I have one just like her " Sun Joe" splits mesquite wood just fine but it has trouble splitting seasoned oak .

I have one of these and a gas powered one. These machines are pretty safe.  You could put a 12 year-old to work with one and unless the kid is some kind of milhouse van houten should be able to operate them without losing an eye.

That is the spliting wedge and you split the wood not cut it.

You cut the wood into rounds with a chain saw.
