I am a big fan of Matthew Ryan, I have been since May Day. Yet, I have to admit, that when your talking about a larger audience he is lacking something. I am not surprised the major labels have passed on him. He looks awkward and doesn't even make eye contact with the camera. Maybe that was a directors choice in the video but if you also look at some of the live shows of him I notice some of the same things. There needs to be more character.
I knew this guy had talent and vision when I heard this song. Once I saw the video, I knew one more thing about him: he's batshit crazy. The body language cues are classic for a person trying really hard to hide the fact that they're hearing voices. Take my word for it or show it to your favorite mental health worker. Once you know what you're looking for it sticks out like a sore thumb. Puts the lyrics into perspective, as well.
You write in no uncertain terms. Even his newest albums has the same pervasive melancholic feel as all the other albums. I like Mayday because it was a bit more rollicking at least in parts.
What really makes a great songwriter is the breadth of the songbook. I think of Leonard Cohen and Townes Van Zandt to name a couple.

One of the best out there. Bright Eyes-good, Tom Waits-good. You cannot stop this man. He keeps writing stunning song after stunning song.
The new songs "Jane..." and "Closing In" are some of his best yet. He blows me away with every release.
Too bad Universal (I believe they bought A&M) couldn't pull it's head out of it's ass and market him right. What a shame.
