What if you had a square as the denominator? wouldn't it make it y = (x+3)/(x squared + 3) which would be [x squared = -3] which would be root negative three? So is the whole equation not applicable?

how do you do the problem if you have something like: (x^2-9)/(x+1).......or something with any of the x values raised to a power
