  • I Saw the King..What a rare Concert it is...

  • The narrator sounds like William S. Burroughs.

  • Wow, how did I find this? Fantastic movie. I knew I'd love it right from the opening scene with the two kids.

  • I saw this at Eggleston's exhibit at the Corcoran Gallery in DC. I think the description is inaccurate here. Wasn't it filmed in Canton, Mississippi? Hence the title...

  • @anth3r there are some scenes from the Peabody and Newby's in Memphis.

  • If there was any famous photographer that I had the opportunity to meet, it would be William Eggleston. He's quite unique. Maybe one day while in Memphis....

  • brilliant!

  • Thank you, cinetic, for posting this important work. For a great 'behind the scenes' look at this film and some of it's larger than life characters, check out 'It Came from Memphis' by Robert Gordon. And to those of you who 'don't get it' or are 'confused' I can only say this- That thing in your hand (not that hand) is called a 'mouse'. Use it to click to something more on your level! Cheers

  • its like Gummo only real people.

  • How can some people not even be captivated by the simplicity of the scenes! These must be folk who are bored with their own lives, a moment of silence to them is something which needs to be filled with some screen or noise or movement, learn to enjoy the true beauty of just being and then give it time x

  • Check out my Movies Playlist for all the movies on Youtube....Enjoy!!

  • your are an idiot...

  • Unibrow around 10:45. This video is really great, no shit.

  • Very interesting. It is like a glimps into what everyday life was like, kinda cool... it does somewhat drone on sometimes but, strangly I like it. Kinda like a time capsule. Yes and everyone on youtube is used to getting their FIX in 3 mins or less, rush, rush, rush lets see the punch line already ie. a whack to the nuts or the kid who jumps a shopping cart into a bush ect... Does Lady Russelle remind anyone else of Robin Williams in a weird freaky way? lol

  • I am stunned this is on youtube. I do love Eggleston, grew up in Louisiana in the 70's, and have a high tolerance for obscure 'video art'. But, quaaludes, huh? The drugged rants do get a bit tedious after a while...

  • This is a glimpse of Southern Life through the eyes of the camera. It is a captivating work, and a record of history.

  • I hate to admit, this was entertaining, in a very strange way. I was only 5 years old when these scenes were filmed, but I remember many things of 1973-74, and brought back the times of remembering my dad in that time period

  • 28:28 HOT!! wonder what she looks like now!!!!!!

  • boy u guys did alot of drugs in the 70's!!hahahahaha ludes!!! too funny! its the same shit now. just different drugs!!! i absolutly love your work!! i actually do the same with my video camera! i record ANYTHING! i started doin it in the early 90's.... and whoever the 2 girls were at 27:00 and 28:00 are gorgeous!!! didnt know women in the 70's were this HOT!

  • You are an idiot,get a clue.

  • why am i an idiot???????? and why do i need to get a clue?

  • im 32 years old.....and i think this video is EXCELLENT!!! 5 stars! .... simple everyday life through mr. eggleston's eyes! in the 70's..... (u have to be in to this kinda raw, real video stuff to get it) .... but i think its excellent.... peace be to johnny woods!!!!!!!! bad ass!

  • i like this film but why is everything done as a close up?

  • nice very nice

  • Yeah, I made it to about 8 minutes. Since I was a teen during the period, I thought it might at least be nostalgic, ...not worth any more of my time.

  • title is misleading

  • i was about to turn it off, but it kinda grew on me. As a northerner now living in so Cal, i'm luxuriating in the accents. how lyrical the accents, how poetic the language, even when they're fussin and fightin and talkin nonsense, it's beautifully resonant. the music of course is gorgeous. gorgeous.

  • goot

  • Absolutely terrific.. Bravo!

And now i'm going to order the DVD

  • This movie came out great! I love it!! Seeing all of these people at the height of their lives is wonderful. Those were the days!!! Bill, I will always love you!! Marcia

  • boo

  • hahahahah what's this?i don't get it...please i need an explication!!!!! :D

  • if you wait until about 2.40 he explains himself. Must be patient and have an attention span longer than 30 seconds

  • Duh, wuts dis all about? uh huh huh

  • WTF? I do'nt get it.

  • always amazing.....a great photographer who can do both B & W and color, still and video.....this series is one of my faves along with Bob Gruen's "All dolled up" (also on sony porta-pac using infra red.......)

  • I don't get it. What is the poinnt of the video?

  • What the hell is this crap ?

    0 stars.

  • i agree it is freaking retarded!!!! there is no point to it!! its so stupid!!

  • Having seen this twice in cinema screenings, both times with a packed audience, I'm really looking forward to watching it again at leisure, at home. The Jerry McGill/Jim Dickinson scenes are worth the price of admission by themselves.

  • As someone who knew Jerry before all this happened---the Jerry / Jim scenes are heartbreaking.

  • I can only imagine. Knowing him by reputation, and Jim in reality, the thought of the two of them together is beyond imagination. I'm just glad this film exists as some kind of record.

  • Thanks so much for posting this

i never thought i would see it

and i see i can purchase it as well

    thanks

  • I've seen movies of this sort befor. They have never interested me. I was just checking it out to see what it is. I like that is more in depth and along a more spicific structure. But for those who do like the movie: "to each person there is their own taste" nothing wrong with that, more power to you.

  • this is now and forever going to be one of my top ten films. It is home movies, yes. But home movies that capture eternity.

  • woah I love this

  • Does anybody else dig that song they're all singing at the end, "Love is For the Asking"? Somebody please dig the YANCEY album up and upload the song.

  • Johnny woods is the most inspirational vocal/harmonics f-n evaAaaaaaaaaaaaaa....i hope some day he may grace my prescience.....Just so you know it is not worth watching after the skin flutter...and i am not talking about the gay guy.

  • Johnny woods is the greatest singer and harmonica player and i hope that i might be able to grace his presence ........

  • interesting

  • OWNAGE.

  • At first...I did make a comment that reflected my confusion in all this. HOWEVER, I must say now, that this IS art. Some don't understand, but it captures the essence of time and culture. It focuses on real people and moments surrounding unscripted events that are now gone forever. It also captured objects, things, etc...kind of like a historical masterpiece.

  • THIS WAS ONEastonishing film

  • How do people upload tv shows and they&TBPSQUOre so crystal clear? That always made me wonder. haha

  • what? go play halo that is right lol

  • lol after reading these comments, apparently i'm not the only one that feels that way! XD hahaha that's great... and a dude listening to drunk people ramble isn't art. if i wanted to to see that, i'd buy the bums downtown a bottle of whiskey and hang out with them. this didn't take any skill or any creative though other than "let me record some drunk people with a black and white lense... yes... that will be good." lame.

  • lame... i feel dumber after watching that. thanks buddy. thanks.

  • this is the very begining of what we all now take for granted with youtube

  • Sorry dude....I have culture dripping out my ears....but this is just....hemmm, not sure what it is!

  • that would describe most of Eggelston's work.

  • OK. ALL THE TEENAGE IDIOTS BAD MOUTHING THIS PIECE PLEASE GO WATCH YOUR HOLLYWOOD ACTION PACKED SPECIAL EFFECTS MOVIES STARRING VIN DIESAL BECAUSE THIS KIND OF ART IS WAAAAAY ABOVE YOUR HEAD. YOU HAVE KNOW IDEA WHAT YOUR FUCKING TALKING ABOUT. GO AWAY AND GO WATCH YOUR FUNNY LITTLE ANIMAL VIDS WHERE THEY BARK FUNNY AND GET 3 MILLION HITS. YOUR GENERATION HAS NO FUCKING CULTURE!!!!cfodse14, please go drown your self.very original.i just got a little dumber watching this..ha ha ha. your IQ is 4

  • hey yo ur the one who needs to lay down i think anyone with a mind would want to watch an action packed hollywood movie over this. whoever disagrees honestly needs a life..

  • go play halo.

  • ya know thats a great idea thanks!

  • jajajajaj buy the dvd wtf!!! man i dont really sure that someone saw this movie complete yet and u want us to buy ur fucking dvd !!!!!

  • this makes no sence

  • beautiful. it's like a southern 'grey gardens'.

  • Amazing document and a beautiful piece... not bad for a broke-dick photographer.

  • Ummm....I think for the first time in my life im actually speechless....this is horrible, my IQ dropped a few points after I watched this....everyone who has watched this is now retarded...

    YOU'RE SICK....

  • and ur stupid

  • ha that um i really dnt knw wat to say .... IT SUCKS!!!!!

  • brilliant,

  • So far...this is reminding me of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and I'm only 17 min in the film...haha.

  • i am 100% sure that NO ONE will actually watch this for an hour and 17 min... NO ONE!!!

  • your wrong. i will. film makers will watch it. people with culture. people tired of mainstream hollywood. people tired of computer animated movies. this is above you my friend. go lay down please.

  • In other words, pretentious pricks like yourself will watch this all the way through.

  • yes it did!!!!

  • So much for the noble savage. This is humanity, raw, stark and left to itself.

I used to hang with this kind of crowd. It is much worse than it looks here.

I wonder why some people go deeper into this life of despair. It is the natural fate of man, in an entropic world, to decay to the point where he no longer remembers what honor or decency are.

Those that believe they are above this are mistaken. It is none the less, repulsive to those who have escaped, and it fascinates the cloistered.

  • omg, the guy at the 1:00 (1 hour) mark is like a living anti-drug campaign

  • You got that right. Stoned, wasted, and stupid: a good example.

  • LOL

  • fuck, is anyone in this video sober or what ? and we think drugs/alcohol are a problem now ?!

  • Ozzy Osbourne 52:13

  • does anyone know if at 17:28 that is Pat from Ross McElwee's Sherman's March?

  • The reason this looks so good is that a purely black and white signal has tons of bandwidth unto itself. In NTSC color, a portion of the signal is allocated. This results in less detail and blotchy color. VHS would suck far less if recorded with a black and white camera. But that is all in the past. DV cameras cost less than $200 now!

  • Thank you for posting that piece of cinematic history.

  • 35 years later our cameras don't have sound quality this good? WTF? Someone explain this to me please. How did he get such great sound 35 years ago?

Where is all the static and distortion that I get in my $900 camera mic from 2008?

  • The camera was bulky (still a double system of sorts) where the sound equipment was mainly exterior to the camera and recorded with a boom microphone... built in microphones appeared in the mid 1980s and brought the sound quality considerably down...

  • LOLOL !

  • Wow, what a beautiful girlfriend; Marsha.

  • Wow =]

I liked it for some odd reason?:)

  • I'm so confused as to what this is...

  • There should be more videos of this nature on Youtube. Glad someone had the time to pursue such a rich and rewarding endeavor and create such an interesting video.

  • Thanks to Matt Dentler for turning me on to this gem.

  • Very interesting in those times. Thanks for posting this small piece of history.
