  • Ooh rah

  • beats informercials by a landslide

  • Do you still have all of mediations?

  • I remember jumping up because i fell asleep and the national anthem woke me up.

  • Who was the man with the voice. I still remember in the 70's it was the same guy. When the anthem came on, that's when I knew I stayed up too late on a school night:)

  • Cool!!!

  • they should still do this. who needs to broadcast after midnight or whatever? everyone is sleeping, and this would make late nighters go to bed of boredom.

  • @scoobydoorocks10 No. Everyone isn't sleeping. If there wasn't advertising money in it for them, they wouldn't be broadcasting anything. Welcome to the capitalist world.

  • @scoobydoorocks10 as i mentioned before, some still do. they still do in some places. i know this much, because they still do it on one tv station that i watch. but they only sign off on the weekends. they usually sign off at 2:00 am

  • Now when programming ends, you get paid programming. No National Anthem anymore.

  • @tannerwaterbury That's because they replaced our country with corporate capatalism and selling penis pumps in the middle of the night along with 70 year old Chuck Norris exercise machine.

  • How do we get a movement to have them play our National Anthem again once a night... maybe right at 12:01am. I'd pay money.

  • Even that expensive sattelite package that you pay for...most channels only have infomercials for the sleep number bed, weight loss programs, real estate scams, etc...I sometimes am up at 3 am for an early AM shift at work, I flip on the TV....and this is what is usually on.

  • @aftershock71 i rather watch "snow" or the colorbars

  • @pennyf9 Why?

  • Back in the day (60's and early 70's), broadcasts did end after the National Anthem. The station would then show "snow" (no signal) until the station went back on the air. Most stations went off the air at midnight to 1 am and returned at about 5 am.

  • Always think of Poltergeist.

  • KNBC TV Channel 4 Sign On With Star Spanagled Banner From Poltegeist

  • KDLT TV, and KTTW TV in Sioux Falls, SD still sign off every night. KDLT just plays the usual sign off message with no national anthem, while KTTW plays both the message and anthem, along with color bars.

  • sometimes they accually showed things at midnight

    three stooges little rascalls

  • Oh The 1970's. After 3:00 AM all there was on T.V. was snow and test patterns!

(In retrospect the snow and test patterns were better then today's infomercials!)

  • Yeah, I agree with you on that.

Remember Channel 36's sign off with Bill Medley singing PEACE BROTHER PEACE and the cool animation video?

  • @WAIATA4U I remember that. I searched on here for that and couldn't find it. anyone have a copy?

  • @jaxhp

Unfortunately, no one has stepped up to bat with the Bill Medley animated music video.

If you remember that, then you probably remember those old PSA's (public service announcements) that usually aired late at night on KBHK or KTVU: The ones about STDs, teen pregnancies, domestic violence, drugs, alcohol, or "acceptances" (race & homosexuality).

  • @WAIATA4U I sure do. Grew up in the Bay Area

  • @iMoviePhil3a

Yeah, I hear on that! Pity, that's like the only time you get to watch music videos on MTV or VH-1.

  • @iMoviePhil3a No argument from me there

  • OMIGOSH! I remember Meditations before the sign off!

  • I've always thought the voice was Vern Wilson...Oh well, time for bed...See ya' in the morning for some cartoons.

  • Ah, the golden voice of KBHK announcer Darwin Gillette. I miss hearing it.

  • I agree with you......Grew up with his voice in the bay area. God bless Darwin Gillette

  • Darwin Gillette ??? A similar voice is used by FIELDS COMMUNICATIONS because I have seen a presentation tape for all the stations owned by FIELD COMMUNICATIONS

  • I miss his his voice too! And never knew his name until now! Thank you! :)

  • wow!,,,,,,talk about going back in time! thanks! quite possibly one of the best stations for tv and movies in california history,,,,,a rather short history but still

  • The local station in my area WHTM 27 in Harrisburg, PA also used this same SSB film back in the 80s for sign on and sign off

  • Wow! Such high quality! I remember the sign offs. Thanks for sharing..

  • I'm with bigkyle07 ,tv stations should start playing the National Anthem 12:00 am to sign off for the broadcast day.

  • I remember the Meditations segment.

  • they should still do this..

  • @bigkyle07 they still do in some places. i know this much, because they still do it on one tv station that i watch. but they only sign off on the weekends.

  • Based on the arrangement, it sounds like the Marines Band did the "SSB" which had the footage of the Iwo Jima statue. I have to say it's in better shape than what Cleveland's WUAB had.

  • In case anyone wants to know, the name of the piece that plays during the sign-off announcement is "Sundown" from Network Music (now part of Killer Tracks).

  • KBHK seemed to use a lot of Network Music pieces back then, especially those composed by Craig Palmer.

  • Looks like since at the time KBHK went from Field to UTV they got rid of the Sierra Club SSB film for the Iwo Jima film.
