ago
@kozen365 Like saying the internet makes people stupid? No, it is like saying the internet makes people lazy, and it does. It is immediately noticeable for motorcyclists. People who drive automatic cars tend to be more dangerous. They pay less attention to the road, to their surroundings, and most importantly (to me at least) motorcyclists. Talking on their phone, doing their makeup. Manual car drivers tend to give you extra space and extra attention. I think it is due to automotive enthusiasm.
Chace1126 3 months ago
@Chace1126 That is true. And im not saying that all people who drive automatics have been misjudged and are secretly good drivers... some of the genuinely suck... but its not all the fact that they dont shift gears. I have driven a manual and would like to become better at it because its the ideal driving experience, but for now i do drive an automatic and it doesnt make me any less aware of my surroundings... at least i dont think so lol. im an alert driver weather in an auto or manual.
kozen365 3 months ago
Americans are just lazy and that reason for the death of the manual in this country. You can make the "track day" argument but there the average track day guy is going to improve lap times way faster by hitting apexes and smooth driving rather then because his car can shift .2 secs faster then a manual. I love my manual and i will never buy an auto. Fuel econ could play a role but me I take driving pleasure over one or two mpgs any day. Cost manuals are usually cheaper not more.
outlawsonic 3 months ago
although this video is about cars, alex's statement about vinyl records sounding better than mp3's is NOT ENTIRELY TRUE. for music that was originally recorded for vinyls and then transferred to digital hes right, but music that is digitally produced today will not sound better on vinyl as compared to being played on a cd or through whatever medium one chooses.
korn14420 3 months ago
that bald guy is annoying. He's a smartass
julianramonable 3 months ago
This is very simple.
A. If a person sees the car as a need they want the driving to be easy and cheap as possible so they will prefer AT.
B. Someone who loves driving will want MT, because of what has been said.
Exception: Sequential/Padles are preferable in fast cars. People who buy them with the intention of being fast will choose this type.
Divinusable 3 months ago
My dad made me learn to drive in a 5 spd(I hope FLD readers know that means manual) car. He said "when you are in a manual car, you are driving. when you are in an automatic, you are mearly pointing the vehicle." When I got the car I wanted, it wasn't available in a manual transmission. I never felt like I was in control. Manuals do suck for traffic jams though. Feet get tired of pressing the clutch/changing from N to 1st/2nd.
Alex Roy is the devil.
12gaugebleachdrinker 3 months ago
"Double-clutch transmissions will always most certainly be faster than any manual out there..." I have only two words to say in response to this ridiculous statement: SEQUENTIAL GEARBOX. And yes, a sequential gearbox IS a manual transmission because it does require the use of a clutch pedal, and the MANUAL manipulation of a gear lever.
Also: BAN FLAPPY-PADDLES IN ROAD CARS!! They are a complete waste of time unless you're a Formula 1 driver.
NCBikerBoy 3 months ago
Alex, You are wrong.
