According to a police website, Joe Rizzo, then-mayor Frank Rizzo's brother, was the fire commissioner decades ago. The Philadelphia Fire Department was at that time the world's highest rated by the International Association of Firefighters. It had state-of-the-art trucks and everything else. Fighting fires and saving lives is not so politically important anymore, hence the city's indifference. Politicians today just want to get elected at any cost and have no concern for the greater good.
Philadelphia's true heros are its firefighters. They risk and sometimes give their lives to protect the unappreciative citizenry, sans the god complexes and self-entitlement attitude of police officers.
This is a very good video FF5130. Really wakes the public up, you're doing a great service to the PFD right here.
And as far as new trucks go, I say a mixed fleet of Seagrave Marauder ll and Pierce Contenders would be nice. Seagraves Rescues are priced ridicilously high, so that's where the Pierce Encore comes in. And as far as Ladders go, E-one builds a decent (not great, decent) Ladder for the money.
No they don't, not if they break down every day, this truck, gets stuck in the upright if it goes up at all, the fucking shit trucks made by a shit company, KME is like a Durex condom Compared to a Sea Grave which is a Trozan Condom, use a Durex you are going to break it and have a large bill for 18 years.
The city wanted to shut down this entire station however the department fought to keep it open. Engine 8 was closed however, now leaving Snorkel 2, medic ? and the B.C. in the station. The snorkel is OOS and has been for awhile. They were using a reserve tiller when I stopped by today.
I think they should get some of this stimulus money and place a large order for all-new trucks. Split the order 50/50 between Seagrave and Pierce for faster delivery. They're already buying new Rescue/Squad trucks like bubblegum!!
THIS is sad. Plus from what some of these guys tell me the trucks they are buying now are total junk. Squrt 43 has been running with a 1990 Seagrave pump for a while now and I'm told that truck is in better shape than the front-line ALF which is 10 years newer. The KME's are all falling apart too. They should do it right the first time and go back to buying Seagrave again like FDNY does. They are battleships and go much longer before they start to wear down. The Squrt shown here is an '85!!
KME's are shit I have always hated them, next they will be buying MENZ, even more of a shit Euro trsh truck, not there Booms on KME's are the shit, but you can't turn down any street without almost hitting shit.
They need a tiller at that station with all those tight intersections. Or at the very lest a COMPACT rear mount like the '81 Seagrave ladders they had.
They really need a 95'' Pierce Mid Mount and a 3 Seat Pierce Quint they don't need a four seat truck when your taking the ladder out with it. and they only neen the 3 Seater beacuse even if they do an MVA they only need two guys and the MEDIC Crew.
Oh yeah Believe it or not, that's Engine 8 the first bay truck, and the reason I said 95 foot mid mount is because in Old City, there nothing higher then that and Penz Landing is another in Company.
And usually they are the lowest bidder. But you get what you pay for. Philly should do what FDNY does; spec out certain things that are unique to a certain bidder so they get only Seagrave or Pierce.
I hate when them idiot politicians want to cut firefighters, Cops are never thrown into the lay-offs even though they have more bullshit detective jobs and less front line employees stay safe from your fellow brother Hammond Firefighter Local 556
This is the true side of the Philadelphia Fire Department, not all the nice New Trucks you see, there for show, this is the Shit they really have to use and the City never will fix these trucks or Buy Old City new ones, the Middle Bay Truck can't even fit down most Streets they Serve and are in very bad Need for a New Quint Engine, not a Ladder Truck.

there is always something about reding in an older engine though, the history the truck carries with it, carries into you ina way.
