My favorite solvent for cleaning the outside of my tanks is a very technical solution called dihydrogen oxide. It is especially good at cleaning salt residue from the side of an aquarium because salt dissolves in it readily. You can use a soft terry towel that is just damp with the solvent and not really wet with it. Then filth just wipes right off. What's great about dihydrogen oxide is it is cheap and plentiful. To get it, simply turn on your faucet and a little H2O will come out.
@acoomer79 Its probably in the garage because the home owner spends a lot of time in the garage.. My garage at my house is not for parking cars, its heated and cooled and is where I entertain friends. Pool table, big screen tv,ect!!!
hey t, it was 'indonesian' LR. I requested it through my wholesaler. personally, i have twice now bought indonesian LR and both times I was disappointed as there was very little obvious 'life' on the rock ( also see episode 89 ).
hey A, its not my job to question where, I just build them. maybe the wife does not want it in the house. did you notice the other animals in cages in the same area. maybe it is his Man Cave.
I'd like to think I'm not alone in my belief that it's both reckless and negligent; for Jim to suggest that "Ammonia" could be used near ANY aquaria; be it glass or otherwise. This is an especially ridiculous suggestion; given the level of inexperienced aquarists that frequently seek advice and learning on youtube. Far less toxic methods exist in which to clean ones aquaria display.
hey J, sounds to me like you have not even tried it as it is. I would leave the tank alone and see what results you end up with as trying to modify this tank is not going to be easy.
So the lids build up salt, and filter the light further...sigh
Chillers are needed when tanks are designed poorly, i am running 2X400 MH and 4 Pcs for actinics and no heat issues, my temperature does not change from day to night at all, a steady 82 degrees.
Metal Halides are HID (High Intensity Discharge) lamps, and not incandescent, incandescent/Quartz Halogen lamps produce light by means of a tungsten filament, Metal Halide generates light by passing and electric arc between two electrodes through a capsule filled with a mixture of halide salts and mercury (no filament). Thats why a ballast/transformer is required for metal halide and fluorescent lamps, both are gas-discharge. Im not trying to be a smart ass, lol, just thought ide put in my 2cents
Thanks for all the input! I am setting up a 90 gallon this christmas, and my friend recently got a 55 gallon, so I am just trying to get someone with a lot of experience's view on things. Thanks again!
Hey Jim i was wondering if those polycarbonate lids on top would restrict the amount of oxygen actually reaching the water, since doesn't oxygen go directly through the water surface?
hey W, i would think the 'joshling' of the water through the drain hose, open sump and protein skimmer would all contribute to an appropriate O2 level, and even with the lids there is good gas exchange but yes removing the lids would be better. keep in mind with an open tank top you expose the canopy hinges, screws holding in the lighting system, electrical wire connections to a much higher amount of salt spray which encourages corrosion, as well as, a higher evaporation rate.
@lafishguy When I was younger, my parents would also not let me have it in my home. I find that very insulting though. If only they could see now how it looks. What you think La Fish man :)?
@Arteolike Dude, your just angry that you don't have a man cave, or... don't have a wife that's a rife ruining bitch. Some guys stick with the worst girls man. I swear...
@Polybun I'm 15, not married =) I was just wondering, the tank looks awesome, and a garage? Ehg, I don't know. All i know is MY future man cave will be indoors, and hopefully a nice large tank and flat panel TV wont hurt.
WOW! About how much would a system like this cost? I have a 30 gallon hexagonal FOWLR. I got a good deal on it. But I am trying to set up coral tank in time. I am still trying to find out as much information on how to maintain a reef tank. I am lost.
hey 07, get yourself some current Reef Aquarium books, maybe a subscription to a Reef Magazine, look for a local aquarium club or society. as for the WY tank, my end was over $10,000
hey F, i would confirm it by testing for NH4 and NO2 but live rock type systems usually have a small short cycle of about one and a half weeks. dont push the load much at one time though.
im going to be setting up a 44 gallon cornor tank in afew weeks, in going to aquascape it but im also thinking about keeping discus and angel fish, i know there very sensitive so do you have any tips? i also currently have a 40 gallon brackish tank
Bummer! I also have another question. Have your had any cases or heard of any cases where a longhorn cowfish died or was stressed and released a toxin into the water?thanks Jim. Curious cause I just bought one lol
hey B, there is some truth to that but I have never experienced it and would not worry about it... especially since you asked the question AFTER buying one.
hey B, i doubt if I will be going back myself. the guys were out here two weeks ago looking at various coral sources and will mostlikely order them direct themselves.
hi Jim, i have one MARINE-GLO T-8 24" 20w Actinic blue marine bulb in my 29 gallon saltwater tank i thinks its 1800k. is this enough to have corals and Coraline algae grow or should i get some other bulbs, if so could you name me some
hey T, i dont do small SW tanks so I dont know the answer but I would suggest much more. i can tell you that Marine Glo is NOT an actinic bulb, its just a blue bulb.
@TMAXX95 T8 lightbulbs are not powerful enough to power a coral reef aquarium. For a 29 gallon saltwater, you want 4 bulb T5 fixture, LED retro, or 150W metal halide.
hey ND, they are coming out next month to the SWCFM, Vivid Aquarium, Wet Thumb Frags and SDC. I will try to restrain them a bit but it will be like kids-in-a-candy-store :)

Nice tank, you do great work, you should build a similar tank only freshwater with a rock reef and tropheus from lake Tanganyika with tons of algae they can munch on.

Very nice tank.Wondering if 10k vs 14k lighting would be more pleasing to the eye? Is there any advantage regards to corals with that difference in kelvin rating? Thanks
what glass thickness?

How high above the acrylic do the MH bulbs need to be? I heard that in some cases it can melt the acrylic

hey I, corals will color-up more under the higher kelvin bulbs, they will grow faster under lower K bulbs.
