  • He sounds great and looks incredibly sexy.

  • *Swoon*

  • As a former singer myself I learned long ago that 90% of the audience just doesn't know the difference between what is good singing and bad singing. It's amazing, they just can't hear. As a singer I found this very frustrating which is one of the reasons I stopped. Today it is worse than ever... it's all flash. Who looks good, was it a nice production... etc. Art? Whats Art? Tradition? Who cares or knows anymore.

  • @reduxmisc Absolutely right. And the mic for the HD makes him sound huge. His voice isn't that large and i know he's mic'd at the Met. This sound is anything BUT natural. It's all swallowed. No squillo at all. If Kathleen Battle was mic'd at the met and even pavarotti then i know Kaufmann is as well. This is awful singing. I saw the Faust recently at the Met and in the trio at the end all you hear is Pape's voice in the theatre. In the broadcast, all i can hear is Kaufmann. So stupid.

  • Kaufman...you don't have even talk!

  • Man, I'm just amazed that he can even get through the murderous tessitura with the technique that he uses. He's a light baritonal tenor that uses compression in all registers ... His roots are those of a lyric tenor though ( I really can't imagine Ramon Vinay singing this!) and if I had to guess I would say that he had a baritone as a teacher at a crucial point in his development ... Very strange to hear him sing this ... but all in all a most excellent and interesting singer

  • Excellent!

  • wonderful. I don't like everything he does, but his technique, his dynamics and ability to shape the sound is wonderful. doesn't look much like an "Italian tenor" though, does he. The aria was written for Caruso, who would not have sung it this way, but at that stage of his life would certainly have had a dark, heavy voice.

  • He's fast becoming the Joes Cura of our times.

  • I love Jonas, but I don't like this performance...

  • look at his left thumb!

  • So many great tenors have sung this - most of them sing it with very sharp voices and for full volume, no beautiful nuances - listen to Kaufman, totally control of a beautiful voice with so many fine nuances. He is absolutely the best. God bless you Kaufmann.

  • He sounds so much like Lanza at the latter part of his, albeit short, life. No doubt influenced by Lanza's interpretations on so many arias. Lanza was always acussed, like Corelli, of "over athletic" performances for the simple fact that both, like Kaufmann, had extremely powerful instruments and had the option of doiing so...where most had to do the tradional interpretation of the "give and take" and not showcase their voice throughout. Check Lanza's interpretation of this aria.

  • Sounds like he should be singing Wolfram. Where did this guy come from anyway? Why do people like him?

  • @Chazzan805 He's currently the best tenor in the world. He's singing Tosca (Zurich on DVD), Don Carlo (ROH), Lohengrin, Siegmund (MET), Faust (MET), Don José (on video from ROH), Énée (ROH), Werther (Paris on DVD) and has sung in the last years Tamino, Alfredo Germont, etc.

  • @Chazzan805 Guess:))

  • @Chazzan805 We have heard him live and been blown away. I actually don't think this is his best effort. But I heard his met Siegmund and now I will defend him wherever I can. I was a doubter, and I am now a convert. It is a very germanic, unique sound and technique that he works to perfection in the roles that fit him. Don Jose, Werther, Siemund and I'm sure many more to come

  • @hightenor123 Yes, I got to see a clip of that Siegmund from the Metropolitan, and that was fantastic. That's where he belongs. But then again if he sticks to that he'll blow out his voice at an early age.

  • completely the wrong voice for it... no italianità sound to get the joke out of this deliberately ridiculous text and italian sweep!!

  • Composers probably love composing the talky bits after labouring over a good aria.

  • I'll take this any day over that ghastly last Pavarotti nightmare at the MET with Kleiber conducting. He was a musical disaster and for the following performances, he cancelled. Thank god for that!

  • Man, he's soooo gorgeous!

  • No, simply no.Why take on such assigments that show one not to best advantage.

This is a completely objective view, based on knowledge of score.

  • His "piano" is nearly inaudible and there's no vibrato. When he sings high he's flat, and starting an aria flat like he does here is unacceptable when this aria is literally the whole role. If you want real singing, you just need to type three words in the search bar: "di rigori Gedda". I understand people don't like "yelling" and want "warm tone" but Kaufmann is not singing the aria Strauss has written, those soft dynamics are not written and he is not in tune. Facts, not opinion.

  • Oh, stop with the effete criticism. This is exciting singing of hugely difficult music. He phrases beautifully, he's elegant, the voice is burnished, it's a privilege to hear artistry at his level. I did enjoy the comment about Vinay. How I adored that singer.

  • This is not even close to great: Richard Crooks or Gedda are much much better. He needs to sing his pianos with more clarity. He is over coloring and using too much dark timbre where clear timbre is needed. He is young...but it is wishful thinking to say this is great singing. It is not. That does not mean he is not capable of it but unless he learns how to sing like Gigli, Schipa, Crooks, Neate and Björling just to name a few he has some development in front of him.

  • Vai a lezione da Francesco Demuro, belcanto e bello stile italiano.

  • HIS SOUND IS SIMILAR TO RAMON VINAY'S BUT A LITTLE LIGHTER AND MORE TENORIL, VINAY'S WAS A LOT DARKER... I LIKE BOTH A LOT.

  • Why listeners always have to compare? can't people comment on the specific merits or lack thereof without going into tedious and often irrelevant comparisons?

  • @Mountmill that is a reasonable opinion. and I really "love" when people absolutely refuse to appreciate singers of this day and always point to the past....

  • @MadameBorgi WHAT ?! THEREIS NO SUCH THING IN HIS VOICE NO HAY NADA DE ENGOLADO GET SOME SINGING LESSONS OR A PAIR OF BETTER EARS.

  • I like his voice in this aria .

  • Comment removed

  • this aria is not for him...

  • @Nockturnmortem Oh, and YOU can do better?? Those who CAN'T, CRITICIZE.....

  • Actually, I pretty much like the fact that this aria is sung with a "dark" voice. It evades all the traps and pitfalls of yelling this aria instead of singing it. Beautifully done, magnificent voice, warm color. I like it.

  • @MyMusic0201 Bravo for your comment ! I have been hoping to find a recording with this warmer sound as opposed to the "shouting" renditions I have heard.

  • I love Kaufmann's voice but this aria is just too much for it and he strains to get the top notes. Listen to the ease with which Tito Beltran does this aria and the sheer beauty of his voice in comparison to this of Kaufmann.

  • Pretty===God Damn gorgesus!

  • james bond :)

  • Too much woofer not enough tweeter. The result is that he sings slightly under the pitch most of the time. This is not an easy aria. A brighter, Italianate voice would be more appropriate.

  • @swensone Richard Miller has (perhaps unfairly so) always characterized German singing as being overly 'covered' (Deckung) in the passaggio. It would be nice to hear the rest of his voice 'ringing' like his high notes.

  • bravo !!!!!

  • It doesn't sound Italian. Of course, he isn't Italian, but in writing the aria (cruelly, I might add), Strauss was specifically calling for an Italianate sound and not something more Germanic like this. Kaufmann has great potential, but not in this role. Tamino perhaps, some Weber, and at this point lighter Wagner would work.

  • fantastic!!!!! thanks Jonas for this timbre exotic an sensual!!!

i´ve seen him live and his voice sounds absolutely natural like this and powerful. He is a true intelligent musician who serves music trough his great instrument and soul.God bless him!!!!!!!!

It is also so easy to give an opinion about a singer for those who never expereinced what is it to sing like a pro!

  • @unethicaldenier I agree. I was surprised the first time I heard his speaking voice. Such a pity, isn't it? Because he does have elegance and intelligence. I guess his phonation is just the extreme opposite of that of his fellow German tenor, the great Wunderlich. I really can't appreciate a heavily covered voice.

  • More i hear and see this perfomanceof Kaufmann more ridiculous its seems.

  • this aria sound easy.. ^^ then try singing it.. ^^ i bet that you will spend most of your time banging the piano or cursing something due to the difficulty in singing this aria.. ^^ hahahahhha!!!! damn you Strauss! your so mean! haha!

  • Has Mr. Kaufmann a sore throat or simply he sings badly? Terrible performance.

  • @mark6230 He simply sings badly. Si è mangiato la voce (trans. "He has eaten his own voice").

He was a wonderful Heldentenor if he had had the intelligence to study and sing the repertoire!

  • I love this production... Especially him eating spaghetti.

  • @jcfs123 And him throwing down the napkin.

  • Jonas Kaufmann can really sing a huge variety of roles, from light tenor roles like this one, all the way to some heavier Wagnerian roles. I was really impressed with his Cavaradossi at the Met.

  • perfetttttttooooooooooooooo
