I saw this at Eggleston's exhibit at the Corcoran Gallery in DC. I think the description is inaccurate here. Wasn't it filmed in Canton, Mississippi? Hence the title...
If there was any famous photographer that I had the opportunity to meet, it would be William Eggleston. He's quite unique. Maybe one day while in Memphis....
Thank you, cinetic, for posting this important work. For a great 'behind the scenes' look at this film and some of it's larger than life characters, check out 'It Came from Memphis' by Robert Gordon. And to those of you who 'don't get it' or are 'confused' I can only say this- That thing in your hand (not that hand) is called a 'mouse'. Use it to click to something more on your level! Cheers
How can some people not even be captivated by the simplicity of the scenes! These must be folk who are bored with their own lives, a moment of silence to them is something which needs to be filled with some screen or noise or movement, learn to enjoy the true beauty of just being and then give it time x
Very interesting. It is like a glimps into what everyday life was like, kinda cool... it does somewhat drone on sometimes but, strangly I like it. Kinda like a time capsule. Yes and everyone on youtube is used to getting their FIX in 3 mins or less, rush, rush, rush lets see the punch line already ie. a whack to the nuts or the kid who jumps a shopping cart into a bush ect... Does Lady Russelle remind anyone else of Robin Williams in a weird freaky way? lol
I am stunned this is on youtube. I do love Eggleston, grew up in Louisiana in the 70's, and have a high tolerance for obscure 'video art'. But, quaaludes, huh? The drugged rants do get a bit tedious after a while...
I hate to admit, this was entertaining, in a very strange way. I was only 5 years old when these scenes were filmed, but I remember many things of 1973-74, and brought back the times of remembering my dad in that time period
boy u guys did alot of drugs in the 70's!!hahahahaha ludes!!! too funny! its the same shit now. just different drugs!!! i absolutly love your work!! i actually do the same with my video camera! i record ANYTHING! i started doin it in the early 90's.... and whoever the 2 girls were at 27:00 and 28:00 are gorgeous!!! didnt know women in the 70's were this HOT!
im 32 years old.....and i think this video is EXCELLENT!!! 5 stars! .... simple everyday life through mr. eggleston's eyes! in the 70's..... (u have to be in to this kinda raw, real video stuff to get it) .... but i think its excellent.... peace be to johnny woods!!!!!!!! bad ass!
i was about to turn it off, but it kinda grew on me. As a northerner now living in so Cal, i'm luxuriating in the accents. how lyrical the accents, how poetic the language, even when they're fussin and fightin and talkin nonsense, it's beautifully resonant. the music of course is gorgeous. gorgeous.
This movie came out great! I love it!! Seeing all of these people at the height of their lives is wonderful. Those were the days!!! Bill, I will always love you!! Marcia
always amazing.....a great photographer who can do both B & W and color, still and video.....this series is one of my faves along with Bob Gruen's "All dolled up" (also on sony porta-pac using infra red.......)
Having seen this twice in cinema screenings, both times with a packed audience, I'm really looking forward to watching it again at leisure, at home. The Jerry McGill/Jim Dickinson scenes are worth the price of admission by themselves.
I can only imagine. Knowing him by reputation, and Jim in reality, the thought of the two of them together is beyond imagination. I'm just glad this film exists as some kind of record.
I've seen movies of this sort befor. They have never interested me. I was just checking it out to see what it is. I like that is more in depth and along a more spicific structure. But for those who do like the movie: "to each person there is their own taste" nothing wrong with that, more power to you.
Does anybody else dig that song they're all singing at the end, "Love is For the Asking"? Somebody please dig the YANCEY album up and upload the song.
Johnny woods is the most inspirational vocal/harmonics f-n evaAaaaaaaaaaaaaa....i hope some day he may grace my prescience.....Just so you know it is not worth watching after the skin flutter...and i am not talking about the gay guy.
At first...I did make a comment that reflected my confusion in all this. HOWEVER, I must say now, that this IS art. Some don't understand, but it captures the essence of time and culture. It focuses on real people and moments surrounding unscripted events that are now gone forever. It also captured objects, things, etc...kind of like a historical masterpiece.
lol after reading these comments, apparently i'm not the only one that feels that way! XD hahaha that's great... and a dude listening to drunk people ramble isn't art. if i wanted to to see that, i'd buy the bums downtown a bottle of whiskey and hang out with them. this didn't take any skill or any creative though other than "let me record some drunk people with a black and white lense... yes... that will be good." lame.
OK. ALL THE TEENAGE IDIOTS BAD MOUTHING THIS PIECE PLEASE GO WATCH YOUR HOLLYWOOD ACTION PACKED SPECIAL EFFECTS MOVIES STARRING VIN DIESAL BECAUSE THIS KIND OF ART IS WAAAAAY ABOVE YOUR HEAD. hey yo ur the one who needs to lay down i think anyone with a mind would want to watch an action packed hollywood movie over this. whoever disagrees honestly needs a life..
Ummm....I think for the first time in my life im actually speechless....this is horrible, my IQ dropped a few points after I watched this....everyone who has watched this is now retarded...

So much for the noble savage. This is humanity, raw, stark and left to itself.
I used to hang with this kind of crowd. It is much worse than it looks here.
I wonder why some people go deeper into this life of despair. It is the natural fate of man, in an entropic world, to decay to the point where he no longer remembers what honor or decency are.
Those that believe they are above this are mistaken. It is none the less, repulsive to those who have escaped, and it fascinates the cloistered.

A few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand;sorry i didnt want that happening to me
The reason this looks so good is that a purely black and white signal has tons of bandwidth unto itself. In NTSC color, a portion of the signal is allocated. This results in less detail and blotchy color. VHS would suck far less if recorded with a black and white camera. But that is all in the past. DV cameras cost less than $200 now!
