My hair is straight. I wouldn't say it's pin straight though because it looks really messy if i let if dry naturally, which is due to the layers i have in my hair. To make your hair scrunch I would suggest layers, having your shortest layer come at least to your chin. I would also use this technique with gel mousse or both to towel dried hair, don't do it when your hair is soaking wet or it won't work.

To fasten the process i suppose you could take a really strong holding gel and scrunch it into your damp hair (towel-dry first) and then allow it to air dry

It depends on your hair type and styling products you use. Mine stay in all day, and if they do fall it's not by much.
