The real shame is all of the absolutely incredible Wurlitzer organs of the 60's that sell for $50- $100 on Craigslist if the seller is lucky. These organs blow Hammond away. They can play every style of music, whether a solid combo organ , huge theater organ , a full blown diapason church organ , or a funky groovin' jazz organ, the Wurlitzer 4300 spinet or 4500 console are just a couple that can do it all, and do it all well! Listen to- ' Wurlitzer Organ John La Duca 4500/4502/4300 ' . ALL organ
I went to a community college that had a room full of these Wurlitzers as practice pianos, barely ever used. Used to sneak in and play them. Wish I had run off with one!!!
Sha Na Na played one of these at Woodstock. It now sits in a display at the Museum at Bethel Woods on the original woodstock site. (not green tho)
@animalman1122 Actually, "down by the seaside" has a Hohner Electra Piano. It used reeds similar to a Wurli, but as the lower leg of an asymmetrical tuning fork, like a Rhodes (as opposed to a tine). Cheers!
I'm curious about the Wurlitzers and how they differed from a Fender Rhodes. I recall reading somewhere that, while the Fender used a harpsichord-style plucking mechanism to produce their sound, the Wurlis had a tonewheel system akin to their organs. The sounds are very similar.
@YusakuJon3 They both use a simplified hammer action, similar to that of an acoustic piano (Although the Rhodes action is much more simplified). The Wurli uses a reed vibrating through an electrostatic pickup, and the Rhodes uses an asymmetrical tuning fork, with the lower "leg" being a tine, that vibrates in front of an electromagnetic pickup.
A plucking action can be found in Hohner's Cembalet. Tonewheels are found in the Hammond Organ.
Thank you for the correction. I knew that the Wurli used a reed system, which made me think it was more like a pipe organ (my pre-teen mind interpreting phrases within a book on musical instruments), so I was thinking that Hammond organs had a similar mechanism. More recently, I learned about the tonewheel system of the Hammonds.
For some reason, the book that I was reading back then also gave me the impression that the Fender Rhodes was more like a traditional piano.
What I´d say!! Yeah

Cool sound. Same type of piano Eddie Van Halen used through his Marshall amp on "And The Cradle Will Rock"

Just found a 200 at the trash. Started playing this song on it, but on a different key. I played the intro on the black keys.
