  • what glass thickness?

  • hey Z, it was ACRYLIC and not glass, and if I recall it was 1/2 inch material.

  • Another great job my friend! Question, What kind of sand is that in the tank?

  • hey G, it was crushed coral sand.

  • My favorite solvent for cleaning the outside of my tanks is a very technical solution called dihydrogen oxide. It is especially good at cleaning salt residue from the side of an aquarium because salt dissolves in it readily. You can use a soft terry towel that is just damp with the solvent and not really wet with it. Then filth just wipes right off. What's great about dihydrogen oxide is it is cheap and plentiful. To get it, simply turn on your faucet and a little H2O will come out.

  • @acoomer79 Its probably in the garage because the home owner spends a lot of time in the garage.. My garage at my house is not for parking cars, its heated and cooled and is where I entertain friends. Pool table, big screen tv,ect!!!

  • What kind of live rock did he use

  • hey t, it was 'indonesian' LR. I requested it through my wholesaler. personally, i have twice now bought indonesian LR and both times I was disappointed as there was very little obvious 'life' on the rock ( also see episode 89 ).

  • You make the most informative videos on youtube for saltwater aquariums...Been watching for years!

  • hey I got an idea...why dont you make a new stand for the tank out of toothpicks?

  • hey M, I dont need stupid comments like yours....so goodbye!

  • love the tank and setup, but why the F is it in the garage?!

  • hey A, its not my job to question where, I just build them. maybe the wife does not want it in the house. did you notice the other animals in cages in the same area. maybe it is his Man Cave.

  • @lafishguy A submissive man cave : )

  • I'd like to think I'm not alone in my belief that it's both reckless and negligent; for Jim to suggest that "Ammonia" could be used near ANY aquaria; be it glass or otherwise. This is an especially ridiculous suggestion; given the level of inexperienced aquarists that frequently seek advice and learning on youtube. Far less toxic methods exist in which to clean ones aquaria display.

  • @KlassickVideo Sometimes it's good to encourage Darwin's ideas

  • jim, when will we get update on this tank

  • hey C, not unless I get invited back to WY.

  • @lafishguy okay,hope it's some time soon

  • hi nice tank and setup btw... was just wondering if it would benfit the tank by making the inside of the canopy reflective??? just an idea!

  • hey J, the customers carpenter built the canopy, and I think its inside was white.

  • hey J, sounds to me like you have not even tried it as it is. I would leave the tank alone and see what results you end up with as trying to modify this tank is not going to be easy.

  • So the lids build up salt, and filter the light further...sigh

Chillers are needed when tanks are designed poorly, i am running 2X400 MH and 4 Pcs for actinics and no heat issues, my temperature does not change from day to night at all, a steady 82 degrees.

  • needs more blue light

  • wwwhhhyyy are you talking like that

  • too much live rock touching sand = future nitrate problems bad aquascape u will collect a lot of uneaten food detritus

  • In the garage????!!?!?!?!?!??!?

  • Wait! What's the difference between this and episode 79?

  • hey O, one is setting up the tank the other is filling the tank.

  • Metal Halides are HID (High Intensity Discharge) lamps, and not incandescent, incandescent/Quartz Halogen lamps produce light by means of a tungsten filament, Metal Halide generates light by passing and electric arc between two electrodes through a capsule filled with a mixture of halide salts and mercury (no filament). Thats why a ballast/transformer is required for metal halide and fluorescent lamps, both are gas-discharge. Im not trying to be a smart ass, lol, just thought ide put in my 2cents

  • Thanks for all the input! I am setting up a 90 gallon this christmas, and my friend recently got a 55 gallon, so I am just trying to get someone with a lot of experience's view on things. Thanks again!

  • Hey Jim i was wondering if those polycarbonate lids on top would restrict the amount of oxygen actually reaching the water, since doesn't oxygen go directly through the water surface?

  • hey W, i would think the 'joshling' of the water through the drain hose, open sump and protein skimmer would all contribute to an appropriate O2 level, and even with the lids there is good gas exchange but yes removing the lids would be better. keep in mind with an open tank top you expose the canopy hinges, screws holding in the lighting system, electrical wire connections to a much higher amount of salt spray which encourages corrosion, as well as, a higher evaporation rate.

  • I am sorry, but i would NEVER Spend 10k on a tank and put it in the garage, thats nuts... This looks amazing, who would not want this in their home?

  • hey A, maybe the wife did not want it in the house? have you heard of a Man-Cave? maybe its practice before a bigger one goes in the house?

  • @lafishguy True, but i think if you got 10k for a tank you can rustle up some money to make a man cave inside the home... lol

  • @lafishguy When I was younger, my parents would also not let me have it in my home. I find that very insulting though. If only they could see now how it looks. What you think La Fish man :)?

  • @Arteolike Dude, your just angry that you don't have a man cave, or... don't have a wife that's a rife ruining bitch. Some guys stick with the worst girls man. I swear...

  • @Polybun I'm 15, not married =) I was just wondering, the tank looks awesome, and a garage? Ehg, I don't know. All i know is MY future man cave will be indoors, and hopefully a nice large tank and flat panel TV wont hurt.

  • hey lafish guy can you show youre personal tanks in a video? if you have can you point me out to the video. love youre stuff man!

  • hey Z, episodes 43, 45, 53 and 70

  • @lafishguy thankssss! :)

  • Good job on that stack of rocks, it looks awesome! I like the sharp protruding rock in the center.

  • WOW! About how much would a system like this cost? I have a 30 gallon hexagonal FOWLR. I got a good deal on it. But I am trying to set up coral tank in time. I am still trying to find out as much information on how to maintain a reef tank. I am lost.

  • hey 07, get yourself some current Reef Aquarium books, maybe a subscription to a Reef Magazine, look for a local aquarium club or society. as for the WY tank, my end was over $10,000

  • Hey LA fishguy,

I would love to volunteer, for your company. Is there any chance maybe i could do like a "ride along" some time?

I live in Playa del rey, have a truck, a great work ethic. and very easy going, and have a real love for reef aquariums. Please let me know.

    Cheers, Kevin

  • This has to be by far the dumbest location for an aquarium I have ever seen. - but nice tank though.

  • loving the cave. Great idea that was.

  • hey l.a fish guys, if i have added cultured live rock to my tank, (it has been in there for about a week), how muhc longer must it cycle?

  • hey F, i would confirm it by testing for NH4 and NO2 but live rock type systems usually have a small short cycle of about one and a half weeks. dont push the load much at one time though.

  • @lafishguy thanks a lot man

  • for fish only saltwater,i dont really need live sand?i know it would be good to have it,but im just wondering...

  • hey R, yes that is correct, live or dried will be fine.

  • im going to be setting up a 44 gallon cornor tank in afew weeks, in going to aquascape it but im also thinking about keeping discus and angel fish, i know there very sensitive so do you have any tips? i also currently have a 40 gallon brackish tank

  • hey E, i dont do FW, sorry.

  • @lafishguy ok thx anyway

  • hey jim are you cod in that shirt

  • Just Awesome

  • Bummer! I also have another question. Have your had any cases or heard of any cases where a longhorn cowfish died or was stressed and released a toxin into the water?thanks Jim. Curious cause I just bought one lol

  • hey B, there is some truth to that but I have never experienced it and would not worry about it... especially since you asked the question AFTER buying one.

  • hey jim when are you goin back to jackson hole and puting the corals in. im really excited about the next episode because im at that stage in my tank

  • hey B, i doubt if I will be going back myself. the guys were out here two weeks ago looking at various coral sources and will mostlikely order them direct themselves.

  • This channel is awesome

  • I'm jealouse!

  • hi Jim, i have one MARINE-GLO T-8 24" 20w Actinic blue marine bulb in my 29 gallon saltwater tank i thinks its 1800k. is this enough to have corals and Coraline algae grow or should i get some other bulbs, if so could you name me some

    thanks,

    Brandon

  • hey T, i dont do small SW tanks so I dont know the answer but I would suggest much more. i can tell you that Marine Glo is NOT an actinic bulb, its just a blue bulb.

  • winter time in Wyoming and you are waring shirt like that??? Man~~~~ you are L A fishguy arent you??? LOL

  • hey J, i always were tank tops, so i dont get my sleeves wet, and his garage has raiant heat through the floors.

  • @TMAXX95 T8 lightbulbs are not powerful enough to power a coral reef aquarium. For a 29 gallon saltwater, you want 4 bulb T5 fixture, LED retro, or 150W metal halide.

  • @adnack21...Yeah, I guess its all about how many fish you have in the tank.

  • Thanks Jim see if I can fined it my name is David

  • Hi Jim when you up loading 81 part 7

  • D, its already uploaded.

  • hey L, the entire home is radiant heat including the garage... and besides the tank top is the normal gear :)

  • the garage seems like an odd place to put a tank

  • @hugo2x yea WTF

  • loved the rock work but don't you think it will be nice to have more caves for fish to hide?

  • hey A, you dont think my 3-way cave is enough?

  • Cheers jim, Look forward to see

  • I jim have you done episode 81 part 7 yet can not fine it , keep up your great work Jim

  • hey D, i should be uploading it tonight.

  • If ammonia tends to make acrylic get frosty, why doesn't the ammonia in fish waste deteriorate the acrylic surfaces?

  • hey R, i am sure there is a chemical and strength difference.

  • This is definitely the best episode you have done! I love the reef tank videos

  • Jim

As always, just beautiful work, beautiful tank. Beautiful architecture, Beautiful Nature...

Are you going to place fish in oflr what are the next moves:-)

Just can't wait to see more and more of your amaizing work..

    Greatings from Jerusalem...

    N.D.

  • hey ND, they are coming out next month to the SWCFM, Vivid Aquarium, Wet Thumb Frags and SDC. I will try to restrain them a bit but it will be like kids-in-a-candy-store :)

  • Hey J, Now that is something to look forward to, and trust me they are not the only ones that are going to be like that as if it was me I'd be the same :-)

Great Work J, though come on, you have to do something outside the country hehehe I know you have heard this a million times before, but, hey, think of it, exclusive episode, in Jerusalem ;-)

  • hey ND, if you are paying the way...

  • LoL

Well, Hmmm.. I'm sure there can be a way to work it out :-) But seriously, It'll be Great if it does happen one day :-)

  • im speachless i can not beleave how beutiful this tank is and im hopping we get to see wot life is put into the reef tank gd work keep it up!

  • How high above the acrylic do the MH bulbs need to be? I heard that in some cases it can melt the acrylic

  • het T, 10 to 14 inches is suggested. the MH's heat can cause an acrylic top to flex and over time it may actually crack.

  • Very nice. I personally prefer a little less live rock in the display. I like to let the corals dominate the landscape. That should provide ample bio filtration, though. Has he put any thought into a stocking list yet?

  • hey J, they are coming out next month to the SWCFM, Vivid Aquarium, Wet Thumb Frags and SDC. stocking list... no, it will be like kids-in-a-candy-store :)

  • Damn wow nice. Now I can get to bed. I'm still up watching vids. Lol thanks Jim lovin it once again and my insomniac hours.

  • Great episode Jim as always. Look forward to more great videos. After all is said and done with the tank, crack open a cold one and sit back and enjoy your work. You have taught me alot. Thanks again.... Cheers... Dan

  • i love watching my MH turn on

    very nice work jim!

  • if that tank was mine ide put a ton of anthias in there

  • hey I, i like them but have had very little luck with Anthias

  • if it was mine it would not be hidden away in the garage

  • another great and informative ep. jim, i bet that tank is going to eat up a lot of electricity.

  • Nice tank, you do great work, you should build a similar tank only freshwater with a rock reef and tropheus from lake Tanganyika with tons of algae they can munch on.

  • I would put 1 giant red frogfish in there and call it a day. hehe I finally saw garden eels for sale in Houston Jim! I might pick one up!

  • Wow, this is one fantastic tank, keep up the good work!

  • id love to have a canopy like that

  • Guess I should have watched the vid first. Wow 2500 gallon tank in Bermuda, next the Shedd Aquarium is going to hire you for a 500,000 gallon tank lol

Is 2500 gallons your largest tank ever done?

  • hey E, yews the 2500 is the biggest so far.

  • Is this your biggest tank you've done?

  • hey E, i have done bigger tanks.

  • Hey Jim. I currently have a 130L Marine Aquarium and am thinking about upgrading to something a bit larger. what size tank would you recommend to be optimal when running costs are also a factor.

Also I'm from New Zealand and love watching the show, but it's a shame we don't have fast enough internet over here to stream in HD. Keep up the great work!!

  • hey J, i havent built systems based on cost, so I dont have an answer.

  • This by far is the best job you have done. Awesome Jim! You really did a great job. It was very entertaining.

  • Damn Jim, your videos are looking so good now. They are close to a professional production.

  • wow loving episode 81! keep up the good work. cant wait for the next part

  • So with 14k there is really no need for actinic : by that I mean the color spectrum would be bluish anyway?

  • hey I, corals will color-up more under the higher kelvin bulbs, they will grow faster under lower K bulbs.

  • hey I i would still run the actinics as they can also serve as the trasition between the MH and darkness.

  • Thanks for the input.

  • Very nice tank.Wondering if 10k vs 14k lighting would be more pleasing to the eye? Is there any advantage regards to corals with that difference in kelvin rating? Thanks

  • 14k is farther toward the blue end of the spectrum.

  • Nice Jim! Good Work!
