I'm planning to hitch across America after college. I'm a High School grad (soon). I just wanna bum it across the whole 50. Make my way like Jack Kerouac did in the 50s. Of course times have changed so things will be different for me.... And I'm black so some of those racist states might need to be avoided. lol

....What a laugh....you really made me laugh!! I hitched a lot in my younger days.....from the UK (I’m from the UK) all the way down to Israel & back, a couple of times! I hitched all around France, (seen more of France than my own country UK!) I hitched all around Italy, Corsica, (French Island) Indonesia, and Thailand. Sometimes i had to wait a few hours to get a lift, you know, one of those dead area places that you were dropped off from previous lift. Part 2 below…

Took my girlfriend hitching for her first time a couple of years ago. Made a HUGE mistake in taking a lift to what I thought was a part-way town but it wasn't.

We got dropped at the side of a 50mph road at dusk with cars and HGVs screaming past and no more than a foot wide grass verge to stand on.

We got a lift to the next town from a farmer and a lift to our destination from there, but that was a BAD spot to be in.

Still worth doing though.

Part 2…. I met many other hitchers; they gave me good advice too, about how to hitch. I had a lot of 'gay' picking me up in France, its notorious there! I'm 'straight' by the way, but found some hitchers were gay too! Funny world out there never ran into trouble though. I had on some occasions, sexy women picking me up, one took me back to her high-class apartment, (France) and you can guess what happened there all night till morning! Got quite few women this way! Part 3 below…

Part 3….Generally though, I loved to meet people, this was a nice way, I even had some drivers that picked me up in North of France and drove me all the way down to Naples! I had farmers pick me up & take me to their farm for breakfast, or lunch, even got a job looking after sheep in a field (Corsica) and was paid with just food! I had all sorts of ventures in those hazy days; miss them, now married with child.

My significant other is positively encouraging of me keeping up my travel adventures.

I use to hold up a $5 bill and that would get some to stop but they usually didn't want the $5 they were glad to see I had my own money and probably didn't smell like a bum. I don't do it anymore it can be fun and you can get charged with possession if the car has drugs. I don't pick up HH because I now have a lot more to loose. It is just too risky in today's environment. What really teed me off were the cops hassling me.

worldofthablind: I know it's been a while since you posted your comment, but, I thought I'd clarify something for you. "Hitchhiking" in itself isn't illegal, but being a pedestrian on the interstate is. When on the "I" system strictly stick to the on-ramps. I found out the hard way. The trooper did have to take me 20miles (my direction) so I could pay the fine. (if you can't pay the fine, you get to see the judge, which could take a day or two)
