Carols son had been killed just weeks prior. She was channeling her pain in that song. And as we all saw, it was absolutely gripping. The writer/producer of the film said it wasn't even Carols turn to audition but she just stood up and belted. How could they turn her away after that.

The scene with Carol Woods has it's own story. I was lucky enough to have seen a private viewing of the film before it's release (courtesy of Oprah). Following the theater trip, we went back to the studio for a taping of the show, where the biggest stars of the movie sang. It was awesome. But mire than that, the story of Carol came out.

I LOVE this special, and the way Julie Taymor portrayed this song in the film was just absolutely beautiful. I can't watch it without crying because I had a young friend when I was 15 who was shot in a drive-by. He died a week later. He was 13. It had been a mistaken identity. He was the sweetest boy, and I think of him every time I see that little boy in that casket. It really does change you. Kudos to Julie! Thank you!
