  • Haha Knightley! "You've made her too tall"

  • Lol I can't imagine how they lived in those days with their bonnets and having to behave like a proper lady. It will kill me just to wear a bonnet and a gown all the time when I'm outdoors.

  • The painting is so pretty.

  • The 2009 version is nice; I like how it more thoroughly explores many details in the book. However, I think this one is the best film adaptation of all. The pacing and direction are much smoother, and the screenplay is so crisp and clever bringing out wonderful performances from the whole cast. The climactic moments are also more swoony and satisfying in this one. :)

  • Knightley is staring Emma down at 00:09- 00:10

    .

  • Knightley is staring Emma down at 00:12- 00:13.

  • Mr. Martin is adorable.

  • "Incredible... You have expressed her completely!" LOL that part made me crack up

  • Mr. Martin is SO cute. Just sayin. Harriet really picked out a good one right off the bat.

Although I must say, Emma would have had quite a predicament had I been living in that time. I would call dibs on Mr. Knightley.

  • Anyone else think it's hilarious that Harriet said, "It is my belief that one loves only once" when the narrator at the end said "But it was more to hope that even Harriet Smith could be in love with more than three men in one year"?

  • @micalikespie So true!!! great observation!!!!

  • @Supablonde1 Thanks!

  • Wonderful movie!

  • This version in comparison with the 2009 version is nothing, but if I hadn't seen the new version, this one is very cute and sweet, and mr. Knightley is nice to look at!

  • This is lovely, so many good natured women. And gents of course.

  • "But it sounds as tho he eats a worrisome amount of custard!"

  • Bwahahahaha, you can't help but get caught up in all the propreity of this movie.

  • LOL Emma is such a meddler but she's such an adorable girl *hugs* she thinks she doing it for the best

  • at least at 7:51 there's no portrait :P

  • where is the portrait? :D

  • Emma's painting was lovely, but I must say that Miss Smith posed in the most ridiculous way possible. :D

  • it's everywhere darling :)

  • I wish to read the book but I can't seem to be able to find it anywhere. :(

  • @TheMswhitlock why? is there no library? or go to amazon.com

  • @TheMswhitlock It's easily found online.

  • after reading the book, i could say that harriet, elton and even emma is so much different than I imagined, a bit disappinting...but Mr. Knightley, oww, is almost so perfect as i was expecting!

  • To Bunny2132:

Thats because the film "clueless" is based on Jane Austens "Emma" :D

  • This story reminds me of the film 'clueless'

  • i just finished studying this novel for school; and although this is a pretty good adaptation, make sure that you read the actually book if you like the movie:)

  • harriet is a ditzz

  • Toni Collette was perfect for the role of Harriet XD

  • I must say that the 2009 version was so much better than this one. It was quite a pain listening to Gwyneth Paltrow faking a British accent and Toni Collette faking a squeaky voice.

  • boring

  • Even just 20 minutes in, I like this version a LOT better than the one with Kate Beckinsale.

  • how could they live with only the light of candles? Why didnt they use chandeliers to multiply the light with the reflection of crystals?

  • @1972jewish 'cos they're only middle-class, not rich enough. In fact, wax candles were something of a luxury, the lower classes had to make do with animal fat.

  • God I'm sorry. I think Alan Cumming as Mr. Elton is so attractive.

  • How genteel Mr. Knightley is!

  • I think that gywneth plays the character very well it's just like the book

  • when i saw her i thought: this is E.Woodhouse

  • ..It sounds as though he eats a worrysome amount of Custard...

  • GP's Emma looks so 90s. Maybe it is the hair and makeup, but you can totally tell that this was done in the 90s.

  • @diamantina101 It's also the clarity in the camera they used. That's where the real difference lies. You can see it even in the 80s too - put a movie frame from the 80s, the 90s, and a current movie and the difference is really interesting.

  • @diamantina101 I don't agree. The hair is the style of the Georgian era, when the story is set. As to the make-up, well I guess its been done as natural as possible, as of course women in those days wouldn't have worn any unless they wanted to look like a hussy.

  • emmas so sneaky here hehehe

  • the diference between Edward Cullen and Mr. Knightley is as follow: EC is a murderer and MK is NOT

  • I see people comparing Edward Cullen to Mr Knightley WTF.

  • @EverlastingxHope i agree with you WTF!!!! twilight is twilight and emma is emma no comparation!!!

  • Hey, I just realized that the Emma here, also played Pepper in Iron Man 2. That is one big change!!

  • How on Earth did they get the apples to grow UP? ;-)

  • @policemanaaron That's exactly what I was wondering my father said it might be peach but to make it look like an arch??

  • Considering Gwyneth Paltrow is American and toni Colette is Australian, they both do commendable English accents... As Knighley might have said "...Well done, well done indeed..." I enjoyed this version very much :0)x

  • lol id put my umbrella up too

  • are those apples??wow..

  • I agree. This version, though closer to the book, is definitely not as good as the BBC version of Emma. That miniseries was a delight to watch. The casting if this one, except a few characters, us all wrong.

  • So far this movie is boring compared to the BBC version. I hope I won't be bored throughout.

  • What a great disappointment., I would recommend the BBC Emma to anyone who has seen this clip. That mini-series was wonderful. This movie just makes me want it to end.

  • the guy that couldn't wait to see the painting looks like peewee herman

  • mr eltons sort of cute ; ) :P

  • @stoneoffarel yes yes he is ....

  • actually zebari14ariyan..I have watched all version'sof this book (into movies) like the the hair and dresses as I said best in this one. thanks

  • ma'tto

    ma'ningain

    die gee:D

    beleaving its

    u

  • finally a film with the hair and dresses pleasing and colorful, very nice..

  • Comment removed

  • I love Jane Austen, Her novels are brilliantly written and still quite applicable today even. I'm so far in love with P&P, though I'll have to read Emma now.

  • i dont like their hairstyles xD bt movie is great ^_^

  • I guess it's always disappointing to see the movie version of a well-loved book. I can't stand to watch this anymore, but I have to say Interview With a Vampire, "It' and other were well done. Too bad the same can't be said for all "adaptations." Sigh.

  • LIZZY for the win with all of austen girls.

  • @shams025 I agree with you

  • I love that part as well when Mr. Knightley is sitting with Miss Bates and her mother and showing interest where clearly interest was lacking. Ahh, the men in these movies...the parties, the friendships and conversations.

  • Oh Emma.

  • I love how Mr. Knightley is sitting with miss bates and her mother it shows you how much of a gentleman he is i think it is so sweet of him

  • @goodytwoshoesdancer

Edward Cullen and Mr Knightley are very similar. Indeed, Stephanie Meyer has declared that, to a large extent, Edward Cullen is based on Mr Knightley.

  • @policemanaaron Edward cullen was also based of Gilbert Bylthe from anne of green gables!!!

  • @goodytwoshoesdancer I agree. I loved the clothes men wore then too. If only there were still gentlemen and ladies nowadays. I loved all the good manners and etiquette, though I know it was also rather stifiling.

  • @TheGlassbooks I agree with you 100% back then everything was refined and beautiful and it was such a more peaceful time but my favorite era was the Victorian age, my mother did always say I was born in the wrong century!

  • @goodytwoshoesdancer

but you also have to think about sanitation and stuff, like what about not being able to take a shower like everyday or every other day. and what about getting your period and not knowing a lot about medicine back then.

  • is there something wrong with paltrow's voice in this?

  • @colourmeplum she's american and she's doing a british accent.

  • I just hate how Emme made her friend think that the young man is not suitable for her.

  • Could you please not ruin the book/movie for others. I'm sure there's plenty of people watching this who don't know how it ends.

  • @GreenRoheline I know what was the point in that we all know what happens in the end which makes her effort pointless.

  • Toni Collette is so charming in this movie..^_^

  • i like the part where she tries to catch the butterfly so freakin funny

  • haha and now as i read all the comments already posted, im not the only one that saw that haha....just ignore me :)

  • im really throwing this out there, but this part of the movie really reminds me of the movie clueless....anyone else see it? haha

  • lol it is not my place to intrude in personal matters.

  • OMG I know it was based on Emma I was making a statement!!!!!

  • It's the English version of Clueless, no disrespect to Jane Austin I am sure.

Love this movie, especiall y the period clothing. Thank you for the upload.

  • Clueless was based on Emma. : )

  • uh that's because clueless was based on Emma...

  • I know that I was making a statement.

  • No, no. Clueless is the Americanized, modern story based on Emma. Don't go confusing people, you!

  • Eh, Clueless intentionally ripped off Emma; you knew that, right?

  • that's because clueless was based on emma

  • such a lovely face Gwyneth has ...

    adore her very mucha!

  • I think G. Paltrow a wrong cast.

Her american accent shines through (see 7:48) and her british accent is not convincing.

  • I think her acting is EXCELLENT and she does an excellent job as Emma. I am a Jane Austen fan and it's hard to please me with a movie version of one of her books ... but this movie did ....

  • That astonishes me. But I am not American.

I think the film has something of a typical american comedy. In this respect it seems to me rather a parody on Jane Austen films.

I feel it is ages away from the BBC P&P from 1995.

  • Silkerbud, I am an American so I cannot appreciate the subtlties of a proper British accent.

I can sympathize though, I am a southerner and often cringe at the horrible, 'over the top' southern accents I so often hear coming out of Hollywood which are altogether wrong. I am 42 and have learned to 'hear' past it if it is a good production in other respects.

I love this movie! Thanks sara230 for posting.

  • i dont like the way they portray ms. bates in the books she was more agreeable a person.

  • This Harriet looks older than Emma, even older than Mrs Weston! She's 17 in the book! OMG!

  • I think they showed her this way on purpose, to make Emma's attempts at making her marry a gentleman look ever more inadequate. It is more subtly done in the novel, of course. But you can't squeeze all Miss Austen subtleties into two hours of screen time.

  • Toni Collete is such a good actress, but she doesn't exactly fit my idea of Harriet... *shrugs*

  • I know what you mean...

  • Emma is the weakest female lead character I have ever seen from a Jane Austen novel. Usually her characters are a bit more vibrant, though there are a few exceptions. =/

  • Yes, i've never thought of Fanny Price and Anne Elliot as vibrant characters... ^!~

  • IMHO Fanny Price was a horrid prig, quite the worst of JAs heroines...I hated Mansfield Park, but adore the rest of AUsten...have you read The Jane Austen Book Club? Great book...

  • seen the movie version, is it even close to the book version?

  • Really? I like Fanny Price, not my favorite characters - because Northanger Abbey is my favortite book, so of course Catherine is my favorite heroine, and right after her come Emma and Elizabeth, but I still prefer Fanny to Anne Elliot

  • @calimerette62 Yay, at last someone who rates Northanger Abbey as their favourtie Jane Austen book. I thought I was the only one!

  • does Elton like Emma?

  • YYYYYYYYYYYYYES

  • Thank you.

  • This is a Masterpiece Classic, by an author Jane Austen, who has wrote many great novels I would encourage you to read her works and maybe you'll have an understanding of women. :D

  • Indeed :D btw, whenever you had an understanding of me, i'll try to understand you :-P

  • HAHA!!.....dynamics of men and women ..quite interesting...

  • Ok first of all.. yall need to calm down its just a movie no need 2 hate any1. Most of Jane Austens book the main character is messed up in some way at the start.. and then she learns the grows from it.. (Like Pride and prejudice..)

  • Clueless is based on this book..

  • Emma is obnoxious! She's so vain at times it is hard to remember she's the heroine of the book!

  • she was supposed to be that way, u know?

jane austen even said that she's the only one who will love emma's character

  • she is starting to annoy me already! that emma girl. she needs to stop

  • screw edward cullen. mr. knightley is the perfect man.

  • I SO agree! Glad to see that everyone isn't obsessed with that serious/guy.

  • AMEN

  • i dont really like gwyneth as emma,

i imagined emma more of a brown hair, hazel eyes girl. but harriet looks exactly as i imagined.

  • Then you have to watch emma with kate beckinsale, not as close to the book as this one, but the characters are, in contrary to this one

  • i feel much better about her watching the whole movie though

    she really pulled it off.

i wonder if she would of looked better with brown hair though

  • the kate version is way more accurate to the book and characters! jeez have you READ the book!

i always imagined her brown hair to btw. but in the book they talk about harriet being beautiful and young, not old and ugly

  • In a way this version is true to the spirit of the book, without pretending to be accurate to details.

  • you realise that made absolutely no sense, don't you?

  • Alright, now that I have watched it till the end, I can be more specific.

One could say, this is a romantic comedy =based= on the novel. It doesn't attempt to reproduce on screen all the complexities of the text. On the contrary, the director tries to catch only the lighthearted part of the book to make this an appealing and dynamic film. He sharpens some edges, so that not to exceed the 2 hour length. But, in my opinion, he manages to do this humbly and respectfully.

  • was clueless based on this book? I'm already noticing a LOT of similarities.

  • It was. Just read Wikipedia^^

  • I dislike Emma, why should she influence other people in order to get what she planned, and not for the people in question..grrr

  • ohhh okay I get it now, thank you =)

  • wait I'm confused...in the novel they also say that Mr. Weston's wife died...and now he married Miss Taylor...and if Frank Churchill is Mr. Weston's son..then who is Mrs. Churchill who gets ill in the novel..=S?

  • it's frank's aunt because frank takes his uncles last name, churchhill.

  • ...Emma is a snob... but a good one ;)

  • She was cast well. She's so funny.

  • Emma dear, Harriet likes Martin! Let her be!

  • why is it that spouces never sit together at meals?

  • I don't know. maybe society thinks they may be too interested in each other and not the meal.

  • Gwyneth Paltrow plays so well ! She's very faithful to the book, and to Emma's psychology. Bravo !

  • haha Emma is just as bad as Mr. Darcy!

"Oh it is not my place to meddle in the lives of others"

    :P

  • though nt as good as the book but surely entertaining

  • the casting for Harriet is bad

  • harriet smith has in the book blnd hair and blue eyes! and its supose that its so beatifull!! but emma is perfect

  • i can see the connections between this and clueless now, lovin period dramas but never saw emma before, shes just as cunning as cher its great lol

  • i love the garden part, and when the camera goes down, it's as if it's in paradise or something, beautiful!

  • gwyneth paltrow really pulls it off as emma

  • Yes i know i love this movie and book. I have the soundtrack and love the classical music on it.

  • hahaha...nerd....lol

  • clueless is actually based on the same book, so there you have it.

  • omg, you're right, now i just feel stupid for never making that connection before. thanks!

  • this is just like the clueless movie! or rather clueless is just like this!

  • Is it just me or does it sound like Hariet says Ms.Outhouse instead of Woodhouse when she spots Mr. Martin?

  • hahahaha.... i think she does!!!!

  • I think so too! hahahahahaha!

  • aw! emma is so sneaky, wouldn't she love to be cupid? lol

  • ...Emma is a snob... but a good one ;)

  • I can't decide which I like better the older one of this. This one makes Emma look a lot more like a snob.

  • YOU blow dogs for quarters, man

    This movie rocks!

  • that's kind of mean.... this is one of my favourite movies (I think it rocks too) - pointing out a blooper is nothing to take offense to.

  • the movie light is so dark, I don't like it very much. Besides that, I luv it :)

  • your right it is quite dark i think they are trying to make it more real with candles and only sunlight it was probabley quite dark plus the fashion was dark coloured walls so that made it worse your right i dont like it but the book is very good

  • I've been inspired to watch this film after reading Gertrude Himmelfarb's chapter on Jane Austen in The Moral Imagination. It's very entertaining!
