Badnarik really revealed himself as a kind of intellectual lightweight (and I think he began to realize this, too, as the event progressed). He just seemed incapable of putting 2 and 2 together, speaking of government's failures out of one side of his mouth but still murkily calling for its continued existence out of the other. Stefan was simply consistent, whereas Badnarik was self-contradictory at every turn.

Great Debate! I listened to it as soon as it was on the podcast feed.

Regarding the "Don Corleone" DRO comment from Badnarik--my immediate thought was that this would be answered by competitive DROs. I thought you (Stef) were going to ask the audience for a show of hands of who did not agree with the victim's heir being allowed to hire a hit on the murderer. Everyone with a raised hand is potential market for a competing DRO to protect people from the Corleones.

You should have told Badnarik that some of us are not willing to hold guns and shoot the bad guys, as some of us are not willing to grow our potatoes or make our own computers.

For that a security company will exist with professionals holding the guns and being paid to protect the ones that don't have the time or the proficiency to do that.

Listened to this podcast and was surprised at how absolutely disorganized Badnarik's thoughts seemed. Half the time he was trying to impress us with how manly he is with his guns. You need to clearly define what "government" is at the beginning of your speeches though... you guys had to backtrack halfway through this discussion to do just that.

Stef, this is how I define the state.

an aggressive violent monopoly or near monopoly of certain services over land not tied to labor or over individuals who have not consented which, by the general public conception, does so in a manner not considered to be legitimate for other groups or individuals to engage in.

Haha, well done. I like Badnarik but since I've went full anarchist, I'm fascinated at how much libertarian will clinch to government (albeit small). I mean, WTF does it uniquely bring to small people anyways other than a few yearly tax return cheques and a career opportunity as politician ?
