I'm sorry I find it hard to ignore of their relationship with one another. I can't help but think the thrashing and protesting on Scarlett's part was stubborness, at least in this clip. I would only agree with you, if the clip ended with Scarlett making her escape from the estate that morning with her daughter perhaps. It's just not rape overall. And also I can't help but bring the author's intent of who the both of them are as a couple, but whatever. Interpret however you like. So no more. >_>
I disagree that it was rape, it is implied in the following scene of Scarlett being particularly pretty happy the next morning and sharing it with Mammy how lovely she was feeling.
You make the mistake of thinking in our current day frame of gender construction. In that time, the female role was widely accepted as submissive, and much like children, not knowing what's best for them. The men in women's lives made the decisions for them: their fathers in upbringing and education, their husbands in sexual and family life. It was assumed that men knew best, and no one challenged it-- not even the women, who had internalized the imposed roles as natural.
@colinmochriesbuddy So are you saying Scarlett was raped? Wasn't detailed in the book that she eventually embraced and kissed this man after he whisked her up the stairs? Like one of the top comments stated, I agreed that it was basically some thrilling hate sex. IDK, ScarlettxRhett seemed almost like an exception to past overall views of women during that time period based on what was shown of their interaction between one another in the film.
If this was shown in the film, that would make a difference. But it wasn't, and we're talking about this scene from the movie, or we wouldn't be posting here. What happened in the book is irrelevant. The movie shows an angry drunk man forcibly carrying an unwilling woman, thrashing and protesting, to have sex with her whether she wanted to or not, hence the concern.
Think to yourself: even in the book, would Rhett have stopped if Scarlett continued to protest?
When I first saw this, I was so scared cause I hate seeing woman getting beaten or raped. Then when it went balack and Scarlett's singing, I figured the went upstairs and he rubbed her feet or something!
This is NOT rape. How can it be? She is so happy in the morning - and in the book she starts kissing him back. At the very most it is sexual assault (ie he forces her to kiss him - but he did this before when he left her on the road to Tara) - but it is not rape!
@shoptilludrop1 but I read that she was a nymphomaniac. I heard that Clark was just "being overheated" although I don't know what that means. But maybe vivien Leigh was also provoking him. Who knows? I just know that Vivien Leigh was notorious for being a nymphomaniac.
@Ilovemusicanddance10 Yeh, i read that as well, but i think that came later in her life- during her marriage to Laurence Olivier. Also, if she was a nymphomaniac at that time, why would she say no? And to Clark Gable of all people...
Is it me or does anyone else think this is a pretty racy scene for a 1939 movie? They had so much more trouble using the word "damn" but I think this is just as much controversial for the times. Such a sexy scene and so obviously not rape...
My my, Scarlett looks like she has had a satisfying sleep. :P thanks for sharing Jimmy, have fun duplicating this scene with Pookie, good luck! :) Love Mellissa :) *****
i love this scence its so romatic in a strange way cause you can see how much it hurts rhett that scarlett loves another man. Rhett just wants scarlett to want him and love him.
@bisquit9230 I think deep down she loves him though. Without knowing it or admitting it because she thinks he's not a proper man to love (and he does his best to be the most irritating fellow). That's the impression I got from reading the book anyway :)
@khokhar1969 well in the official sequel she does. apparently, many critics didn't like it which is weird cos the critical praise for it was included in the book's pages. and i loved it. it's called Scarlett: The Sequel to Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind by Alexandra Ripley.
@PeaceLovePink.......it wasnt rape and it wasnt hate sex either. rhett was crazily in love with scarlett and she loved him too but was too arrogant to admit it. when he jumps on her that night she loves every minute . next day she is happy that he has confessed his love but so ashamed of her own reactions to him....he on the other hand is angry that he gave himself away and continues to treat her shabbily
I'm not sure if it was arrogance on her part. Perhaps, it was fear of giving in and giving away her feelings, hence making herself vulnerable. And, as you've already pointed out, that's what we see on Rhett's part as well.
@PeaceLovePink223 its not rape...if u read the book its obviously more descriptive, and also its a little more different in the book . in the book he grabs her and the top of her dress comes loose revealing her shoulders, and then he carrys her part way up the stairs kisses her and then she kisses him back and puts her arm around him...so clearly he didnt rape her
What if a woman finds a particular man attractive but hates his guts, is in another relationship, or has some other psychological reason for not wanting to sleep with him?
The guy's abilities in bed are irrelevant.
I've never seen the full movie, so I don't have much context, but that particular misconception needs to be cleared up.
this is the only part i wish they made more like the book because it's longer and theres more passion in the book, like for example in the book he grabs her and the top of her dress comes loose revealing her shoulders, and then he carrys her part way up the stairs kisses her and then she kisses him back...THEN he takes her all the way up...not that im complaining i still love this part
@regulators88 He said he didn't want to do it because he feared not living up to everyones expectations. It is understandable since everyone in America at the time wanted him to portray Rhett.
@sanjac07 True. I watched the making of GWTW and someone said that about him. Whenever we do a play at schhol, I always feel that I did a horrible job, but in the end; they always love it!
I wish that I could've been Vivien Leigh in that scene. To go upstairs and have Rhett (Clark Gable really) "rape" me! He knew how to satisfy Scarlett.
I wish that Margaret Mitchell would have written a sequel to Gone With The Wind. So we would know what happened to Scarlett, Rhett, Pitty-Patt, Ashley, Mammy, Suellen and Careen, and all the others. and to see if Rhett and Scarlett had any more babies.
@regulators88 There is an authorized novel of Rhett Butler called "Rhett Butler's People" written by Donald McCaig that delves into Rhett's childhood, travels, when he meets Scarlett, and what happens after he leaves her. You can find it in any bookstore. Hope that helps!:)
@hopeleannad I actually own the book and I've read it twice. it's pretty good too. There's another book called Scarlett The Sequel to Margaret Mitchell's GONE WITH THE WIND by Alexandria Ripley. It's pretty good too, but it doesn't match up with Rhett Butler's People.

haha she's not traumatized because she maybe kind of wanted it too lol. I don't think he was so violent with her.. I love her expression like she is satisfied lol

Back then it was very damaging to an actor's career. If they did movies they considered "Girly". Its just how it was back in the day.
But deep down I think Gable like doing this movie. You can tell in his performance.
