@HamburgAirport They're actually Italian pilots and the plane is American, the wings of the plane (MD 11) are very short compared to the length of the plane and in windy days landings were difficult, and to add to all that the airport itself is a challenge to land there lol.
I was on one of the JAL MD-11's during a hard landing in Dallas once, you could seen the entire plane twisting from your seat on touchdown, wouldn't get me back on one of those things again
That's not only a testament to the pilot who showed great skill in making the landing, but also those involved in the development and construction of the plane. The amount of force exerted on that rear left landing gear would have been immense.
Great pilot skills. Very brave. Excellent job done dealing with that gusty crosswind. I bet a lot of pilots wouldn't have made it at Kai Tak in such situation.
those stupid comments .. Alitalia is a company very safe. she has lived a hard time because of its administrative staff that has destroyed it. But still it has excellent pilots and a lot of new airplanes. You can criticize his administration, but not the safety and efficiency of the pilots. however, everytime you have the possibility, you joke italian people..instead we're a great people..and you?
and for the ignorant: this airport's famous for its difficult approach and it is a md11 not dc10
Imposible, because this Alitalia MD 11 lokks very much like a freighter and not a passenger plane and all flight crew members have to be on their positions with safety belts fixed to their seats
Stop the vid at 0:08 and you can see the windsock coming into view on the right side. Crosswind is at about 5-10kts. Windsock gets picked by the dissipating wake of the MD11.
So the problem wasn't the crosswind, but an overshoot of the centerline, which was not a rare occasion; the approach did not leave much room for error.
So all in all, this should have been a clear go around. Especially when you realize that you will touch down significantly off centerline.
Thank you for your very good comment. They were very lucky not to perform the FedEx Narita disaster. The MD 11 is a very special a/c with high approach speeds, about 160 kts. with full flaps, especially as a heavy loaded freighter.
im so happy that the new airport is there after watching all of these videos, it puts me off flying looking at these and im not a good flyer at the best of times and phew so glad for chek lap kok :D
Traditional Alitalia.... I flew them once, JFK-FCO. We booked business class, but they overbooked so we were downgraded to the Non-Smoking section of Economy class without refund (everyone smoked anyways, and im a non-smoker), we left the gate 2 hours late, but had to return for another 3 because of a problem (we had to stay onboard) My bags ended up in Tokyo, they gave us no luxuries (only 1 glass of water) There was no Entertainmet and our landing was worse than the one in the video above
My dad was piloting the Cathay Pacific jumbo that you see at the start of this video, and subsequently witnessed this landing live.
Apparently there was silence from the surrounding planes immediately following the landing, presumably while all of them gasped at what they had just witnessed.
Finally, one of them broke the silence with a loud "MAMMA MIA!!!", much to everyone's amusement (perhaps with the exception of the Italian pilots)!
@Freenelsonmandela But anway - if your dad was in there - he wasn't able to see what happening there because the angle of an airplane's cockpit is ... likely shit - Pilot's speaking. :)
@Freenelsonmandela You obviously have not been inside a 747 cockpit. Your dad would not be able to watch it live, as they touched down way down the runway, by then the landing would be out of sight! So much for witnessing it "live"
Sobelou, you must have tons of hours on flight sim 2000 to try to call this a correct crosswind landing. Wrong rudder because he has overcorrected to the downwind side followed by a horrible wing low maneuver that barely manages to keep the right gear out of the grass. Back to the books kid.
The aircraft looks very much like a freighter, so hopefully there were no passengers on board, but I'm sure the flight crew was scared shitless. the more often I see the video, the more I'm shouting "go around!" Narita FedEx disaster was later, but showed, what wind shear can do to a MD 11.
@irongloves You are 100% right, with a crosswind like that, on a runway like that, you either put it down firmly and stop on the concrete or start playing around trying to grease it and get an applause from passengers and run the risk of ending up in the water. Landing totally correct, according to all crosswind landing techniques.
@xhappyxlifex Sorry happy, not true. MD11 wings are a little longer than those on its daddy the DC10-30, problem with landing it is that many DC10 trained pilots incorrectly assume that they both have the same landing characteristics,.In fact you can finish the flare and arrest the descent with elevator control on the 10, since the CG is so close to the tail. Also Alitalia has the worst food you will ever taste and the rudest airline employees I've ever dealt with. Never again will I make the mistake of taking an Alitalia flight.
@mhoney83 Its really difficult to land at Kai Tak because t=you don't have a "Straight-in" approach since the place is surrounded by mountains, apartments and... the sea. The runway is also really short, so they really need as much runway as they can to stop. Buildings near the runway were quite tall, so they slammed on the runway at a high altitude, but fortunately, Chek Lap Kok airport (the new airport in HK) has long runways and is an island so landings should be smoother.
@wongavery1698 Oooh okay. here in my town the run way is short but there are no buildings or mountains near it..but i understand...i flew for the first time in march and really, really freaked out on my way back from my trip...thanks so much for explaining the reasons to me.. :)
In the end it's good that Kai Tak closed. It was only a matter of time before a major catastrophe occurred there. But thankfully it didn't.
Kai Tak was hands down THE SCARIEST landing I ever made as a passenger.
When you are practically landing sideways at 200ft agl, with the bay coming at your starboard window and then suddenly yaw back to the center line, it freaks you the f__k out. : )
They were very close to punching the main right gear down on soft terrain. The possiblities after that..esp with that taxiing 747??? Kai Tak was fun to watch but its prob a good thing the other airport was built, for safety reasons alone .
@Saimone008 this airport is notorius for cross wind landings, whos to say he could even get it lined up next time? he got it down, and was in controll of the aircraft the entire time.

ayo he needs to walk back to that simulater dawg cuz that was shitty man. wtf? it wasn't that windy i mean damn he almost skid off tha edge of the runway. i dont trust pilots these days especially man. dude thats why u hav tha TO/GA switches if its such a poorly executed turn to intercept tha runway man he could hav just easily went around to perform a better approach. approach it more to tha left wen executin tha right turn cuz of tha wind.slightright rudder counteract tha crab.tricky approach.
given the cross wind conditions, i think the pilot did a super job. These situations are not easy to manage, specially if there is too much per second variation in wind speeds and directions. Pilot did great, deserves pat on the back!

You gotta give the person credit for landing at all. Not everyones perfect.

ur right and especially at Kai Tak. Its just so risky and I really give credit to pilots who dare land there

ayo he needs to walk back to that simulater dawg cuz that was shitty man. wtf? it wasn't that windy i mean damn he almost skid off tha edge of the runway. i dont trust pilots these days especially man. dude thats why u hav tha TO/GA switches if its such a poorly executed turn to intercept tha runway man he could hav just easily went around to perform a better approach. approach it more to tha left wen executin tha right turn cuz of tha wind.slightright rudder counteract tha crab.tricky approach.

given the cross wind conditions, i think the pilot did a super job. These situations are not easy to manage, specially if there is too much per second variation in wind speeds and directions. Pilot did great, deserves pat on the back!
