wow! almost 3 yrs now since this, and now the new performance u posted. I simply can't get over how you play this. and watching you play makes the music sound that much better. so much energy and passion in this. The execution is pristine.
He does a glissando with three fingers...he plays it very well but he's only 13....maybe He isn't enough strong to do this with 3+2 (up) and 1 (down)....
The double glissandos? I use 2-4 going up and 1-3 coming down.
And on 1:03, I don't really know how to explain it, but for just a little constructive criticizm, I would reccomend making a greater difference in tone and color from the prevoius repeated notes. Like maybe holding down the pedal just a little more? Check out André Laplante's version on my channel. I think you'll like it a lot. =)
How do you the double glissandi? They hurt my fingers I can't make them sound smooth. Also, how do you do the part where you repeatedly tap Ab very quickly? Both of these things frustrate me.
Those repeated notes are what make this piece so difficult. I haven't actually studied this piece, I just tried a few parts when I saw the score. But with the double glissandi, I don't think there's any way around hurt and bleeding fingers for a little while. Just practice them until it hurts, let them heal, then do so again. Eventually they will toughen up and you'll be able to do them fine.
It's just like callusing fingers when you first play a guitar.
@ktm64 just keep practicing tapping not only Ab but most keys with different fingering patterns...lol play one note with a different finger each time and practice at different tempos over and over again.
@DJponkthispartay Thanks, but I think it's just my crappy Wurlitzer upright. I did it pretty easily on a Bechstein grand, which by the way was Debussy's piano of choice!
That's just SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOTIOUS, young man.
You are -- or soon will be -- on a level with Dinu Lipatti. And I don't say that lightly.
Don't EVER let the carping criticism of envious imbeciles, who cannot see the difference between diamonds and rhinestones, cause you to doubt yourself.
In this world, the better you are, the worse you're apt to be treated. What "they" say about Lang Lang is despicable, but it says so much more about THEM than it does LL.
Great job! Your beginning of this piece has more energy and spunk than Richter's! Just the right feel for that opening! ( I deleted my other comments because I had not realized that they would not be nested near the other comment I was responding to. I just wanted to share info about Pascal Roge....)
Hmm, this is a very difficult piece, and you have the virtuosity to play it with ease. I liked your "Une Barque sur L'Ocean" a lot, and I like this one too, but I think it could be slowed down a little bit. Check out André Laplante's recording of Miroirs, it's SUPERB.
Keep up the great playing! Ravel is my favorite composer!
From a list of comments one will gather this is going to be brilliant; I think it is so too, & decidedly animated. No reason to compare GL with people 2 or 3 times older, at least not just yet. Wait a bit. Camcorder mike is imperfect.
George, build a line in this piece, that prepares the culmination point. Rachmaninov one's said all his compositions contain a peak that one must not miss. I think this statement is valid for all great music. Here you have it shortly before the end. You are perfect technically, you play it faster than Richter, but you have given too much before the peak, so the secret here is restraint before you reach there, and then full energy when you are there. Also you could link the different sections...
I think it's a good performance with unique interpretation.
My favourite interpretation is by Pascal Roge, there is no video and i got it on CD, i dont know if you can find it but i highly suggest you listen to it, his Ravel is amazing!
I totally agree, George Li plays with taste and musical maturity, something which most "child prodigies" lack. There's a masterclass of Lang Lang giving George Li lessons. What a sham. George Li is FAR better as an artist than Lang Lang. George Li is an artist. Lang Lang is all kung fu chops at the piano.
i agree about lang lang :P his chinas best "CLOWN" xD george plays right now with virtuosity but his musical maturity (although much mature than other child prodigies) still need to be more developed...he should slow down a bit ... and well just make EVERY not count... everry note is put there for a reason...the pianist just needs to find the reason and express it in the appropriate way...george still needs to learn this ...getting there tho :)
Hmm. I don't know about that. I just uploaded André Laplante's 3rd and 4th movement, and they're both the best I've ever heard. Check them out please?
George Li is, indeed, great, OrangeKing. He doesn't have "potential" -- he's already there.
But that doesn't detract from Lipatti, and I'm sure not from La Plante, either. I'm eager to hear him.
Could you give a specific link?
BTW, did you ever listen to Rupert Egerton-Smith's Gaspard? It's my all around favorite, but it gets too little attention -- probably because I've been pushing it a lot over some of the Big Names.
Fantastic performance of this challenging piece from a remarkably talented young pianist. Not only does he have the technique, but he also has the right 'feel' for it - I hear and feel the Spanish flavour. I commend the teacher who's guiding this major talent, as George LI plays with good taste, good sound, and a riveting rhythm, all essential elements of an exciting performance. With proper guidance, I hope that he continues to develop and mature as an artist.
This is on my favourites and has been for some time. This is the 5th or 6th time I have come back to this page. You are now an acknowledged Piano Genius.
Glissando parts are too modernistic for my ears, but I am beginning to appreciate them. May your performances add to a better understanding of these classics by a broad audience. Thank you, George!
As always George lots to admire here, especially the rhythmic energy and drive. However, the interpretation overall could have more space, and greater warmth in the middle section. It's also reassuring to realise that you too are human and sometimes hit wrong notes! Congratulations all the same. (ps If you're after the ultimate performance of this piece, listen to Dinu Lipatti if you haven't already.)
@paulprocopolis Yes, I would tend to agree with your comments but, then again, it is still an amazing performance for one so young. Lipatti, Richter and Gilel's performances are all great interpretations of this hugely difficult piece and it says something that you should include Georrge in the same sentence as such legends. I am waiting to hear Geroge's interpretation when he reaches their level of 'musical' maturity. It's good that George still has something 'great' to aspire to.
I have come back to the Ravel today after listening to your Saint-Saens Concerto. This (I think) is your best work on YouTube so far. Do you intend to learn the rest of Miroirs? Anyway, I will write you an email with some ideas soon. Best wishes, Jonathan
Staggering! This is some pretty authentic Ravel playing. I thought you handled the Pochissimo Rubato just perfectly here. For live playing you've produced something wonderful here. Congratulations!
Excellent control and interpretation. You kept the repeated notes so clean and into tempo. I may have done a bit different pedaling, but I love your interpretation.

You can't criticise him for that, it's a perfectly legitimate way to do it, especially considering he's 13. Chenyin Li uses the same technique.

Your condescending tone to a young player of pronounced genius is frankly insufferable.
Only Lipatti performs this work any better. Most older players fall far short of THIS young man's vast accomplishments.
