  • alitaliaaaaa!!!!

  • Any landing you can walk away from...

  • Pwned.

  • Wow. These crazy dudes. Russians.

  • @HamburgAirport They're actually Italian pilots and the plane is American, the wings of the plane (MD 11) are very short compared to the length of the plane and in windy days landings were difficult, and to add to all that the airport itself is a challenge to land there lol.

  • I was on one of the JAL MD-11's during a hard landing in Dallas once, you could seen the entire plane twisting from your seat on touchdown, wouldn't get me back on one of those things again

  • considering all thats said about the MD 11's handling quirks these guys did pretty well

  • Better than I could do ;o)

  • That's not only a testament to the pilot who showed great skill in making the landing, but also those involved in the development and construction of the plane. The amount of force exerted on that rear left landing gear would have been immense.

  • Great pilot skills. Very brave. Excellent job done dealing with that gusty crosswind. I bet a lot of pilots wouldn't have made it at Kai Tak in such situation.

  • did that count as a crash?

  • @MaxIsPro1 Did it crash? Simple question... :D

  • @MaxIsPro1 No, it didn´t, the airplane leave the runway in one piece..:)

  • Asian drivers.

  • those stupid comments .. Alitalia is a company very safe. she has lived a hard time because of its administrative staff that has destroyed it. But still it has excellent pilots and a lot of new airplanes. You can criticize his administration, but not the safety and efficiency of the pilots. however, everytime you have the possibility, you joke italian people..instead we're a great people..and you?

and for the ignorant: this airport's famous for its difficult approach and it is a md11 not dc10

  • @sheverardez ben detto

  • You can tell by the smoke drifting that he's dealing with one bitch ass crosswind.

  • Crazy Russians.

  • @xxxxcocotazoxxxx Alitalia = Italy , Kai Tak = Hong Kong, where are the Russians there?

  • The landing while a bit off, is a good one. Either a sudden crosswind or downdraft caught the plane requiring a bit of side slip but done well.

  • I've seen less good...

  • Imagine A Person in the bathroom during that, DAM@!

  • @DannyVids11

Imposible, because this Alitalia MD 11 lokks very much like a freighter and not a passenger plane and all flight crew members have to be on their positions with safety belts fixed to their seats

  • i miss kai tak

  • unbeliveible

  • Stop the vid at 0:08 and you can see the windsock coming into view on the right side. Crosswind is at about 5-10kts. Windsock gets picked by the dissipating wake of the MD11.

So the problem wasn't the crosswind, but an overshoot of the centerline, which was not a rare occasion; the approach did not leave much room for error.

So all in all, this should have been a clear go around. Especially when you realize that you will touch down significantly off centerline.

  • @MrDBater

Thank you for your very good comment. They were very lucky not to perform the FedEx Narita disaster. The MD 11 is a very special a/c with high approach speeds, about 160 kts. with full flaps, especially as a heavy loaded freighter.

  • Lol the guy in the 747 must be shitting him self

  • ummmmm, centerline anyone?

  • im so happy that the new airport is there after watching all of these videos, it puts me off flying looking at these and im not a good flyer at the best of times and phew so glad for chek lap kok :D

  • ur fired!!!

  • tu l'as echappé bel mon gas...

  • Singapore Airlines at 0:15 in the background?

  • @Rexang1 Yeap!!

  • @Rexang1

    Yup.

  • Traditional Alitalia.... I flew them once, JFK-FCO. We booked business class, but they overbooked so we were downgraded to the Non-Smoking section of Economy class without refund (everyone smoked anyways, and im a non-smoker), we left the gate 2 hours late, but had to return for another 3 because of a problem (we had to stay onboard) My bags ended up in Tokyo, they gave us no luxuries (only 1 glass of water) There was no Entertainmet and our landing was worse than the one in the video above

  • Jesus they're going to have to put a new set of tires on that one.

  • just a great landing, otherwise he crashed in the water

  • @thegilles6

Is'nt a go around a better option? This landing must have scared the shit out of the flight crew.

  • what is rough landing? putting more pressure on landing gears or crosswind?

  • that 747 right there is like oh shit!

  • plane did a burnout lol

  • I'd say the crew of that 747 were thinking...oh shit he isn't is he !

  • Alitalia...what do you expect?

  • @MrMouns63 you talk rubbish, mouns, sounds turkish, if there's one country in the world which i don't trust about flying, its turkey

  • Which flight sim was this in as a default airport that was released the latest?

  • He's burning some rubber there!

  • well that pilot doesn't have any flight experience

  • Pilot like wha??

  • You know, I wonder how many accidents happen at this airport per year, considering your description of the video?

  • My dad was piloting the Cathay Pacific jumbo that you see at the start of this video, and subsequently witnessed this landing live.

Apparently there was silence from the surrounding planes immediately following the landing, presumably while all of them gasped at what they had just witnessed.

Finally, one of them broke the silence with a loud "MAMMA MIA!!!", much to everyone's amusement (perhaps with the exception of the Italian pilots)!

  • @Freenelsonmandela How could he see the plane touch down. Did he have his head out the window?

  • @Freenelsonmandela LOL! That is a great story.. :-) Does the ol man still fly?

  • @Freenelsonmandela But anway - if your dad was in there - he wasn't able to see what happening there because the angle of an airplane's cockpit is ... likely shit - Pilot's speaking. :)

  • @Freenelsonmandela You obviously have not been inside a 747 cockpit. Your dad would not be able to watch it live, as they touched down way down the runway, by then the landing would be out of sight! So much for witnessing it "live"

  • Comment removed

  • i wonder how many runway lights he took out?

  • thumb's up for the pilot

  • Why the close kia tak i know it was the crazy as vfr aprroch but the official resone?

  • @VitexProductions They closed Kai Tak 1998 because it was way too small to keep up with the busy Hong Kong air traffic.

  • Sobelou, you must have tons of hours on flight sim 2000 to try to call this a correct crosswind landing. Wrong rudder because he has overcorrected to the downwind side followed by a horrible wing low maneuver that barely manages to keep the right gear out of the grass. Back to the books kid.

  • GO ALITALIA The Airline For The WOGS!!

  • why the planes dont have to line up with hong kong kai tak

  • In Soviet Russia, planes land you

  • @19KamiKaze42 planes can land you anywhere, not just soviet russia. it's autolanding (dnt know what it's called, anybody plz correct me if i'm wrong)

  • @jamiekenta

    DUDE? seriously?

why do u take that sentence so literally?

    It's a JOKE

  • @19KamiKaze42 yeah i know, but it's a pretty old and not so funny one, which is why i said what I said.

  • ride 'em cowboy!

Slightly unorthodox but down in one piece!

  • those pilots of the 747 were like aaaahhhhh!!

  • thats a go around if ever i saw one!

  • pax would have shit themselves

  • @aceridgey

The aircraft looks very much like a freighter, so hopefully there were no passengers on board, but I'm sure the flight crew was scared shitless. the more often I see the video, the more I'm shouting "go around!" Narita FedEx disaster was later, but showed, what wind shear can do to a MD 11.

  • who cares if its rough or not, isnt it better to survive but i have to admit it is really rough, i hate rough landings

  • That Pliot was like " No go arounds! Were putting this baby down now" Every landing is a good landing a pilot told me once :)

  • Wonder how many lights he/she took out.

  • dude wtf is up with this airport, why are pilots landing crazy, this is so weird!!!!

  • Those Singapore 747 pilots just looked at each other and both said simultaneously..."HOLY SH#^ Did you just see that?!?!??!!"

  • Comment removed

  • were these pilots never taught to go around? Very dumb landing considering one wheel is off the runway.. bloody cowboys

  • WTF go around!!

  • Excellent landing. U all bastards could you land an MD11 with crosswinds like that? No, so STFU!

  • @irongloves You are 100% right, with a crosswind like that, on a runway like that, you either put it down firmly and stop on the concrete or start playing around trying to grease it and get an applause from passengers and run the risk of ending up in the water. Landing totally correct, according to all crosswind landing techniques.

  • must be a beginer

  • @xxxlovehastlexxx not really, MD11 are hard to land cause of the wings being shorter than the usual, now imagine that in an airport like Kai Tak lol

  • @xhappyxlifex ohhhhh

  • @xhappyxlifex Sorry happy, not true. MD11 wings are a little longer than those on its daddy the DC10-30, problem with landing it is that many DC10 trained pilots incorrectly assume that they both have the same landing characteristics,.In fact you can finish the flare and arrest the descent with elevator control on the 10, since the CG is so close to the tail. On the 11, you need to use engine power, to avoid either a tail strike or too much vertical speed

  • ALITALIA: Always Late In Takeoff, Always Late In Arrival. A Little Italian Tit And Lotsa Italian Ass. A Little Italian Tradition And Lotsa Italian Attitude. Aircraft Lands In Tokyo And Luggage In Athens. How do you recognize an Alitalia airplane? By the hair under its wings.

  • @LoSamZayin it also uses old hair-grease for fuel

  • The Italians can never do anything right.

  • @WAYTOPLUTO Fuck you stronzo!

  • @WAYTOPLUTO Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Prada, Gucci, Armani, Versace, Ermenegildo Zegna, most popular and most copied cuisine in the world etc.etc. Need I go on? Heck you write with the ROMAN alphabet. Can't do anything right?? Get a life!

  • nice video

  • pilot needs some new strides me thinks......defo brown trouser moment lol

  • i wondered what the captain in the 747 was thinkin LMAO!

  • I would've gone around this missed the runway

  • It is Alitalia ?

  • that md11 took a beating nice video

  • This is your captain speaking.... Thank you for flying with us! We hope you enjoyed the flight.

  • @TheGtaKevin ya not funny...its not like anything even broke if it had overshot or broke a gear THEN that would be funny...but ya

  • @thefsxandREALpilot yeah sure, you know everything best I guess? I bet I know more about airplanes then you, mr FSX. (By the way, FSX rocks)

  • @TheGtaKevin no i dont know everything best, you might know mor ebout planes then me idk and im not mr FSX but thankyou i have no clue what any of that has to do with anything but ok

  • Also Alitalia has the worst food you will ever taste and the rudest airline employees I've ever dealt with. Never again will I make the mistake of taking an Alitalia flight.

  • this is why i never go to ai Tak Airport in Hong Kong

  • Is exciting if landing at this airport.. you could touch the gear on the Roof =_=(gag only..)"

  • i would have powered up and did it again that was really rough @wongavery1698

  • that's one good pilot, given the circumstances.

  • why were they always landing like that

  • @mhoney83 Its really difficult to land at Kai Tak because t=you don't have a "Straight-in" approach since the place is surrounded by mountains, apartments and... the sea. The runway is also really short, so they really need as much runway as they can to stop. Buildings near the runway were quite tall, so they slammed on the runway at a high altitude, but fortunately, Chek Lap Kok airport (the new airport in HK) has long runways and is an island so landings should be smoother.

  • @wongavery1698 Oooh okay. here in my town the run way is short but there are no buildings or mountains near it..but i understand...i flew for the first time in march and really, really freaked out on my way back from my trip...thanks so much for explaining the reasons to me.. :)

  • @wongavery1698

In the end it's good that Kai Tak closed. It was only a matter of time before a major catastrophe occurred there. But thankfully it didn't.

Kai Tak was hands down THE SCARIEST landing I ever made as a passenger.

When you are practically landing sideways at 200ft agl, with the bay coming at your starboard window and then suddenly yaw back to the center line, it freaks you the f__k out. : )

  • @patton303 I used to love flying into (and out of) Kai Tak. Scary? No, just exciting.

  • They were very close to punching the main right gear down on soft terrain. The possiblities after that..esp with that taxiing 747??? Kai Tak was fun to watch but its prob a good thing the other airport was built, for safety reasons alone .

  • SLAMMING-DOWN

  • btw looking at the windsock it wasn't much of a crosswind.

  • Thats a horrible landing, if you're ever in a position like that go around, give it another shot.

  • shit lol that landing was hard

  • taxiing 747 had a good view of that

  • Taxiing 747 got a nice view of that

  • thats a GREAT LANDING in crosswind like that.

  • so much for going for the center line

  • Holy crap the right main gear almost touched down in the grass! That must have been a scary landing for the passengers.

I wonder what the 747 flight crew thought at 0:09 when they witnessed that hard landing.

  • thats not a bad landing. thats awesome.

  • @kristianspitfire No... Is a bad landing, it touch ground to fast, maybe -400ft Too much! The crosswindgreat, but the landing :S

  • wooow, mr pilot did a good job :) but ...shouldn't he go around? i think it would be safer and less stressful for everyone on board :P

  • i feel sorry for the tires XD

  • Rough that ain't rough, rough landing is when the plane crash a no one dies THAT'S ROUGH LANDING !!!!!

  • @Saimone008 this airport is notorius for cross wind landings, whos to say he could even get it lined up next time? he got it down, and was in controll of the aircraft the entire time.

  • wow, that was an impressive crab angle...despite how rough that looked, he did a great job!

  • @exile907

great job? should have went around, landed outside the runway!

  • pilot in the 747 was shitting himself!!

  • I think I heard a tire explode at 0:10

  • haha italian pilots:P

  • haha dodgy Alitalia wog

  • Ai, essa foi feia. Mas conciderando que o aeroporto é Kai Tak, é um pouso até que normal

  • crosswind landing!! that is very nice if you can hold the plane

  • damn italians xD

  • @Alex31121234 lol

  • @Thankots im italian my self xD

  • @Alex31121234 That makes it even funnier!

  • @Thankots i know lol xD

  • Prob an ex BA pilot drinking before the flight again

    PEACE!

  • it is a shame that the person is pilot and fly this thing....

  • That was a close one..

  • well, curbs are track, right? :)

  • skill, baby! skill!

    major respect!

just another crosswind landing by a couple experienced pilots.

wondered how many passengers pissed their pants on that one? :)

  • The crew of the 744 (747-400 ) take some laughts about that landing xD

  • Smokin!

  • talk about a heavy crosswind! that was nowhere close to the runway

  • pilots in the 747 was like WHAOOO DID U SEE THAT DAMN DUDE

  • great landing for me!

  • landing? this was reported as a crash.

  • That was hard enough to cause structural damage, no doubt !!

  • Wonder what the pilots in the Jumbo where thinking when they saw it! But hey, I give the guy credit for getting that plane down

  • god dam tha was hard landing

  • i'm glad i wasnt in there

  • You gotta give the person credit for landing at all. Not everyones perfect.

  • ur right and especially at Kai Tak. Its just so risky and I really give credit to pilots who dare land there

  • that is just crazy

  • YEEEEEE HAAWW

  • guys this airport doesnt have an ILS system. they have to make visual landings!!!!

  • i love the dc10!

  • i love the md-11, the aircraft in this video

  • Oh my God

  • Extreme left pedal

  • o_O

  • I'm asking what did the people from the Boeing747 on the other runway said to each other

  • GOD DAMN!!! DID YOU SEE THAT!!!

  • for u a rough landing but for me was it an NORMAL landing!!!!!!

  • @banaan2555 you just keep flying that simulator

  • ayo he needs to walk back to that simulater dawg cuz that was shitty man. wtf? it wasn't that windy i mean damn he almost skid off tha edge of the runway. i dont trust pilots these days especially man. dude thats why u hav tha TO/GA switches if its such a poorly executed turn to intercept tha runway man he could hav just easily went around to perform a better approach. approach it more to tha left wen executin tha right turn cuz of tha wind.slightright rudder counteract tha crab.tricky approach.

  • given the cross wind conditions, i think the pilot did a super job. These situations are not easy to manage, specially if there is too much per second variation in wind speeds and directions. Pilot did great, deserves pat on the back!
