The first problem with this trick is that he's using 4 blank CDs and 4 discmans that in no shape or form have been "proven" to be what they're supposed to be. The second problem is that the trick is outdated - which he in a comedic way admits as he's setting up the trick... but that in itself is the error he made. Like Penn said, if they did the trick, they'd have a guy with an iPod playing the songs. We instantly know today that those discmans were rigged. The trick is 15++ years outdated.
I do not know how my grandpa produces coins out of my ear...but I figured this out before the 2nd CD was played. The theatrics were funny! but the illusion wouldn't fool anyone. The thing is, the CD players actually don't look real...they look like props. So even when they are played, you don't believe the sound is actually coming out of them....
@gnackattack As a magician myself, I will tell you, personality is 10x as important as the magic. A good magician can entertain a crowd with a shitty trick and he did. I'm not saying that he should have won, just that he doesn't deserve all this crap from YouTube trolls.
@WhoClashQueenStones yes but if everyone knows how the trick is done you can't really call it a magic trick, he's a great entertainer, sure, but a poor magician.
@gnackattack I don't want to get in a fight, I'll just tell you this, I know how 90% of Penn and Teller's tricks are done and they are still my favorite magicians.
But I disagree. Personality is NOT 10x as important. It is VERY important, very very important; nay VITAL to a show! But the trick is also VITAL!
Alan Hudson commits the cardinal sin of entertainment; he insulted his audience. He showed them a trick which did not fool my 12 year old little brother (we watched it together) and the whole audience felt insulted.
Poor quality tricks like this insult their intelligence.
@ThomasWadeFraser Hrm... I guess I'll just have to say that I disagree. I knew how it was done and I didn't fell insulted, I just felt entertained. Maybe I'm just not as cynical about magic as I am with films and literature because I very rarely am dissapointed by a magic routine. I'm just a sucker for this shit, I can't get mad about it. ;)
That was the first thing I assumed but I also assumed that they would let someone do a trick like this on the show that was so....bad. With some cash anyone could do this with no skill whatsoever.
The CDs are empty of course, nothing on them or player doesnt play - he has an accomplice playing them though somewhere off stage. Kind of cool. I could do this..
worst trick yet, whats even more embarrassing is how they revealed it. If only they could have written it down and asked him, dude walked out with egg on his face
@Megan4839065 You are obviously missing the entire point of the show. the objective is to fool professional magicians, if you fail, than you can not go to vegas.
Haha that was so bad - he didn't give anyone any reason to believe that the CDs and the players were actually genuine. Clearly just gimmick CD-players that always play the same thing regardless of which CD is in them.
@blearghp I sincerely don't mean to be rude, but did you watch the same video as I did? Ignorance is bliss, yes(!), but when the truth stares you in the face.. Really?! Think about it ;)
@GothPosen its funny cause u're asking me what video it is, well its called penn and teller: fool us S01E03 Part 3 of 4. do u know? the truth never stares u in the face.
@gnackattack No gimmicks required. Most of those clamshell cd players have no sensor for when the door is opened. The reason Penn talked about swapping the discs is because all of them are identical with the same 5 tracks in the same order. Each player is set to a different track in a specific order so he knows which player will play which song. Press stop, remove disc, and you're ready to go.
Lame trick: if he hacked the players at least I would have been impressed at his electronics skill.
@gnackattack But that's not how CD players work. They play the CD that's inside them. Did you forget that he also changed his shirt after he put Elvis masks on the entire audience? This is a brilliant trick.
