@EyeToyPlay21 Um, that is a 1003, not a 1000T, 1000T's don't have solenoids, which this one clearly does. A 1000T is a dual tone 1000, and a 1003 is a 1000T with solenoids.
I like the shrill, yet oddly harmonic overtones. And its rusty color gives it an authentic feel. This is the kind of siren that scares and alerts people instead of merely sounding annoying.
@hootergirlsrhot That might very well be true. I live two blocks from one, and although it no longer functions when it did everything had to be working on it. The chopper is what actually makes the sound, but the blower carries the sound a lot farther. Without the combination of the two it won't work.
My home town of Appleton, WI used that model of siren with that style sound when I was growing up in the 1960s and 1970s. They scared the bejeevers out of me when I was very young, but now I realize what a great and distinctive sound those sirens make. I don't know if there are any still in service in the city (I believe that our tornado sirens are in fact operated by the county).
Not exactly. At least, not to people. True, birds and objects could get stuck and damage the siren or themselves, but there's no real danger to passers-by.
is this a different Thunderbolt 1003 because i can remember another user recorded a Thunderbolt 1003 for the 2006 evening Tornado Drill that was also in New Hope MN
They were actually in entirely different cities, this was in the afternoon, the Allertor was in the evening. It was quite windy in the afternoon and I had to use additional windscreens which made this one sound much quieter.
@BenFranske I can hear a 2001 in the background, but only when the horn isn't facing the camera. I really like how the thunderbolt transfers sound where the horn is pointing. It does a really good job at that.
Sounds like the ones we have in Missouri lol
except where I live now in the country, we only have tv and our eyes to watch for tornadoes, still in Missouri though, but no sirens out in my area.

I wish that Federal Signal still made them.

It sounds so beautiful. I wish I had more vintage sirens around here instead of the brand new ones.
discofreakboot 2 years ago 2
This siren doesn't seem that loud at all when it is pointed in the other direction, but it sure does when it's pointed toward the camera.
Johnporter271 2 years ago
The Thunderbolts are very directional compared to today's sirens.

There is a broken screen inside of the siren...isn't that dangerous?

I think the trapped birds will spontaneously implode when the siren starts up.
it is a tbolt after all >:)
