The difference between horses and cows is that cows are raised primarily for food, while horses are primarily companion animals. It's been like that for a long time. I like to ride horses, and learn about them, but my interest in cows is on the grill. Cows just aren't as interesting as horses.
I feel all animals, insects, humans, dolphins, pigs, dogs, ants and all living organisms are all equal. (They all have brains, react to pain/emotions)- try to prove i'm wrong that any insect can feel pain just the same as any animal can (all living organisms have senses) therefore no animal should be left behind.
I am not against of killing animals I think it can be a very good thing keeping wild and domestic populations down. As long as it is done without putting the animal through abuse. I'm okay with it.

I rode horses as a girl. I use to jump and compete, and I retired my horses to a spot of family land where they spent the rest of their days grazing away and relaxing. @jrules85 It's way more humane to slaughter them here than in Mexico. the only problem people have with is is the fact that they see them as pet's and don't realize they are livestock animals. If someone looses a job and can't care for a horse the horse won't be fed, and rescues (though a noble idea) don't have enough money to take all the horses because they are non profit.

Unfortunately the BLM is leasing land designated as protected mustang land to cattle ranchers and large companies. the mustangs habitat is shrinking fast. also the BLM is reducing herd sizes drastically, so much in fact, that it is making many herds genetically inviable for continuation. i know and work with mustangs and i have yet to meet one that came directly off the range in poor body condition. it is not the mustangs that is the problem
@SombraWolf24 Have you been up to the mustang ranches in Rocksprings Wyoming? I know people that work with the mustangs trying to break them so they can be adopted out and they are running out of grazing ground and if they did not supplement them during the winter they would starve.
@1968maz i have not, however there are many herds in areas with plentiful forage that the mustangs are being taken off of due to cattle ranchers leasing the land. if there are areas that have starving mustangs then those horses need to be relocated or adopted out. every mustang herd is different and they deserve different handleing. many of the spanish stock mustangs are being "managed" into extincion, and it seems that other mustangs are being "managed" into starvation.

i can say the same about cows and chickens... i agree that now days slaughterhouses operate in an unethical way. If people live in a different way and eat horse meat its up to them.

I believe there are "horse slaughterhouses" in the works in a number of states as we speak. I don't eat horse meat, and have 7 rescued horses that I work my behind off to be able to afford to feed! That said, I choose not to screw with other cultures traditions. I'm sure we, you and I, do things that some races or cultures would frown on. Instead of threatening people, some of you would do better to try and do something productive regarding things like this.

So riddle me this! If the boarders where to shut down to the export of horses for slaughter what will happen to the unwanted horses? There are already thousands of horses that are starving and if we shut down the borders to 150,000 horses, HOLY SHIT famine. There is now way in hell that rescue groups are going to take in all those horses. Tax payers already pay for plenty of these horses, last year it was 37 million dollars for 40,000 animals in corrals and pastures. Slaughter Horses in the USA

WTF all horses have the natural ability to find water on their own their wiskers are used to find it, they all know to paw the ground in the winter for food and what to eat, and yes some of them will die that life, the weak die the strong survive thats how its supposed to be. a horse can travel miles wihtout food or water in the wild, if they cant keep up they die annd others live, LIFE

@jrules85 its worked for many a horse the ranchers set free with wild horse herds and then capture them again later to avoid feed costs, its also worked for the hundred of dogs that are dumped on our land each year, un catchable, but they have all lived that ive seen

@jrules85 i went out to the mustang ranges in nevada/arizona, there was literally no end to the mountains and huge ranges they had, they have plenty of room, but the government is renting it to farms, if anything stop the retarded government from starting crap, theyd be fine, if they ogvernment would stop being stupid

@jrules85 It's way more humane to slaughter them here than in Mexico. the only problem people have with is is the fact that they see them as pet's and don't realize they are livestock animals. If someone looses a job and can't care for a horse the horse won't be fed, and rescues (though a noble idea) don't have enough money to take all the horses because they are non profit.

@jrules85 oh i agree, and i'm glad the bills just been signed to reopen it. the photos that people take of the horses that are really skinny, or on the ground are usually at the homes of the people who couldn't care for them, not at the slaughter house.

And now there are 300000 thousand starving horses in the united states because of the shutting down of slaughter houses for horses. And now the wild mustangs are taking over the country side and destroying large amounts of land that feed them and they are starving also because now we can not control the numbers because the slaughter houses are closed down. I don't eat horse meat and don't know anyone that does but how are we suppose to get the numbers down???

@1968maz you are mistaken about the mustangs starving. Unfortunately the BLM is leasing land designated as protected mustang land to cattle ranchers and large companies. the mustangs habitat is shrinking fast. also the BLM is reducing herd sizes drastically, so much in fact, that it is making many herds genetically inviable for continuation. i know and work with mustangs and i have yet to meet one that came directly off the range in poor body condition. it is not the mustangs that is the problem

@SombraWolf24 Have you been up to the mustang ranches in Rocksprings Wyoming? I know people that work with the mustangs trying to break them so they can be adopted out and they are running out of grazing ground and if they did not supplement them during the winter they would starve.

@1968maz i have not, however there are many herds in areas with plentiful forage that the mustangs are being taken off of due to cattle ranchers leasing the land. if there are areas that have starving mustangs then those horses need to be relocated or adopted out. every mustang herd is different and they deserve different handleing. many of the spanish stock mustangs are being "managed" into extincion, and it seems that other mustangs are being "managed" into starvation.

Part of the US soloution would be to have slaughter houses in each state. This would prevent the long distance travel.
The captive bolt KILLS the horse, instantly, but the horse moves when it hits the floor. I have seen this with my own that was put down.
I ask what would be your answer to the problem, horses without a home because of whatever reason, and not enough homes for them?

There just NO HUMUN way to put down a Horse, in these slaughter hell-holes. NO! Horses are not cattle, they have a different position of brain compared to cattle. They are FLIGHT animals & panic easily. Making the shooter miss their shot using a simple cailber "22" in canada. Now, YOU tell me if ALL horses are shot just once in the forehead? Videos prove that mutiple shots are sometimes needed. AH! EUTHANIZE Horses at home with a licenced VET is how it should be done. NO selling of TOXIC meat!

So sweetie, do you really think that the breeders, dealers and race horse owners are going to stop sending their horses for slaughter when all the legal plants are closed? No, they will put horses on ships and slaughter them at sea where no jurisdiction can govern them... What we actually need to do is create MORE well run and monitored slaughterhouses so that horses are not having to travel such long distances.
