@cupcaketopper - Better be careful. There are some delusional people on here who insist this is Ewan McGregor! LOL. But you are right, it is the incomparable Rufus Wainwright.
Such a beautiful song. And Rufus does it justice! His voice is like a fine wine. Rufus is even better in a live performance than on a CD. An amazing performer.
de Jean Renoir et Georges Van Paris-le Moulin Rouge original les années 40. French Cancan 1954. Originally written for the film French Cancan 1954 by Jean Renoir and Georges Van Parys. This version here is a remake/reprise. My favorite. I don't like the the English version, since the original was entirely in French.
"les escalier de La Butte sont dur aux miséreux, les ailes du Moulin protègent les amoureux.." (8). So beautiful, proud to be french just for ear this song <3
@HaydenB27UD Well, that's true for @PartTimeDreals, but, for @mrselow, actually, that's how young people talk in France. Yep, i'm French, and it's sad.
Oh, this is so lovely. Rufus' voice is sublime. I never tire of hearing him sing. He is so talented and his voice is like a good, smooth glass of sherry.
Such a lovely song. Rufus is simply wonderful. To those who have asked about his nationality, he is American - he was born in New York state, but spent most of his childhood in Quebec after his parents divorced. He now calls NY City home. His father is Loudon Wainwright III - American folk singer. Mother is Kate McGarrigle - a Canadian, recently deceased.
@slaughteredpixie503 naw, this is Rufus' voice. I promise you, I also do know thst itunes has it wrong and says it is ewan, it isn't :] And I'm not sure about this but isn't it not rufus creation but an old french song?
moncheri, je ne sais pas qu'est ce que je dois faire, j'ai aimé cette chanson depuis le moment que tu me l'a envoyé, maitenant je suis amoreuse de toi....josh et k.
@MathiasMeziane How sad ! His mother, Kate McGarrigle of The McGarrigle Sisters, had every reason to be proud of her son. At the same time he could be proud of his mother, who with her sister Anna made beautiful music in both French and English. I feel terrible about Kate dying.
@yourfatmuma1990 Rufus is American. Born in NY state. His father is American folk singer Loudon Wainwright III and his mother was Kate McGarrigle, a Canadian folk singer. Rufus is American, but may hold dual citizenship with Canada. Not sure about that.
Montmartre is the place to go when in Paris.. I`m totally in love with Paris! Listening to this song makes me feel like I`m trully on the escaliers de la Butte .. It`s amazing, I love it!
he made the most adorable marcel marceau. :-D i loved him as a jackass stoned out of his mind and reckless. and i love him so much more sober and vulnerable.
theres a mistake? i love moulin rouge but i didnt notice a mistake.. is it the du? is it suposed to be de? idk i'd like to know though its gonna bug me
La Complainte de la butte is a French song written by Jean Renoir, for the words, and Georges Van Parys, for music, film by Jean Renoir, French Cancan in 1955.
I lose my regrets I taste on your mouth the feverish breath of a half-starving waif And with your caress I sense drunkenness erasing my life The steps of Montmartre, all uphill, are hardest on the poor The sails of the mill, like wings, shelter all paramours And see how she skips, the moon how she drifts, The princess in tow Da da da da da da da da da da My reveries grow The steps of Montmartre, all uphill, are hardest on the poor The sails of the mill, like wings, shelter all paramours
Aw I just adore this song, and the movie is my all time favorite. Even though I've watched it enough to quote the entire thing it still makes me cry. And this song is just lovely-introduced me to the majesty that is Rufus Wainright! I'm unsure if I like the all French version more than the French with a bit of English one. Lovely both ways.
The best songs always have an accordion playing in the background.

The too pale moon poses a tiara on your red hair
the too brown moon spills glory on your tattered petticoat
the too pale moon carresses the whites of your uninterested eyes
Princess of the street
You are welcome in my broken heart

The wings of the mill protect the lovers
