This pre-cursor to Michael Moore had a point, but, as his life showed, once this 'so called' socialist' got into HIS 1%, he lived it up instead of spreading his wealth like Hussein Obama would have wanted him to. I don't blame him - he worked hard, and through creativity, he made his way - NOT easy. However, I am not a socialist, and I believe in Capitalism. Upton was playing the part of Hypocrite a la Michael Moore and any other Hollywood elite!!
The content of this project war really good. Too bad the sound quality is poor, as I think this is something that could be passed around to others for use as a lesson or other type of tool for learning.
@ponageskater20 I knew someone who worked for a few months in a packing house. He never thought about it, but after that experience he turned vegetarian lol. I'm not vegetarian but if I had to work in one of those places and actually see it all that might turn me into one too.
@Logicel Actually, Theodore Roosevelt (A Republican), was the one who passed the meat inspection act, as well as the pure food & drug act. He also was known for his love of nature, and his desire to create national parks and conversations. Roosevelt was also known for being at the head of the progressive movement for civil rights, trustbusting and federal arbitration. Sorry to ruin your "Liberals are for the advancement of mankind," and Conservatives are for "War, hate and Christianity," idea.
@AnnoyingFlamingo That's a disingenuous and false manipulation of hitsory and you know it. There's a big idealogiocal difference between T. Rosevelt and R. Raegan, just like there is a big difference between between A. Lincoln and G. Bush II. Next thing you'll do is compare W. Wilson to J. Kennedy because they are both democrats. Just like a typical conservative to make these very sweeping gneralizations. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
great video. I am doing a history day project this year on the meat packing industry in chicago. I was wondering where you found the video component of your documentary; it's great footage.
@christo930 That's right... Our information about nutrition was sadly lacking then. We had no idea we could live on plant based protein! Also, we did not really understand nonhuman sentience... That animals are very, very much like us in the way they feel pain and pleasure. We did not know then that they value their lives equal to the way we value our own. But through it all... It's wonderful to live in an age where we can finally EVOLVE! ;)
@christo930 No - I believe you're incorrect. A cat, cow, dog, pig, frog, bird, etc. wishes to live with just as much desire as man. "Anyone who says that life matters less to animals than it does to us has not held in his hands an animal fighting for its life. The whole of the being of the animal is thrown into that fight, without reserve." Elizabeth Costello
And in contrast I know that many humans willfully "go" or at least have a desire for their lives to end. No. I think it's the same.
@beaelliott Well, I disagree. Animals have no concept of the future or even the past... To an animal, there is only right now. Death is often painful regardless of the animal who goes through it, primate or otherwise. The fact that they are suffering in the moment doesn't mean they are regretting all of the places they haven't gone, vacations they didn't take...
@christo930 So because they don't regret not taking vacations... Or not returning over-due library books - That justifies using/killing them? What about braindead, comatose patients? What about infants? They have no concept of what the future/past is either. Sorry, I still don't see that there is any justification in causing innocent life harm when there are other alternatives. Guess that was the way I was brought up... To be kind whenever possible.
@beaelliott I didn't say it did, I simply said that they don't value life in the way that humans do, because they aren't human and therefor are different. I didn't say they "deserved" it or anything like that. I even admitted that they feel pain every bit as much as we do. I only very rarely eat meat and live mostly a vegetarian life, but I do still occasionally eat meat. We are designed to eat meat, that is just reality.
@christo930@christo930 We are designed to eat plants as well... We will not die without the consumption of flesh. And if there is no need... If we are not bushmen or Inuits with no other alternative it just doesn't seem the right choice to cause (even momentary) pain when there are other (as good) alternatives. Glad you've reduced your meat consumption - It really is a fine option for health... Better for the planet and the kindest way to live. ~peace~
hate national history day. that ruined middle school social studies for me.

Anyone who thinks that a sign of a successful gov is that it balloons into 18 separate agencies under 1 heading is crazy.

@beaelliott The lower animals do not "value their lives" the way we do. They do feel pain, that's for sure though.
