Does anyone notice the individual driving the car at 3:21 who pulls up right next to Malcolm and looks/stares at him twice before driving off? Now I mean that is either a random person or one of the conspirators following him.
@knoccout7124 I always took it as The Nation's constant harrassment. You notice when the other car speed of,Malcolm glances towards it knowing his life is in imminent danger.
@knoccout7124 Malcome was in such deep thought that he was driving slow down the road, which is why the person next to him looked at him twice before speeding up.
I read in the book Spike made concerning his making of this film, that before Allen Klein released the song to him, they'd already edited this entire sequence. Once they were cleared to use this song, they played it to this sequence and, as you can see, it fit perfectly! No further edits needed. Eerie. So the climax of Sam singing while the cops roll past Malcolm's car was purely God, not an act of editing, according to Spike.
I'm still pissed off that they gave the award to Al Pacino that year when Denzel played the role of his life! Of course, the Academy knew it an later felt obliged to give him the award for 'Training Day', which doesn't come close to his performance in 'Malcolm'.
@genesto100 Well, that's sort of what they did with Pacino, as well. He had been nominated, and lost, SEVEN times prior (for some much better roles). They finally just gave it to him on his eighth try. Denzel the same. After NOT giving to him for "Malcolm X" or "The Hurricane", they gave it to him for "Training Day". Scorsese should have won for "Raging Bull" or "Goodfellas", but later won for "The Departed" instead. The Academy has a habit of "making it up to them", so to speak.
@dkelly26666 You're right and I'm fully aware of this problem. We might also add Paul Neuman's name to the list, having finally been awarded for the Color of Money (what?) when he should have been awarded for Hud many years earlier.
So much for the merit principle when it comes to the Academy's selections!
Denzel Washington played Malcolm X to a t. He definitely should've won a Oscar for that. He's my favorite actor of all time. He also should've won a Oscar for Out Of Time, John Q, Man on Fire, American Gangster and The Book Of Eli. Denzel should have at least seven trophies sitting at home in his trophy case. The Oscars need to start awarding this man for his great work. And for being such an outstanding actor.
Actually, he's won two Oscars so far (Glory and Training Day)...and he's been nominated for several others, including for this performance. Pacino won that year for overacting.
I think what's so dynamic is knowing MX heard this song before he died, he must've heard Sam Cooke's song...this song came out 12/22/64...MX was killed 1/21/65...he not only heard this song but understood it..that's what I want to believe..
I cry every time I watch this. Malcolm calming his family and Sam composing a song that will correctly identify the paigns Blacks suffered throughout these times. Both men were cordial during their lifetimes.
We need to stop killing each other, selling out our own people, and hand delivering each other on a platter (& among other things). I don't know how long its going to take for black people to WISE UP! coming from a young lady who doesn't want to see her people plunge so deeply that we can't crawl our way out.
This is one of the most powerful movies I have ever watched in my life. It makes you mad, sad, all of these emotions in one! Spike Lee is a genius for visualizing this interpretation of Malcolm X's life and allowing us to witness such greatness. Malcolm X - that name itself. I hope history keeps him alive, because there are no words to describe such a man.
@screwface1011 He was great in Training Day. He deserved it. He should've also got an Oscar for this. Before leaning he earned it for Training Day, I always assumed he got it for Malcom X.
every powerful black man ever, i promise u the white man and the police have tried to take them down. God bless malcolm, a true revolutionary destroyed by his country! hw sad
@davisgreen2020 It was obvious that he was bound to be murdered because he went against a powerful religious sect that he talked negative about. If you really look deep into it he got his just deserts. he did not have to go on national tv talking crap about a man who help change the lives of thousands of black men including Malcolm X
I feel that when a REAL MAN see's and CONFIRM bullshit he should either back-up or speak-out...FEAR NOBODY BUT GOD!!!!! I RESPECT THE HELL OUTTA THE BROTHER AND THAT'S REAL!
My favorite scene ever. Love this song and this scene. RIP brother Malcolm !!!!
