  • Why isnt Nxe5 a fair option for white because after d5, white gains the material back and maintains a slightly better position

  • What program do you use?

  • What if as soon as the Classical Defense is achieved, white's knight captures the pawn? If the black knight takes, white could just play d4, forking the bishop and knight.

  • 6:07 did a new guy start narrating or you changed your voice?

  • what line follows after 3 ... d6

  • why cant the pawn move from a7 to a6?

  • Thank you.

  • Great video, I gained a lot of understanding, but if you tersely examined the reasonings/simplier lines for beginners (i.e. why did not white take the apparently free e4 pawn) it would be greatly appreciated and help us unaware of the nauances involved with such positions.

  • i fucking hate playing against this defense

  • @Jack8the8Ripper Then that tells you what you need to do.

  • hi jrobichess. what if after white move bishop B5. the black move pawn A8. can i terminate the black knight? sorry if tihs question has already ask...

  • Thank you for this video. I't helps a lot.

  • jrobi, what type of chess engine do you use for analysis?

  • How to select frames with green arrows :) ? plz answer :D

  • It is not created by clergyman Ruy Lopez.. although it is named after him, this particular opening was known earlier; it is included in the Gottengen manuscript, which dates from 1490.

  • How come when white plays bishop to b5, black doesnt play night to d4 so you are threatening the bishop and offering up the knight trade. That is what I usually do when faced with the ruy lopez. Could Somebody please tell me if this is a good idea or not.

  • @kalculator14 i looked it up for you, and it is called the Bird's defense. apparently, with careful play white comes out a little bit better.. but now you've got a name, so good luck studying it!!!

  • when R U doind the main line?

  • Very nice videos. Please attach PGN files for the master games!

  • I play 4. Nxe5 according to IM Greet's suggestion and it's fine.

If 4.. Qf6 as searcheyeable suggests then simply 5. Nf3?

  • thanks dude. I'm a Ruy Lopez player and I usually got myself dumbfound when black responded with ...Bc5.

Just wondering, do you have any vids on the Berlin Defense? I've heard that this is the 'best' defense against the Spanish, as shown by Kramnik on his match with Kasparov...

  • Is the Ruy Lopez a good opening for a novice player like myself to use?

  • i love this opening

  • what do you think about after the first 3 moves you have nxf5 then nxf5 and then d4?

  • @medicplz

  • @medicplz, yeah it,s good, it forks Knight and black square bishop but it has a weakness. After 4 Nxe5, black's best move there is 4... Qf6. Try it on your board

    and observe.

  • i learn a lot from your vid!! thanks a lot....!!

  • Weiter so!!

  • hey jrobi, i watch you're videos all the time! so i noticed a move at 09:20 after the queen trade when you slowed down the play for a second. i like: white bishop xh6, because if black recaptures, the e file is open for rook xe7. white ends up an extra pawn ahead with very weak black king position. in the real match, the checkmate that occurred was quite elegant :) just thought i'd share

jrobi, we should get a match going on the FICS! i'm an up-and-comer in the mid 1500s. what do you say?

  • JRobichess rules : ) Thank you for the excellent videos!

  • what happends if black doesnt do those exact moves? most people would be like "srry for being so noob" but im not apologizing for asking a question

  • @aaplesauce most chess openings have a main line (which after a while can turn into different variations) if your opponent does something which isnt one of the known variations its either not as good or something that hasnt really been explored by pro chess players. You're going to have to figure out what's your best move considering opening principles and your game plan :)

  • Why would anyone use a strategy with only a 40% win ratio. That means 60% of the time, it is a loser. Am I missing something?

In actuality, the videos I am seeing on You Tube bear this ratio out. It is rare that the Ruy Lopez is on the winning side.

Could anyone explain to me why 40% is a great recommendation for this game plan?

In video after video, the player using Roy Lopez gets his clothing handed to him before being thrown into the street.

Would a real teacher please stand up.

  • @bethcharette the ruy lopez is actually pretty high up there in statistically when compared to other openings. White wins 40% of the time, loses 27% of the time and draws 33% of the time. Compare it to the more passive 4 knights opening, which scores 34% win for white 27% loss and 39% draw!

  • @bethcharette its a 32% draw

  • @bethcharette well, in any opening, you can win lose or draw...obviously winning is the usual objective, but you may only need a draw at the end of a tournament to win the whole thing...No opening is going to win every time...The roy lopez statically says you won't lose around 70% of the time, which sounds much better than you only win 40% of the time...And viceversa, black has around 60% chance not to lose, so it's favorable for both sides, b/c black technically starts a game at a disadvantage.

  • thank you for your wonderful illustration...

  • i like jrobi. ehs a pretty cool guy and doesnt afraid of shwoing his chess powers

  • Why not jjust take the black knight after 4 moves and win a pawn?

  • after the castle, if the black knight takes the "free pawn" in 5. ... Nxe4 and then White queen 6.Qe2 attacking the knight, Why doesn´t black protects its knight with its pawn in 6. ...f5 insted of putting the knight back in f6?.

  • man i would like ur vids so much more if u avoided the % percent talk in every vid for first few mins

  • You seem to mention a lot of the "database" in many of your vids, which database are you getting the data from?

  • one of the strongest opening for white

  • great vid, well done and keep up the good work

  • I love your vids - they got me into the theory of chess. :) But I find this choice of game very strange. As great as Lasker and Steinitz were, this game is kind of redundant from a theoretical perspecitive. Nobody would play Ne7 these days - it would make far more sense to focus on the modern lines.

Nonetheless, thanks for the introduction to chess. I've been playing for a couple of years now and absolutely love the game.

  • 3:18 after the black knight goes to F6, why would white castle when he is actually giving away a free pawn (E4) ?

  • It looks free but it isn't:

    1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Bc5 4. c3 Nf6 5. O-O Nxe4 6. Qe2 Nf6 7. d4 Be7 8.

    dxe5 Nd5

Material is even and white has a stronger position to play from. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • @jrobichess

But Black can respond by playing pawn to A6 which is a good move!

  • @jrobichess hmm i was looking at 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Bc5 4. c3 Nf6 5. O-O Nxe4 6. Qe2 what if then Bxf2+ 7. Rxf2 Nxf2 8. Qxf2 and black has lost a kight and a bishop (6 pawns) and white has lost two pawns and a rook (7 pawns) so black maintains the pawn advantage and white's castle is messed up. . and alternatively instead if on move 7. Kh1 Ng3+ 8. Hxg3 Bxg3 and in this variation white is down three pawns and black a knight, so material is even and whites castle is again pretty messed up

  • @TheMikey00004 7. Kh1 is definitely better for white but after 7...Ng3+ 8. hxg3 Bxg3 9. d4 looks good for white. Black's best is 9...d5 10. Bg5 f6 11. Nxe5 Bxe5 12. Bxc6+ bxc6 13. Bh4 and black's dark bishop will fall. Thus, white remains a piece ahead and black doesn't have enough attackers for a decisive threat on the kingside.

  • @jrobichess But what then of: 6. Qe2 Bxf2! This variation is extremely irritating for white...

  • @jrobichess yeah but what if black asnt play 3. ... Bc5 and maybe 3. ... Nf6 ???

  • @jrobichess Can someone explain to me how this system works? or atleast tell me what it's called so I can look it up, lol

  • @wXingVinny white sacrifice a pawn for initiative

  • I think there should be a second video here.

  • JRobi is a friggin' badass

  • ruy lopez is the best opening

  • Great video! Thanks!

A question: Why does Steinitz moves his King to h8 at that early stage. I haven't seen the end of the game yes but right now seems to me like giving up the pawn att f6 or just giving away the little initiave he had.

Could you tell me what he sees in the coming?

  • Can someone explain the point of the c3 move? Thanks!

  • Prepares for d4, dominance of the middle.

  • Ruy Lopez is the game i always play to win a game

  • this defense doesn't work so well when black moves only pawns in response

  • At 3:23. Why not capture the pawn with the knight instead of castle right after white?

  • if black captures pawn with knight then white replys with bringing the queen or rook on e file. black moves knight to safetly and white can then capture blacks pawn.

  • @ErikakaEP

    It's a different variation

  • at 1,30 why doesnt white just take the knight c6 on with his bishop and then he can capture e5 next move?

  • because of Qd4

  • gooood!

  • well... Steinitz was very old at that point.

  • perhaps you could make a part two to the video so you can go through the moves a bit more.

  • i had beaten chess master but with another chessmaster

  • what

  • Can someone please tell me why the white bishop isn't simply attacked by black's pawn on the a file? Is that a stupid move? I guess I'd do that if someone pulled that opening on me - I need to say though that I just picked up playing chess again and even though I really like it I'm still a naive chess-virgin :)

Thanks for any thoughts on that move.

  • Yes, I would play A6 too but other people like different variations, the classical defense is good too, but if you are more comfortable with that move you can play it

  • It's seen before, but black does not have to worry about the bishop right away. Personally I actually prefer to not tempt the bishop into exchanging because at that point you can only recapture with a pawn, which will destroy your pawn-structure on the queen side

  • Playing ...a6 is a very normal response to Bb5. There is a whole body of opening theory for the Ruy Lopez that turns on the ...a6 response.

  • Is there anything wrong with 4.Nxe5?

  • 4. Nxe5? might not be very good because 4. ... Bxf2+ 5. Kxf2 Nxe5

  • Actually white is quite good here

after 6.d4 Qf6+ 7.Kg1 Ng6(Nc6 8. Be3) and white has a good pawn center and mimimal development advatage and also black gives away thebishop pair advantage.

  • Why wouldn't white play BxC5 to trade for the knight, then take the pawn with F3?

  • I just got Chess Master 10th edition.. Has anyone ever beaten the ChessMaster? It's nearly impossible.

  • At 3:35 After bishop to b6 is white going to play dxe5? How does black respond to that?

  • Nf6xe4

  • *pawn

  • These variations have strange names

  • Ha Ha, ya they do!

  • what chess program are you using?

  • look for fritz 11 or rybka

  • thanks dude

  • im new to chess (JUST started learning a few hours ago actually lol)..

but aside from that, Kudos...because I love to see and whitness people who are VERY prefficient in, or MASTERED, their particular craft (whatever it is, sports, art..whatever).

So yea..Impreesive...i learned some things too.

  • after black plays 3. Bc5 , why doesn't white capture N c6, then pawn takes c 6, then white wins pawn e5 with the knight???

  • Looks tempting but after that black has QD4 and white is in a very troubling position. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • @jrobichess

So it's best to leave the bishop there at c5? When is it good to take N c6 then? I was really curious about the Spanish game and it looks very tempting to take the horse at c6 in order to take black pond at e5. But when i see the following QD4 move i don't think i would wanna risk it anymore. Anyway, thanks for telling us about the QD4 and for these amazing videos!

  • Because after 5. Nxe5 black can play Qd4 which threatens at the same time Qxf2 checkmate and QxNe5 at the next move

And if white plays 6. Nd3 black plays Qxe4+

the pawn is recaptured ans the black's position is better.

  • Online Databases?

  • after white castles, around 3:23, why doesnt black just take the centre pawn, instead of castling as well?

  • It creates a more favorable position for white. For example:

    1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Bc5 4. c3 Nf6 5. O-O Nxe4 6. Qe2 Nf6 7. d4 Be7 8.

    dxe5 Nd5

Material is even and white has a stronger and more dominant position to play from. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • jrobichess = my fave youtube videos

  • Thanks aaron602!

  • I have to say ...you are the best chess book on youtube.....

  • Thanks pik4lif!

  • pls More Openings

  • congratulations you are very good

    are you master?

  • jrobi you need to mke a video on the hungairan defence

  • Hungarian is using by noobs, who wants to avoid reall fighting

  • we should play so you can lose

  • Hungarian is simply too pasive.

  • for u mabe.. its not passive if u know how to use it

  • yo jrob man theres a siccialian opening i would like you to go over it, the vairation is the O'Kelly vairation there is a trap in there that is very good

  • Why is Bb5 better than Bc4? Bc4 would give the bishop more diaginoals and more mobility and would cover more squares, right? Also at b5 the bishop could be chased back by pawns.

  • Both Bb5 and Bc4 are good options for white. The Ruy Lopez variations deal with Bb5. I plan on taking a look at Bc4 options in future videos. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • can somebody please please please explain to me why white doesnt take the knight in the beinning; Bxc6, leaving white to doubled pawns and then using the knight to take a pawn; Nxe5.... HELP!!!!

  • Thats what i'm thinking.

    Pawn up, + doubled pawns?

  • Queen to D4 from black swings things in black's favor in terms of positional strength early in the opening. It looks like a free pawn but it isn't. For example:

    1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Bc5 4. Bxc6 dxc6 5. Nxe5 Qd4 6. Nd3 Qxe4+ 7. Qe2

    Qxe2+ 8. Kxe2 *

White's king is exposed, and while material is equal black has almost a full point in overall positional strength from the engine analysis. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • coz the e pawn falls. and opening d file is advantage for black at that stage, coz it give the bishop and queen more mobility. i hope it helps

  • Sure, while taking Knight with Bishop is an option and leaves black with double pawns it doesn't leave white up a pawn because after white's Bxc6 black replies dxc6 and now if white tries to take the hanging pawn with Nxe5 black plays Qd4 and has a mate threat at f2 and also attacks whites hanging knight at e5. The only way to defend both is to play Nd3 and then black can take pawn with queen or play Nf6 with ideas of Nxe4 after white castles. Black is ahead in development and white is cramped.

  • Can white opt to capture th knight but then not capture pawn. It seems as though that might eliminate the mate threat but it will also open the queen's file and open the gate for blacks bishop. White kills a doubles up blacks pawns though. Is this at all a viablel option for white. I am a beginner so sorry if this is a dumb question.

  • Bc6 is aplayable move and it is called exghange variation!!Ne5 isnt good because balck plays Qe7 and if white support his knight with a a pawn,d6.

  • In theory, yes, exchanging the attacking Bishop for Black's defending Knight to capture Black's e5 pawn seems quite logical, but it is a huge opening error. Black can simply go 5... Qd4! (after White captures the e5 pawn), attacking both the Knight and the e4 pawn. White either loses the Knight and suffers major material loss, or is forced to lose the pawn, losing central control.

  • i just won with the ruy lopez so i am pretty happy..lol

  • I wish I knew the proper black response to the white bishop on b5 attacking blacks knight. I never know what to play when this moves come

  • why not capture white's e4 pawn instead of castling 3:28

  • That's because the pawn can be capture back easily with Qe2 and d3, so after, white will get some space advantage.

  • after Bc5 why not b4?

  • Wow... I yearn to have Lasker's position in 9:10...it looks perfectly flawless.

    Every piece is protected.

  • one of my favorite chess opening . was actually the first opening i learned

  • Why doesnt he just use the bishop on b5 to take the knight on c4? Why doesnt he just take it? It stacks his pawns etc...

  • What happens if black plays d6 instead of Kd6? Is that a Ruy Lopez? Is that an advantage for White or Black?

  • One Of My favorite openings to play

  • You, my friend, are phenomenal

  • I really like watching these videos, not only does it give great examples for opening moves, but really makes you think deeper about the game.

  • great videos i was wondering where do you play on line chess? and all so whats a good chess book to read? cheers mate anthony.

  • Awesome video, thanks! I have to say, you have a really thick Canadian accent.

  • isn't normally said roo-ee? (i'm english if that makes a diff)

  • I have heard it both ways from various people. Guess the way I say it just sticks with me for some reason when I am talking. =)

Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • When white plays bishop b5, why wouldn't black just play pawn to a6 and threaten it? That seems like the intuitive thing to do. Anyone?

  • That's a variation for another vid - thanks for checking out this one.

  • i think thats actually the most commonly played reply by black. things still turn out pretty tasty for white even though black can force white to move the bishop several times.

  • that's morphy's defense

  • Excellent video... thanks for posting!

  • Great information, I'll bear it in mind next game I play

  • What is the name of the variation after Bb6 ? at 3:36 ?

  • i think archangelsk variation

  • Lasker was so ahead of Steinitz... Given, he learned a lot from Steinitz, but moved a couple notches past. He didn't have any competition until Capablanca, but he schooled him too. I think Lasker can only be compared to Morphy and Kasparov for domination of peers.

  • uh at 3:24 white needs to defend his E pawn... He can't do the normal NbC3 to defend it. What do you think is the best way to defend it?

  • If white castles and black knight takes on e4, then white would play d4, attacking the bishop. All of the variations after that are good for white. That's why it is ok for white to castle, rather than immediately defending the pawn.

  • That's correct massivation - thanks for sharing and checking out the vid!

  • also at 8:29 why does the rook move to c1?

  • what should black do if white takes the knight and is it ok to have the doubled pawns?

  • Thanks for posting!

  • what program is this?

  • your tutorial skills have become amazing!

  • you are the best chess video maker ever!!!

  • i had to use of deep fritz cd ,but this is much better

  • your videos kick ass. Thanks man

  • Excellent video, thanks.

  • hi jrobi sorry about commenting on an old video but in your series of ruy lopez's will u make the modern steinz defence and the worrall attack c73 and c86

  • why doesnt a3 pawn come down to pressure the bishop? Im noob and my friend uses that (hes noob too) but I just want to know

  • That's definitely a move that can be played, and I plan on covering it in future videos in this series. There are several possibilties from it. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • The position at 9:05 is astounding for white. Black has so little breathing space

  • lol killing the night... ^^¿

  • monekybutt, then black queen goes to G5 aiming at the knight on E5 and the G2 pawn. good players dont do what u said, puttz

  • how about killing the knight with bishop than taking the pawn??

  • I've had some success against this defense by playing a4 after castling with white like in the Evan's gambit. When Bxb4, c3, Bc5, d4 which helps in lending the long diagnol to the dark squared bishop to get extra support on the kingside attack and can catch the pawn on g7 if the opponent doesn't see d5

  • Thanks for posting your thoughts on those lines, and glad to hear you are experiencing success with it!

  • dear master, can make a video on the hippo defence?

  • heheh "dear master" =)

  • I really love your videos but it's rooey lopez, at least that's how you pronounce it.. I know I'm annoying but I can't resist

  • For some reason I can't get that into a sentence - not sure if it's my accent or what. I guess for me it's Ruy. I have heard both from different people.

  • I've tried this opening a few times but I always get the same response from blacks, after the Bb5 blacks plays a6, I go Ba4 and black plays b5, that puts my bishop in Bb3, what are my options from there? Didn't I just let the black develops their pawns and I lose terrain? Thanks! oh! by the way! great videos! 5 stars!

  • Yes and no. That is one of the most common answers you'll find against the Ruy. It's called the norwegian defence and in the end, white's pawn formation is messed up on the queenside (as in taking away the option to castle). And besides, it has led the bishop where it has wanted to go, on a large diagonal. This Defence is agressive but time-consuming.

Still, keep in mind that a6 is by far more common than Bc5, and it's called the morphy defence (divided in lots of line, check out wikipedia).

  • Thanks for the anwser, I've checked Wikipedia and saw all the possible variations for this opening.

  • i agree its really quite annoying.

    having to move your bishop.

how do you play well against it as black?

  • just asking for advice i mean i'm about to start playing what should i use like oppenings and other stuff?

  • You might want to look for :

-1.e4: italian game, russian game, spanish game, sicilian defence & caro-kann main lines.

    1.d4: queen's gambit

    1.c4: english opening

    1.nf3: king's indian attack

Gotta look the game from bith sides, keep that in mind ^^

  • Hey, I have a bizarre question... what if this happens in classical defence: 4. c3 Nf6 5. O-O Nxe4 ? I know it's not a common move but how does white get rid of that pesky knight at that point?
