You seem like such a down to earth guy, which is so unlike large company heads. I actually plan to use some of your ideas. I was blown away by the little things idea, such a great idea because of how simple it is. I was sitting there thinking how I'd not be able to stop myself going back for more if a little extra like that had been added to my delivery, so it'd be fantastic to do that for others, and I plan too. Really though, thanks for the series. I learnt a lot.
I really enjoyed the series, just got done watching all 8 parts. I've never really thought about owning my own business, but you have definitely given me food for thought, it's been my husband's dream for years to become an entrepreneur, I will definitely steer him to these videos. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and experiences.
The squid must have been a dried squid, which is popular in the East Asia. It is an acquired taste in the West, but it is actually tastes sweet and very popular in Asia.
@derekSivers Our deck building company offers a "lunch discount"... This little discount tied to food does the same thing as the pizza bit did for you, it made us more human. Good stuff!
Really inspiring Derek - thanks for recording. And for keeping it simple ... and real. Love your energy. (I worked in Jakarta for about 4 years (in the 90s) - HK and a bit too - so visited Singapore often (for visa renewals and to access western-size brands. I'm nearly 6 foot, so Indonesian clothes wouldn't fit ... the pre-internet-shopping era))!! :)
Great stuff Derek! I read your book last week and really enjoyed it along with your videos. As a result, I've been talking my girlfriend's ear off with your insights. Thanks for the motivation!
@dereksivers glad to know you love it here! other than the weather, i can't complain much. lol. Would surely love to get to meet you. Do you do talks regularly?
Great videos, I just can't comment without mention it.
Everything that you said is true and inspiring, but to do this things you really need to lose fear of failing, be it fear from being wrong or just from being laugh at.
I really learned from this videos, I hope you keep enjoying what you do, that's cheerful to see =).
I don't think of starting any business... But i love your videos. I saw one of your videos on TED (about not telling others about your futures plans, or you will probably ruin it) and i was happy to find your youtube channel these days. I like the way you talk, it inspires me. Hope to see new videos soon =)
This part is definitely the one that makes the biggest difference; the humanizing angle that can turn good businesses, or ones that seem identicle into another, that gives them the edge.
@Dixavd It reminds me of the finale of the UK Apprentice earlier this year: one of the contestants was a designer with his bigges claim to fame was he made a completely new, first of its kind, curved nail file. When he made it he knew to go well he needed to sell it at Wallmart and huge retail stores but saw the road there was almost impossible. So he found out who the person who admins the suggests was, flew accross the atlantic to her office and told the receptionist he had a package for her.
@Dixavd He had wrapped the package so delicately and most of all made sure that the receptionist called up to the womans office; he said it had to behand delivered in person. Once the receptionist called the woman down who saw how he had wrapped it and heard of how he flew that morning thousands of miles to give it to her, she gave him 30 minutes to tell her why she should bring it into the store. With those 30 minutes he got passed the entire dehumanized waiting list and got into wallmart.
You're awesome Derek...and it all makes perfect sense. I think one of my personal favorite services of CD Baby was the amazing email they send to customers, once their order had been shipped. It sure made me smile. :)
really good videos :) i watched them all i want to be musician as well.. its bad that cd baby changed .. it would be awesome if it was like it used to be..
Wow Derek you blow my mind every video thank you so much you opened my mind for my future im 17 and your helping me plan my life out. I just want you to know im thankful.
@dereksivers So Derek, what's your thoughts on school? Is it a vital stepping stone into the future for some, or is it a potential time eater for others, I want to hear your opinion.
@DragoonBoom Eh. Good for some, not for others. Learning is essential. But a real thirst for learning goes way beyond school. Now everyone has access to unlimited information & the driven ones can find great teachers, too. There are more direct/efficient ways to get the knowledge/experience you need.

Nice video series, thanks for sharing. I remember that “CD Baby Loves…”
Changes require pizza Ha! Seems fair enough! That squid deal was somehow meant to happen in the cosmic mechanics of it all…
