Than God you're not (marketable) to the mainstream music industry ( only because they can't buy you. I'm a songwriter singer too. and have loved you for more than 20 years, can't believe it's been that long!!! A song is suppose to evoke an emotion or feeling, A great record does the same thing. I wont buy a record for a single most times I buy it in spite of the single...My point is I think each one of your song is like one of your kids and each record you leave a piece of your soul in it!
Wow, amazing level of hostility toward the drummer's harmony vocal. Not as good as her own double-tracked on the studio, but it has a nice low-fi feel to it. And, no, the studio version is not "useless" in comparison, it's still definitive.
i hate liz phair (pretentious midwest Chicago idiot who went to Oberlin pffffffsht) beyond all hate
for almost 20 years now
but this is one of the greatest live-Tv performances i have ever seen in my whole life (and same as the first time i saw/heard it , when i taped it off MTV in real time the night it aired). it's the entire history of the world right on tape w/one song, it's beyod awesome (and a graet song, in this version/performance). the album version is useless in comparison.
Just wanted to add...a lot of people say Liz is a sellout and they couldn't be more wrong about that.
1) Real artists aren't afraid to try new things.
2) If it wasn't for "Why Can't I", then I STILL wouldn't know who the fuck she is. Nor would I be able to call Whip-Smart one of the greatest albums ever written.
i feel sorry for ppl who can't enjoy music unless a singer has perfect pitch control all the time. you'd miss out on a lot of the best rock music out there
I couldn't have said it better. I first started listening to Liz when I was 14 (7 years ago) and I just feel in love with her voice.
The only way I ever found out about her was because of "Why Can't I". It was a terrible, catchy dorky pop song, but her voice was awesome! Then I bought Exile...and I was just like WTF this is waaay better.
Then, I bought Whip-smart and I was like WTFF this is good shit! lol

I have yet to hear a live performance by Phair that was even close to passable. She came in through the "anybody can do it" door opened by Kurt Cobain.
@Soul74 yet, what i'm surprised you don't realize, is that both of the aforemetioned artists (and many others in the same, and similar genres) purposely made their voices sound that way to fit the very music they were playing. it's that "freedom of expression" aspect that lends itself to the mere creation of musical genres. and even if this weren't true, who the fuck cares? there're are about 5.3658 jillion bands/musicians out there. they are what they are.

lol Some people don't know the diff between a voice crack and an inflection. duh, It's a slow vibrato, something along the lines of a yodel. Singers use them all the time, especially in country. They sound great. stfu
All you drummer singing haters "Eat It". Brad Wood believed and helped Liz Phair before you even knew how to turn on a radio. Appreciate a different version for what it is.
This is hands-down the greatest live performance I've seen of hers. She often has troubles with her vocal due to her stage fright, but she's spot-on here.
Yeah...the drummer's mic needs to be dialed down a few notches.
