Because, technically, "football" can refer also to "rugby football" (i.e., rugby) "Australian football", "Gaelic football" and other sports. I think we did just call it football though, until American football became more popular. "Soccer" I think come from an abreviation of "Association football".

Americans played all the popular sports of the time that were played in the rest of th Empire. Cricket was George Washingtons favorite sport and there were teams across the country until Baseball took over in popularity.
As for the term soccer, you go to the UK and you will see some places advertising there 'soccer' equiptment and pubs advertising 'soccer' times.
Our seats were just above and to the left from where this was filmed. This game and v Italy in K-town, were the greatest sporting events I've ever attended. And that includes some serious SEC Football, LSU, Bama, UGA et cetera.
The Ghana fans were great, we took more than a few pictures with them in their 'Black Star' shirts.
As for the game, unfortunately it was decided by a poor ref call. The Ghana player took a dive and was rewared the game decided PK. The US the better team IMO.
