Absolutely the most charming thing I have ever seen on YouTube. This has what David Letterman once called "a great purity of intent". (To say nothing of talent, technique to burn!)
Rachel , you are a power of nature , you really feel how that we call The Music...as an Emerson lover and as keyboardist on the official E.L.P. Tribute Band i wanna say to you that you're the best Emerson interpreter that the world can hear...my best wishes to you , go on with this big passion and forget about all everything else . Luca Zabbini
@bernab Rachel is probably not like very many other people and it may be a mistake to try to judge her from your own experience. She does not read music, but plays it entirely by ear. When asked whether she listens to much Emerson, her reply was in the negative.I don't know how to interpret that.Did she mean that she had more recently stop listening to him so much? She's obviously a big fan of his and how could she possibly have learned all that by ear withhout listening to it many times?
Then great. She can play any kind of music she wants and she is in the league of Keith Emerson, Robert Fripp or John McLaughlin. For example, i can play music of Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, Mahavishnu Orchestra, some Bach, etc, etc, but it doesnt mean i can play everything. I cannot play yet Takemitsu guitar pieces, King Crimson´s Fracture, etc. What i know is musical language but cos i study it, that´s all.
@bernab Yes ,she may well be in their league in some ways. She also plays the flute almost equally as well as the keyboards.I hope she never gets tired of playing Emerson myself and I think that most people that have heard her feel the same way.She might want to play more classical or jazz instead. There are an unlimited number of people always doing that already, but I haven't heard anyone interpret Emerson as well as she does.We can only hope that she hears destiny's call, but only she can decide.
Yes,obviously she's been playing since age 2 or 3 and playing mostly classical obviously. That was very gracious of you to respond to the jealous bigmouth dermac.I hope you weren't fooled by his comment one bit.
Wow. Really, what is there to say? You play Emerson like nothing I have ever heard. I have heard this track a lot of times. You play it as well as he does. Unbelievable. Rachel, your hard work and dedication to your music is an inspiration to us mere mortals. Thank you. I would travel 5000 miles to sing with you for free. What an inspiration. What a talent. I am crying right now. Wow. Thank you again.
I've been viewing and listening to these videos over the past year with amazement and have refrained from commenting. This one exudes the energy and dynamics of a live performance. She plays the soul of the music, not the keys on the keyboard. After listening to this piece literally hundreds of times over the past 35 years, I'm mesmerized with her interpretation. What's next?
The more I watch this the more I am impressed with Rachel's genius. I mean I was there (with jaw dropped) when this was recorded but there are improv things going on that I didn't notice at the time. What a musical prodigy she is.
Hi y'all yup that's our Hammond in our living room and holy smokes it sounds friggin fantastic when a prodigy plays it. I try to keep it working OK and I can play a decent toccata or three, but Rachel takes the cake. Did I say that the organ sounds fantastic? Hammond organs really are vintage gems.
I have seen a video of a high school band playing Karn evil 9 - 15 persons or so. Elp played as a trio, Rachel performs it alone. Magnificent and very entertaining. See the show !
Rachel, i hope one day you will become a composer. It could be a dream come true and very attractive thing to see a person who can play and compose and mix influences from Keith Emerson to Tony Banks to Debussy or...even Messiaen....
It's really fun to watch and listen as you bang these ELP songs out! Anyone could learn a great deal about playing by watching you! I like the fingering you use!
Even my frog-like voice can't ruin perfection. If, or I should say when there's a next time at Gene and Debby's, Gene has to set up two minimoogs. Even though your voice is a perfect one oscillator minimoog :) How cool was that 1st Impression?? Bravo Jeanie and Rachel!!!!!!!!!
You are very impressive Rachel. It´s incredible, seriously...you have a great level of piano and organ and very advanced tonality harmony...emulating Keith Emerson is very complicated. What about the next step, trying to play Debussy, Messiaen and so on?
@bernab Please excuse me for interjecting randomly. Clearly, there is no simple explanation as to why Rachel is as great as she is. What you are hearing is a combination of extraordinary talent, intense focus and excellent support, education and guidance.
@bernab When are you going to stop playing your Debussy and Messiaen and move up to the next level and play some Karn Evil 9?Talk is cheap and you're not fooling me a bit. You're as jealous as I am.I'll be awaiting your organ debut of KE9 on youtube bigmouth.
@rematpac Of course i am jealous. In fact i am not a keyboard player, i am a guitarist. You misunderstood me. What i wanted to say is that Rachel is fantastic, it´s wonderful how she plays. A Debussy or a Messiaen piano piece could be for her a next step in her wonderful evolution as a keyboard-pianist-organist player. So, i am not criticizing at all her playing, i adore her!!!. So, i think to call me bigmouth is a free insult you can keep it out from here, right?.
@bernab When I1st saw this post,I thought it was Rachel herself answering a silly post of mine and I was so excited, but I saw it was merely you.But don't get me wrong,I really do appreciate your positive response after I instinctively attacked you. After a lifetime of experiencing a world full of petty jealousy,I know what she is in for and the odds that my attack was misplaced are pretty small ,but if there's even the smallest chance than I sincerely offer my apologies to you.But you're wrong.
@bernab She was already playing Bach fugues at age 4.No one could possibly play a piece like Karn Evil 9 without an extensive background of classical training. She may evolve into playing music beyond our comprehension and meant for a future generation. She has certainly already played pieces by both those 2 mentioned composers already and I failed to see you didn't comprehend this.Any feelings of jealousy,I only allow myself to have for the briefest time, because I only hope for the best for her.
my favorite song. you just blew my mind. ouch! too good.
