Yeah, it's hard to see all 4 in the video, but they were definitely there - one normal outer bow and the triple inner bow. And yes, I believe that God invented rainbows!
A supernumerary rainbow—also known as a stacker rainbow—is an infrequent phenomenon, consisting of several faint rainbows on the inner side of the primary rainbow, and very rarely also outside the secondary rainbow. Supernumerary rainbows are slightly detached and have pastel colour bands that do not fit the usual pattern. It is not possible to explain their existence using classical geometric optics. (Copied from Wikipedia)
They're called Supernumerary Bands, it's fairly common.
The rain drops create supernumerary bands via Interference of Light. Sir Isaac Newton first explained it in 1717 (see Newton's Rings). Same phenomena causes the rainbow colors of soap bubbles.
I'd have to explain quantum mechanics and the wave nature of light to explain interference fully, anyways look up the website - Atoptics Supernumerary Bow Formation
I posted a video of what I called a “quadruple rainbow” which was a double rainbow with a triple spectrum in one of the bows. Almost immediately after I posted it, I started getting comments about “what would Double Rainbow Guy think of this", etc. I didn’t think it was that important until finally somebody told me how to find your video and I finally saw it.
I think your reaction was great and should be our reaction to all of nature.
I have a video of one of these amazing things `sun halo~ over new york city on March 30 2011. Please have a look and tell us what you think it is ? Thanks. ~Bryan
I just saw this phenomenon in Big Sky Montana. Three inner optical spectrums, and one outer optical spectrum. At one point I thought I counted 4 inner optical spectrums, but I'll just say I saw 3 for sure. I took still shots of it, but after seeing your video, I wish I had made a video recording too. Great job! Thanks for posting this, Bro!
@ItsVideos Thanks very much for sharing your sighting! Yours is the first account of someone seeing exactly the same thing. Can you post the your pictures somewhere? Perhaps you could post them on Shutterfly, Snapfish, etc. and post the link here in the comment section so anyone could see them. Thanks again!
@wdehuff I have since learned that the accepted term is "supernumerary rainbow". If you google that, you will find all kinds of wonderful information and photos. I read some of the scientific information about it. The effect cannot be explained by simple geometric optics. You have to take into account the interference patterns caused by the wave nature of light. So actually there can be quintuple rainbows, sextuple rainbows, ..., depending on characteristics like droplet size and uniformity.
@ItsVideos Judging from the scientific information you referred to, perhaps there is theoretically no limit to the number of spectrums that could be manifested. I think if you thought you saw a fifth spectrum, there must have been something there . . .
Would you people (mostly Christians) STOP basing EVERYTHING on somebody who DOES NOT exist. HAVE YOU EVER even met this FAIRY TALE CREATURE? Jeez, it is really upsetting me that everyone is really putting their entire life on this "God" who really DOES NOT exist.
@AkeelahCross I take it from your tone that you are not actually trying to convince anyone of your position but are just "venting" so to speak. If you ever do decide to try to persuade anyone that your position is true, treating them with a little respect is a good way to start.
@wdehuff Mmmmm, yeah I'm not trying to make anybody believe what I do. I'm just tired off seeing people base an entire comment section on "God" or another topic, I'm only saying God because of the top on this video's comment section. when obviously this is just a rainbow video. So I got a little overwhelmed and said something, which I should not have, and it's not just God I'm complaining about... Like in a video with bunnies hopping around, critics make it about animal abuse. IT SICKENS ME.
@AkeelahCross Hi, well, in that case, no hard feelings. I would just say that there is a lot "out there" that we can get upset about, especially in this day and age, so we have to be careful what we let get to us. One of my favorite sayings was told to me by an old woman in Hawaii - it's not from the Bible but very wise, that "All the water in the world can't sink a ship, as long as you don't let it get inside."
@AkeelahCross Who's to say God does, or doesn't, exist. I don't believe people should only see things one way. I see it as that God may, or may not exist, and I accept that fact even though I'm a religious person :)
@JohnLeaf64 Well, I'm not really atheist... I'm agnostic and sometimes I seem like it when "God" believers rant and try to tell everyone about his greatness... Yeah, sorry.
omg, double double rainbow. Woah! It's starting to look like a triple tripple rainbow. six times rainbow in my front yard. Double double rainbow all the way across the sky. What does it mean?
@Hududding It sounds like you have the record. Do you mean two separate triple rainbows (3 spectrums in each rainbow?) For a total of 6 spectrums? Why not???
Yes, the bows were complete and although it's hard to see in the video, the lower bow had three complete spectrums. I think this is beyond the rainbow that Noah saw!
@MIKEDURSTEWITZ Mike, I'm just curious. Why did you stop believing in God? When you see things like rainbows and all the other amazing things in the universe, doesn't it make you think that there is an intelligence behind them?
@wdehuff Because the 'amazing' things are all random If there is a God (however you would want to define that), what kind of intelligence made it? If you can say that God has always been eternal, why couldn't you apply that same logic to a cyclical multiverse?
@tweekin001 I take it by your use of quotation marks that you really do not find anything truly amazing about the universe. If that is the case, then I feel sorry for you. The existence of God is not something that can be argued. It is a matter of the heart. The Bible says that when atheists stand before God that they will be without excuse because they should have seen from nature that He existed.
thats only if you believe god and the universe is one and the same, and that there is only one universe. M theory would beg to differ with you. I believe in god and realize science is just the understanding of the physical world. but if you wanna argue god with science, you better be prepared for scientific rebuttals. science cant disprove god nor prove him, its paradoxical because the scientific method, by definition, cannot probe a supersystem or the metaphysical.

Thanks - and thanks for sharing about the pillar rainbows - I'm hoping to see those someday. Nature is so amazing - there's so much we all haven't seen yet.
its funny that i saw one like this just yesterday, it had the inner bown the inner inner bow and the outer bow but it was only the parts that reach the ground, it followed us all the way home and when i got home its was almost touchable... nature is so very amazing and wonderous, so much to experience :), in our native language there are many names for a rainbow, each name for a different type of rainbow:)
My language is Maori.. Kahukura is the double rainbow, Uenuku is the single bow, Te Rangi Tu Aniwaniwa is the standing pillar rainbow Tawhana is the hanging/floating rainbow, there are other names but i havent learned them yet :)
Thanks for the Maori names of the different rainbows. That is a cool sounding language. Sorry it took me so long to reply - I wanted to do a little research about the Maori. You are a very interesting group of people. I understand that many football teams are using the Maori chants to prepare for games. You guys in the South Pacific are really on the cutting edge!
Thanks for sharing this and being lucky enough to videotape. Those who think the third and fourth bows are halos, No, this is a true Quadruple Rainbow. How do you tell? It is opposite the sun, and all the supernumeraries are visible and they are full bows. The quad described facing the suns are halos. (They are nice too) I had the opportunity to see a quad rainbow once and as good as this video is, to see it above you is outstanding! Suggest Reading book rainbows: Color and light in Nature
Thanks very much for your informative comments on the rainbow. It's nice to know that it's a true quadruple one. It's also nice to know that someone else has seen one. I'll also definitely read the book you recommended.
Man, you are not right, even i was confused when I saw that first, this is not supernumeraires, but rare twinned rainbow !!! Look closely and you will see the "supernumerary" as you said is very similiar to the normal rainbow. And the "supernumerary" has only 1 arc. It is twinned rainbow !!!
To see the real quad rainbow, turn to the sun, and shield your eyes from the sun, or block the shine from behind a building, and search carefully.
Like I have said, the real quadruple bow is rare, because of the sun, and it takes patience to find it. I looked for over five minutes to find it, and rain must be in the direction of the sun, also. This is rare, so don't expect to see the higher order bows everytime it rains out - I was lucky.
It sounds like what you saw was a solar halo. Rainbows form on the opposite side of the sun. Solar halo are quite common; you just have to know when and where to look. You can get more info on halos on google. I could be wrong but it sounds like from your description that it was a halo you are describing.
By the way, the tertiary rainbow is situated around the sun, and I have seen this, and this is the third rainbow, and it has the same order color as the primary bow, except the tertairy is wider.
The real quadruple rainbow is right above the tertiary rainbow, with the colors reversed, and the real quad bow is situated around the sun, right above the tertairy, and I have seen these. They are rare though, because of the brightness of the sun - but they are there.
I have seen a real quadruple rainbow, and it is situated around the sun as a dim pulsating arc, and it rather rare, because of the bright sun, but I have seen it.
Higher order bows are rare, but I have seen the tertiary, and quad rainbow right around the sun, and it is rare. This is not the real McCoy quad rainbow.......it is around the sun, above the teritary.
These extra spectrums are called supernumeraries. These form when there is extra refraction in the first bow causing these repeating spectrums to form. Usually, they occur in reverse color order, but these must have been complete refractions. Very nice.
As far as I've been able to find, and it might be in one of these posts, it cannot be explained with the presently known laws of physics.

I did my research, and I did see a REAL quad rainbow, and the REAL tertiary rainbow.......it wasn't a solar halo.
Solar halos occur when ice crystals are high altitude. It was raining out in the direction of the sun when I spotted these rare rainbows.
Look up Tertiary Rainbows, and how they are formed. Just type in Tertiary rainbow. They do exist, although rare - but I have seen them.

Thanks very much for your informative comments on the rainbow. It's nice to know that it's a true quadruple one. It's also nice to know that someone else has seen one. I'll also definitely read the book you recommended.
Thanks again,

Dear KAMIKAZR,
Thanks for your comments about the different rainbows. I'll look for the "real" quadruple rainbow the next time I see a rainbow.
Happy new year,

Very nice.

Beautiful! Thank you for taking the time to enhance the video to make the colors more visible.
