  • Yeah...the drummer's mic needs to be dialed down a few notches.

  • IT's amazing that she looks/sounds just the same now as back then ;)

  • That drummer is so bad hahaha. Great song though.

  • Than God you're not (marketable) to the mainstream music industry ( only because they can't buy you. I'm a songwriter singer too. and have loved you for more than 20 years, can't believe it's been that long!!! A song is suppose to evoke an emotion or feeling, A great record does the same thing. I wont buy a record for a single most times I buy it in spite of the single...My point is I think each one of your song is like one of your kids and each record you leave a piece of your soul in it!

  • @hiddentreasure73 hate to break it to you mate but youtube search Why Can't I?

  • I love you liz and your music, you have a tremendous amount of talent with a lot hook and magic in your songs.

  • wow, I used to dress like her in the early to mid 90s, so long ago. Black tights went with everything lol

  • Wow, amazing level of hostility toward the drummer's harmony vocal. Not as good as her own double-tracked on the studio, but it has a nice low-fi feel to it. And, no, the studio version is not "useless" in comparison, it's still definitive.

  • that guy ruins it cuz she's amazing by herself

  • There went my virginity...

  • i hate liz phair (pretentious midwest Chicago idiot who went to Oberlin pffffffsht) beyond all hate

    for almost 20 years now

but this is one of the greatest live-Tv performances i have ever seen in my whole life (and same as the first time i saw/heard it , when i taped it off MTV in real time the night it aired). it's the entire history of the world right on tape w/one song, it's beyod awesome (and a graet song, in this version/performance). the album version is useless in comparison.

  • @mikeinoakland . This is not that good. Go get some professional help. This performance would not change anytihing anywhere.

  • The backing vocal did make me laugh. Thanks for posting this.

  • please piss in my face LIZZY !

  • the drummer needs to have a big cup of "shut the fuck up"

  • @panzercam yeah, seriously, why the FOOK is he opening his pie hole and demolishing the world???!!

  • @panzercam He's probably just the best background vocalist of the three guys playing with her. The song has background vocals.

  • @panzercam

    that's fucking hilarious!

  • yeah! mucho bueno. gracias.

  • I want Liz Phair to sit on my face.

  • Ewwwwwwww!!!!!!

  • shes a tiny petite woman

  • A little late at :05

  • love this track. classic record.

  • man i heard these last time i was 16 brings great memorys back

  • Just wanted to add...a lot of people say Liz is a sellout and they couldn't be more wrong about that.

    1) Real artists aren't afraid to try new things.

    2) If it wasn't for "Why Can't I", then I STILL wouldn't know who the fuck she is. Nor would I be able to call Whip-Smart one of the greatest albums ever written.

  • Has Liz Phair retired from the music business?

  • @RLW1967

    no, but she should

  • i feel sorry for ppl who can't enjoy music unless a singer has perfect pitch control all the time. you'd miss out on a lot of the best rock music out there

  • THIS.

I couldn't have said it better. I first started listening to Liz when I was 14 (7 years ago) and I just feel in love with her voice.

The only way I ever found out about her was because of "Why Can't I". It was a terrible, catchy dorky pop song, but her voice was awesome! Then I bought Exile...and I was just like WTF this is waaay better.

Then, I bought Whip-smart and I was like WTFF this is good shit! lol

    So yeah, I love Liz.

  • Liz Phair= fantastic. Brad Wood is a great producer, he did a couple of Phair's records and i think American Thighs by Veruca Salt.

  • and don't forget Placebo's first album =]

  • the drummer must not sing!!!

  • or at least tone it down a little.

  • I think he's good.... really.

  • His mic is too loud, that's all.

  • @madeyes4u Very.

  • Shes such a great guitar player, her style on "guyville" and the Girlysound tapes is really cool. Thanks for posting this piece of music history!

  • Next to Tina Turner, the greatest female voice in R&R!!!!!

  • You are high.

  • fuck off and die..

  • @Soul74 yet, what i'm surprised you don't realize, is that both of the aforemetioned artists (and many others in the same, and similar genres) purposely made their voices sound that way to fit the very music they were playing. it's that "freedom of expression" aspect that lends itself to the mere creation of musical genres. and even if this weren't true, who the fuck cares? there're are about 5.3658 jillion bands/musicians out there. they are what they are.

  • @wirsindhelden0 You're free to think what you want. Good luck with that.

  • @Soul74 hey, thanks!!! although, i don't see what luck has to do with thinking the way i want....that kind of just happens on its own, you see.

  • thanks - I just did.

  • I don't think Brad's bad at singing, his vocals are just too loud in this mix. Mic problems, maybe?

  • And that was only the beginning, things evened out by the end.

  • I worship this woman.

  • @lissak27 I'm a huge death metal fan but I LOVE Liz!!! Ever since I was 16 (I'm 32)

  • i like this version! Liz sounds so good here!

  • that guitar looks soo huge in her hands :))

  • @horcica22 It's not the size of the guitar, it's the way you use it Lol

  • @madeyes4u I've got something that's 6' 1" that she could use.

  • @horcica22 Now try not to picture what else would be enormous in her hands.

  • All you drummer singing haters "Eat It". Brad Wood believed and helped Liz Phair before you even knew how to turn on a radio. Appreciate a different version for what it is.

  • Vintage Liz...This is soooo cool. Thanks for posting.

  • IS THAT AN OVATION

  • I hope they fired the drummer after that one

  • she's a dirty girl

  • This is hands-down the greatest live performance I've seen of hers. She often has troubles with her vocal due to her stage fright, but she's spot-on here.

  • Whoah! Crazy guitar moves at 1:28. Seriously, that's impressive, and all the more reason to respect her as a songwriter and performer.

  • The drummer needs to shut his mouth!

  • Every time that I drop by to watch this... I wish that his mic would have just gone dead.

  • Man I'd like to smack whoever did the mixing on this the drummer is overiding Liz big time Liz actually was doing a good job rocking it out

  • totally agree, he should get hes ass kicked:P

  • lol, thats the first thing I thought. That drummer sucks ass at singing

  • Yeah, but so does Liz. It's part of the charm of her music.

  • Ironically, the drummer (Brad Wood) mixed the original album.

  • oh wow the vocal balance is way bad. he shouldn't be so loud, yikes! love it though.

  • Vocals, Guitar - Liz Phair

    Vocals, Drums - Brad Wood

    Guitar - Casey Rice

    Bass- not Leroy

  • not relly wcse tho... he was kinda left out

  • thats brad wood! the man who is responsible for helping produce liz's first 3 records

  • My God, she is so fantastic AND why won't that guy on the 2-piece shut up?!

  • Awesome, thank you. :)
