The Fiat Uno was probably a better car than even the contemporary VW Polo at the time as it was a more modern design. I love 80's cars like this. It hurts me to say this, but probably true! My dad had two Unos from new - his second one went to c.120,000 miles. I drive a modern Polo at 116,000 miles - can you imagine a modern Punto going to that figure?
I have this car, Im from Indonesia, it is the Uno 70S Abarth with that scorpion wheels. It is such a nimble and peppy car, I won't sell it no matter how often it is breaking down! I
@TahreyUK Yeap. Little sweet things of our life are remembered everytime. If i change it, i probably realize the value of it after it's gone. When i look at my uno even at a short sight, i can hear it whispers: "Let's go together whereever you want to go in this world." :) My girl friends spoke like this too but only my Uno wasn't the liar :) Uno-my Mediterranean; much impulsive and doesn't have a thick, heavy metal ass like the German ones :-) Thanks for your words, islander bro.
I have a Fiat Uno 1.0 i.e. from 1997. , got it 3 years ago from my father that now drives a new Bravo, and i can say that this little Uno is still good looking economical car, it's one of those designs that can hold on forever, from times when cube was considered as a design. Great for city, has that italian roar even if it's only 1.0, and needs eternity from 0-100 km/h, my next car is definitely an Italian again...
@TheSRalston when was the last time you had a look at the underside of a seat? looks fairly normal to me. it's just got slightly uneven colouring on a part that most people won't see very often if at all. could even just be the lighting.
@TahreyUK What? All the seats which collapse, such as these ones, in order to create space for cargo, are always neatly finished, nothing shows, such as here. The last time I looked? Just about 15 minutes ago, and pretty frequently, you schmuck. What are you, a stock holder for Fiat?
@TheSRalston Wow, nice use of language there in response to an honest question. You lose.
I've seen the underside of enough car seats myself, even installed and removed a few, and the finish isn't often that brilliant. In fact, it's at least as bad on my current car. Maybe you've had good luck and I've had bad?
The reviewer didn't seem to make such a big deal about it. And I still maintain that it's not escaping, it's just different colouration of an undyed substance that varies "naturally".
@TheSRalston And no, I'm not a stockholder. Just been around enough of their cars (& plenty other makes) the last 25+ years to know that their build quality isn't actually as bad as the (1970s) jokes make out, and the interior finish is usually pretty good, if spartan. They can't do electrics for toffee however, or at least couldn't until recently.
I were to profile, then given your choice of insult I wouldn't immediately put money on you having done the same. Entirely possible, but less likely
@LondonItalian Sure, maybe this was an exception. It seems odd that they didn´t cared to edit this, at least they could have taken a shot from another car. The thing is, it is kind of strange to have these small defects on today cars, even in low priced ones. Cheers!
@lee2217 trying to reverse up and out of a steep driveway without having to heel + toe, which could be quite difficult with the infamous "italian ape" pedal/wheel positioning and shoddy right-hand-drive conversions? and a handbrake that's hard to pull on because it's blocked by a gearlever can also be hard to release for the same reason.
i get you now,yeh the fiat driving position aint the best, but i drove uno's for 5 ish years and never had any probs selecting gears with handbrake on or of
I`ve had many Uno` & Panda`s & currently have 2x Uno 60`s & a Panda 750 that I use as town cars, I love them to bits & have as much fun in them as I do in my XJR or Porsche! I also have 2x Mk1 Punto`s (60S & Sporting) & although they are more fun than alot of other small cars, they feel too heavy compared to the lightweight Uno & Panda`s, so dont handle as well.
I also regularly drive a new 500 1.2 Sport, that feels too slow, heavy & cramped in comparison, I like the new Panda 100hp though!
@LondonItalian Odd, the modern 500 isn't so much heavier than the old Panda, and should be competitive with the Uno... but with more power and torque available. Maybe it's something in the suspension tuning...
(Given the stats, I'd expect the 1.2 to be close in performance to a Polo GT, which was a couple tiers up from my old 1.05 that would only-just lose in a race vs a friend's Panda 900...)
@TahreyUK The Panda 750 is 715kg, the Uno 60s is 760kg & the 500 1.2 is 865kg (the 500`s go up to 980kg), so theres quite a difference!
The Uno has the edge on handling as it has a wider track than the Panda, but is lower & lighter than the 500 (& new Panda).
There is a guy who`s put the 1.4 100hp current FIRE engine into a standard looking classic Panda, he hits 60 in 7.7 secs! He`s also putting a 170bhp Abarth 1.4 FIRE engine into an Uno Turbo... which is nice ;-]
@LondonItalian 715kg? That's lighter even than the Smart... I must have been thinking of an entirely different competitor...! Though I was still thinking 760~800 vs 860. The weight of an extra passenger, but not a huge amount considering that there are plenty of small cars about now that are over the tonne - including the US-spec 500!
860+ vs less than 720 IS a hell of a difference though. That'd make the 45hp old model as quick off the line & X-country as the just-phased-out 54hp 1100cc...
@Lanciarules Because of many reasons..My Uno still looks like brand new. It's performence is like the first times. I had many memories with that cute thing. Many of my friends' new model cars broke down but mine never. Cars which were produced after Uno, became outmoded as design but Uno didn't. I think I will be using this car in 2030 too. On the other hand; many new cars have upper safety for any crash. A big accident can be my end while I'm inside my little Uno. Must I buy a new safety car?
@Muwattalli1 You could maybe have a first generation Punto? Very nearly the same car, much as they tried to hide it, merely a bit more refined in a number of small ways :-)
I don't think they've aged all so badly either, thanks to the very clean lines. The second generation ones though... ugh.
I have a 11 years old UNO which is my first car and it was bought after highschool before university. I'm the first owner of my UNO. It still works well so I can't change it. I'm afraid because it can be my first and last car.
@Muwattalli1 Well hey - if it still works, does what you need it to, and you like it ... why change :-)
I had to though... I was infatuated with my first little Polo (almost like a Uno but made of thicker - and heavier - metal :-D) but needed more space and more speed, and couldn't afford or fit two cars. With a quieter life and more freedom to cruise, I'd still have it.
Had the first model - new in '87 - It was perky, quiet and fun - but the gearbox was so bad (no change later then) we sent it back. Local taxi firm ran a few of them too and had similar g'box problems. Shame really.
@AustinSomerset they didn't seem to "get" transmissions until this side of the millennium - my mother had both a Panda ('86) and then a Punto ('94!) which ate their own gears without much provocation. But my dad's been running about in a New Panda for about 3 years now and still describes the 'box as about the best he's ever used.
@TahreyUK My Mother in Law is lousy with gearboxes. She hires cars when she visits us and out of a Fiesta, Peugeot 206 and 207, Fiat Punto Grande, Renault Clio & VW Golf, she's only 'got on' with the boxes in the last three. She now drives a New Corsa - which shares bits with the Punto underneath. Good to know Fiat got it together, eventually! :)
why would you put on the handbrake while being in reverse gear anyway? strange britts... usually you do that while you are waiting at the traffic light in first gear
@kalel0192 Never used a backwars hill start, anyway you can do that by starting the engine, pushing the foot pedal (brake) and putting it out the hand brake
@215alessio Depends how your pedals are set up, steepness of the hill, how tall the reverse gear is. Generally if it's a hill steep enough that you'd seriously want to rest on the handbrake at first, you're going to need to give the car some gas so it doesn't stall when you let the clutch in ... or are you thinking of an automatic?
"Starting" in reverse is pretty rare, but there's certainly steeeep roads in my town where I might want to reverse-parallel-park in (or exit from) a certain slot!
@TahreyUK well that reverse starting in handbrake can be avoided and is a rare thing. So the engeneers didn't take it in consideration.
But Hey this car was top engeneered 820 KG light, super handling, more roomy than a GolF mark 2 . anti intrusion door bars already in 1987 (not on Golf mark 2 till 1992)
Fun to drive and yes some of them still ride after 20 years, they shurely outlived the Ford Ka mark 1.
I had a 1991 45 Fire Uno as my first car. I absolutely loved that little car, it was so much fun to drive and had plenty of character. He's right about the 'Italian snarl' through the notchy gearchange too! I traded it in for a 1999 Bravo....overall I think I liked my Uno best.
@DanishForGermany : you suck dudee, If we look at the cars of today old cars suck, let me take some examples : aston martin's , mercedes , audi's , and not to forget the bugatti veyron and etc. i can go on forever with cars of todat that would eat cars of the 80's and 90's
In Brazil I have one of the lasts models 06/07. It´s 65/66cv- on alcool or gasoline. 0-100km in 14 secs. The problems the guy pointed were all solved, small great car, in the city, stepping on it fells like a sport car.
Let's be fair, by the time this Uno appeared in 1990, Fiat were well ahead of comparable British cars by this time. Rover had only Japanese-designed cars on its ledger plus the ancient Maestro, which was no competitor for the Uno.
@RoadCone411 Heck, Rover was mainly plonking out stodgy Honda clones by the end of the century. It was less obvious because some were models Honda didn't even think would sell in the UK... but stick a Rover badge on something that's otherwise a dog and SOMEONE will still buy it "because it's British"... or at least, the logo is glued on somewhere in Longbridge just before it's put on the transporter to the showroom.
BTW, not many Unos left vs Fiestas - pushrod-engined festas are nuke-proof!
I lost my uno 60s after it hit 88mph and vanished into the time vortex back to the 80's.
