  • The best songs always have an accordion playing in the background.

  • Is this song in the movie The Moulin Rouge ? 'Cause I don't remember it..

  • I don't care how many times I listen to this, it's still beautiful :)

  • why is it that on this one the chorus is french as well? the soundtrack from itunes has it in english...

  • @drawer304 ya you're right

  • Beautiful.

  • @cupcaketopper - Better be careful. There are some delusional people on here who insist this is Ewan McGregor! LOL. But you are right, it is the incomparable Rufus Wainwright.

  • Such a beautiful song. And Rufus does it justice! His voice is like a fine wine. Rufus is even better in a live performance than on a CD. An amazing performer.

  • I'm in love. <3

  • @erikarine2009 it's rufus wainwright.

  • <3

  • Love,Love,Love,Love x100000000

  • Juste magnifique

French Cancan 1954. Originally written for the film French Cancan 1954 by Jean Renoir and Georges Van Parys. This version here is a remake/reprise. My favorite. I don't like the the English version, since the original was entirely in French.

  • This entire French version is WAAAAYYYYY better than the one with the Engish refrain butchered into it!

  • ah le vrais Paris..... le Paris des amoureux :-)))))

  • France <3

  • One of the most beautifully sad songs give you the real feel of the Paris streets

  • lol butte

(8). So beautiful, proud to be french just for ear this song <3

  • wow didnt know this was Rufus..nice

  • I thought it was Ewan Mcgregor's voice!!!!

  • @mrselow @PartTimeDreams Your French sucks.

  • @HaydenB27UD Well, that's true for @PartTimeDreals, but, for @mrselow, actually, that's how young people talk in France. Yep, i'm French, and it's sad.

  • @Teresa7087 Sweetie, you don't have to have a battle of wits with an unarmed man. ;]

  • @AbbyandChelsee LOL. It's amazing to me how dense people can be.

  • Simply beautiful. The music and his voice blend together perfectly, like they are one in the same.

  • @mjaubjau Yes, this is Rufus singing this song. It is NOT Ewan McGregor as some have claimed.

  • @Teresa7087 They don't have the same voice at all!

  • @ggmonnes Exactly. Any fan of Rufus' knows this is him singing.

  • Oh, this is so lovely. Rufus' voice is sublime. I never tire of hearing him sing. He is so talented and his voice is like a good, smooth glass of sherry.

  • Such a lovely song. Rufus is simply wonderful. To those who have asked about his nationality, he is American - he was born in New York state, but spent most of his childhood in Quebec after his parents divorced. He now calls NY City home. His father is Loudon Wainwright III - American folk singer. Mother is Kate McGarrigle - a Canadian, recently deceased.

  • tres bien.

  • I love the beginning of this movie when it shows him showing up to Paris he's so cute :]

  • I´m going to France tomorow! I´m so exited! :)

  • @J0gunA France is beautiful ( Paris in the Night >.< so romantic *

  • @LilyMalfoyTeam Im going to spend in Paris 4 days :) then 2 days in Normandia :)

  • Yeah you're right hydeissosexy..! His voice is incredible, and I wish you can understand the lyrics, which are as andwsome as the way he sings...

  • It's originally Rufus Wainwright, but this particular track IS Ewan Mcgregor

  • @slaughteredpixie503 I think you're wrong. I've heard Rufus sing many times and this is definitely the incomparable Mr. Wainwright.

  • @slaughteredpixie503 naw, this is Rufus' voice. I promise you, I also do know thst itunes has it wrong and says it is ewan, it isn't :] And I'm not sure about this but isn't it not rufus creation but an old french song?

  • @Cabieeee Edith Paif is known for this song. Not sure if she came up with it, but she made it famous for awhile. (= Rufus sings it better. ~____^

  • @Amamoheli Actually Piaf didn't sing this song. The singer was Cora Vaucaire in the movie French Cancan in 1955.

  • trés belle chanson!!!

  • for the longest time I didn't know this was Rufus W.

  • magnifique !

  • i really love this, and i have no idea why, but it's so fantastic. i can only understand a bit of it though.

Very good but the first part is missing.

  • Working on a dance routine to this song.

  • @IsabeleBekett I'd love to see it ^^

  • I listened to this in French class once xD

  • My french teacher made us listen to this song a while ago,

    wow.

    it's amazing.

  • @NeverShoutDanni I know :P cause i'm in your class xDDDD

  • @FerociousJungleBeast oui oui. :B

  • i'm in love with ewan mcgregor

  • @Blueberry488 But this isn't Ewan singing. It's the incomparable Rufus Wainwright.

  • @Teresa7087 I DON'T FUCKING CARE I LOVE EWAN MCGREGOR GO HOME

  • @Blueberry488 Calm down, chill out, go watch a Ewan movie if it will help you. But when you're done, this still won't be Ewan singing this song. LOL

  • Yes, it's a great version of "La complainte..." but you're missing out on something classic if you don't go and listen to Mouloudji singing it

  • Moulin Rouge is my all-time favorite film, and Rufus Wainwright is one of my favorite musicians. What a great voice he has, huh?

  • Oh such a beautiful song, I remember my mother singing this to me when I was 5. *sigh* I want to go to France someday…

  • I'm american and I even knew that...Lol. This is sad. :(

  • C'est une très belle chanson ! (It's "Complainte de la butte" and not "Complainte du la butte" :p)

  • I <3 rufus!! ;]

  • This song is one of my favorite. I'm french and thanks to this kind of song, now I can say that we have good music :D

  • He is from Montreal Canada, his mother died today :(

  • @MathiasMeziane How sad ! His mother, Kate McGarrigle of The McGarrigle Sisters, had every reason to be proud of her son. At the same time he could be proud of his mother, who with her sister Anna made beautiful music in both French and English. I feel terrible about Kate dying.

  • but Rufus Wainwright isn't French?

  • @yourfatmuma1990 Rufus is American. Born in NY state. His father is American folk singer Loudon Wainwright III and his mother was Kate McGarrigle, a Canadian folk singer. Rufus is American, but may hold dual citizenship with Canada. Not sure about that.

  • @GiiRAFE Alizee? shes so pretty too...

  • Rufus Wainwright has a beautiful voice, it's almost like Billy Joel's.

  • canta ewan mcgregor ???????

  • no, es Rufus Wainwright que canta

  • its wright not write that is right! 4 give me im just a sad guy lol

  • Very beautiful song.

    Rufus Wainwrite sings well.

Manginfique. C'est une chason poetique.

  • The too pale moon poses a tiara on your red hair

the too brown moon spills glory on your tattered petticoat

the too pale moon carresses the whites of your uninterested eyes

    Princess of the street

You are welcome in my broken heart

The staircase up to the hillock is hard on the miserable

The wings of the mill protect the lovers

  • Actually it would be : "The too red moon spills glory on your tattered petticoat"

"rousse" means red hair, someone with red hair. Brown would be "brun" in french :)

  • will someone translate for me? :D

  • Rufus' voice just goes through my ears under my skin and stays there for a long time...

  • preciosa cancion y preciosa pelicula.

  • x10000000000

he made the most adorable marcel marceau. :-D i loved him as a jackass stoned out of his mind and reckless. and i love him so much more sober and vulnerable.

  • Alalaaa j'adore ♥

J'aime.

  • The moon, all too fair, in your russet-red hair sets a sparkling crown

The moon, all too red with glory, is spread on your poor, tattered gown

The moon, all too white, caresses the light in your world-weary eyes

Princess of the street, do allow me to greet you, my broken heart cries

The steps of Montmartre, all uphill, are hardest on the poor

The sails of the mill, like wings, shelter all paramours

  • lol im good. haha not really. i suck at french

  • theres a mistake? i love moulin rouge but i didnt notice a mistake.. is it the du? is it suposed to be de? idk i'd like to know though its gonna bug me

  • it's complainte dE la butte

  • I'd like to find this version. I have the Franglais verison (that says the stairways up to la butte...). I lost the French only verision....

  • This used to be my lullaby when I was young! I love this song.

  • What year was this romantic song written in? I am curious as to wheter it was actually a song during the time the movie was set in?

  • La Complainte de la butte is a French song written by Jean Renoir, for the words, and Georges Van Parys, for music, film by Jean Renoir, French Cancan in 1955.

  • Went to the Moulin Rouge for their Valentines dinner show last night and they sang this during dinner - blew me away...

The show and experience was amazinging; if you ever get the chance you should grab it.

That's so sweet. Even street whores have a home in Ewan's heart. lol

  • Don't get me wrong, but somehow I don't know how to assess your commy, if positiv or negativ.

Lol, no, it's okay. It's kinda funny. ^^

PS.: Cette chanson est trop belle! ^^

I feel, beggar-girl, your fetters, they curl as they seek out my wrists

I feel your young breasts, your thin little waist

  • are these really the english lyrics or just a translation?

if not, then do you know the lyrics in french?

  • They are only a translation of the Song. If you would like i can message you the lyrics in french.

  • Yes, please. I'd appreciate that. Thanks!

  • I lose my regrets I taste on your mouth the feverish breath of a half-starving waif And with your caress I sense drunkenness erasing my life The steps of Montmartre, all uphill, are hardest on the poor The sails of the mill, like wings, shelter all paramours And see how she skips, the moon how she drifts, The princess in tow Da da da da da da da da da da My reveries grow The steps of Montmartre, all uphill, are hardest on the poor The sails of the mill, like wings, shelter all paramours
  • Aw I just adore this song, and the movie is my all time favorite. Even though I've watched it enough to quote the entire thing it still makes me cry. And this song is just lovely-introduced me to the majesty that is Rufus Wainright! I'm unsure if I like the all French version more than the French with a bit of English one. Lovely both ways.

  • Amazing song and film (:

  • Yeaah ;) énorme =)

  • ohh! (L)
