  • class track, class band & an honour to have been a witness.

  • to Malcolm Owen- starr! Alive

  • for those of us LUCKY enough to live through the punk era, we were LUCKY and kids today will never understand what it was like to live during a time we didnt give a shit about life only having a good time and the state generally LEFT US ALONE TO ENJOY OURSELVES !!

  • @Evthedrunk you should probably check it out its awesome. not how i discovered the ruts though

  • This is FUCKING CLASS _ u CUNTS! - Proper BRITISH - ENGLISH - Means fuck all - God bless him - I wasnt even born when this was out - Fuck off u cunts

  • State of world Ruts what a band if a cover brought you hear fine, but man whats up with young people, Clash,Ruts,Damned,Buzzcocks,999, DKs all out their and they blow the arse off anything in last 20 years.

  • what a band

  • oh this is fucking proper

  • Segs still has hair here!

  • I'm also 47, and know them well. In the very early 80's here in Melbourne an underground radio station used to play The Ruts stuff. I can't thank them enough

  • wow iam 47 and remember them in my teens,,just a great band

  • Classic!

  • Comment removed

  • malcom's voice just fit the sound, and the sound fit malcom's voice just perfectly. henry rollins was good fill-in for that one gig, but the sound just wasnt the same.

  • how oi as fuck does malcolm look on this?

  • I saw Gallows do this live at Oxford (with Lethal Bizzle!) and got to say they did it credit, I see it as a compliment to those that influenced them. The whole set was powerful and tight. Most eras cover something from the past, Pistols did Steppin Stone, Stranglers did Walk on By etc. RIP MO

  • @ClashCityRocket my mate loves the gallows...he didnt know this was a cover....played him this...he nearly poo-ed at how good this........

  • How I loved this band.

  • A true classic. Punks not dead!

  • one of the best punk band ever, and agreat lead singer

  • Classic - but some things never change : while most of us are dancing around like dangerous maniacs to some amazing music, there are idiots here with nothing better to do than start a fight. Well, f**k you, I'm here to dance...

  • BRILLIANT - 1980 was a great year for rock music - the 80s was shite - but 1980 was the last year of the 70s - if you know what i mean - in December 1980 Spandau Ballet released their first record and the 80s began - but before that record was released it was great

  • i love both gallows and ruts versions anyway you ass wankers lol

  • Being 57 I saw most of the punk bands back then.. Including The Clash, Jam, Undertones, Boomtown rats and many more but The Ruts were by far the tightest most exciting band I ever saw... Even now when I put that old LP on the hairs on the back of my neck start to bristle and I cant help singing along....

Gallows gave it a good shot for their generation but landed well short of the mark..

Bit too much anger in their style for me but a good go nevertheless...

  • @bobreeder did you see any of the 2 TONE bands mate?

  • @beano1eye No... 2Tone was never my thing..

  • This is good, and it's a LEGENDARY song, but the gallows gave it a little kick ya'know, it's just that LITTLE bit more badass. Frank carter is a ginger with a soul, and as for the guitarist, he plays the song perfectly doesn't he? no mistakes. and the raper just adds a little twist, which is what punk is really about, NOT conforming and being the same.

  • @greendaydudesayshi Wash your mouth out with soap and water you stupid cunt!!!! The Gallows want fuckin shootin for fuckin such a great song up. WANKER!!!

  • @MOONST0MP , why? everyone has a right to their opinion, and sorry what did you just call me? wanker, cunt . . hmmm, and IM the one thats supposed to wash my mouth out?? anyways, it's not like i slagged this song off, i love it, but im open to all kinds of music, and i like the gallows version better. calm down dude, it's a song. >.<

  • @greendaydudesayshi When I watched the Gallows video of them attemptin to do this I felt sick, it was pathetic and I will never watch that shit again, This is a classic. Mabey I am sayin this because I bought the single when I was a kid when it first came out. All i can say is i am so glad I aint young today, Music was so much better when I was young. To me them Gallows wankers should have more respect, how dare they make such a mess of a great song. And dont call me 'dude' you fuckin prick!

  • @MOONST0MP Hear hear!!! Very well said my freind.

  • @MOONST0MP , i can call you whatever i like, it's not rude, and threatening me over the internet doesnt make you look hard, pack it in. and they did have respect, that's the whole point of the gallows cover, because lets face it, most people don't have a clue who the ruts are, unless they're oldl enough to have experienced them when they came out, so what they gallows actually did was bring the song to light and introduce it in a way that appeals to the younger generation, like me.

  • @greendaydudesayshi "Threatenin you over the internet"?????? I havent threatend anybody over the internet? I said 'dont call me Dude you fuckin prick.' If you go round callin people 'dude' then you must be a prick ok.

  • @MOONST0MP how does calling you dude make me a prick? jeez, if anyones a prick it's you, who swears for no reason, get a life dude!

  • The Gallows version is a poor attempt, mainly coz the musicianship isn't even close to The Ruts.....

  • What a band .,.. !!!!

  • Saw them as a teenager at Clouds in Edinburgh, with The Mekons and I've had very little nights that top that. I even talked to Faye Fyfe that night.

I have heard the Gallows version of this and to say it is shit really gives shit a bad name.

  • went to see them in Newcastle at the Mayfair before Malcolms untimely death. They were great, I was lucky enough to meet the band and a roadie called Manor. We got pissed and stoned with them at the County hotel. One of my fav punk memories!!! I watched the gallows version of this earlier and found it to be a VERY RESPECTABLE RENDITION.

  • secret soldiers would make a good addition -

  • Gallows version is terrible, the Gallows guitarist is no Paul Fox, and as for Malcolm Owen there's no comparison.

  • crack and smell me arse! pillgrams spelict mistakes lis not speak

  • RUTS... best version... original version

  • gallows.....forget it,nowhere near it

  • long live tha ruts

  • MASSIVE

  • lost count the amount of times i saw the ruts.fuck me what a great band even today no one can top em rip malc and foxy.

  • oh yeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh

  • Yeah the Gallows version is more raw in my opinion... Anyway the rap part with Bizzle is because the song was anti-racism. Which is the whole meaning of punk in the first place.

  • malcolm owen 14/7/80 aged 26 almost 30 years ago

    GONE TO SOON

  • No bands today even come close to the bands of the late seventies

  • Am i allowed to love this AND gallows' version?

  • @therur I do ^^''

  • no :D

  • aboslute top flippin brilliant brilliant

  • the guitar guys r a Lil too happy!!!!!

  • rude boys are fecking amazing

Ska and Punk ftw (Y) ;)

  • great band - RIP Malcolm & Foxy!

  • I don't know much about the Gallows, but I do know that to cover a song is the highest complement one band can give to another! \m/

  • @thecos1337 what about the whole rapping part? :p

  • @JimmyMayorga well, every band has it's own style. I think covering a song exactly how it was made is fine, but a real musician will add his own style to the song

  • @thecos1337 Right, but a ghetto acting MTV hip-hopper is not exactly what a punk rock band should include in any of their songs, let alone a cover of a song by another band.

  • @JimmyMayorga XD oh, believe me, I agree, but whatever. Let them be happy and do their thing, and we'll do ours!

  • @thecos1337 excellent point. and just so we're clear, I love the gallows's version, too. I just skip the rap part and pretend it never happened x)

  • @JimmyMayorga cool man! I like their version too, but I prefere the Ruts...

    Rock on kiddo -^_^-

  • @JimmyMayorga Where's this punk rule book then? I always thought the whole point was year zero forever, no rules, no formula to commodify

  • @handofsutekh

Too right. It's meant to be diverse. Not identikit narrow minded hardcore thrash.

  • Bizzle is in the Gallows version because they covered it to combat racism and to fund cancer research. This is an anti racism song to begin with, they did it in Foxy's honour!

  • To me this doesnt appeal as much as Gallows does, since i like harder vocals and i think these vocals are much like to pop and hardly punk, but thats just my opinion.

  • Hmmm....The Ruts Wrote & Recorded This 30 years ago...Gallows was a cover, released shortly after Foxy's death..in his honour..get over yourselves!!

  • they id it for music against racisum thats why

  • I know this is the original, but I think that Gallows did it better.

  • The who?

  • Yep, but 30 years later without writing it....

  • Gallows must have heard the original from their parents (vinyl) record collection! RIP Malcolm and Paul.

  • THIS was a tune i was 14 listerned to this Yellow Man and all sorts and to the man that said John Peel ! Nothing but respect for that Man ! LEGEND . His mind was free and how many bands got their break on his show !

  • Gallows version sucked arse! Kind of an insult that such a piss-poor cover came out when Foxy was dying of cancer :(

  • gallows did a great cover, fuck you loser

  • this and TG Version are fkin beasty

  • Wow. This is the first time I've heard this version. I like it loaaaaads. Its gritty and a lot more emotional than the Gallows version.

Gallows ruined the song, by letting Lethal Bizzle in it. :(

  • The Ruts and The Damned rule!

  • LAst of the great Brit bands. Saw them in 1979 or so.

  • cheers classic

  • The Gallows cover is a modern version, but as a vocalist he doesn't hold a candle to the original. Gallows are just a new band, that's all. The original captures the energy and excitement of the time period when it was first released. I can still recall every single lyric 29 years later.

  • This is an amazing song, but I like how Gallows changed it to be directed at wiggers.

  • not all white people who like rap are wiggers. and lets be real here, punk and rap have a pretty extensive history. johnny rotten was friends with afrikaa bambataa (or however that's spelled)....

  • I didn't say they were. I love rap, but I don't act like a wigger. I didn't say "at white people who like rap", I said wiggers.

  • and dee dee ramone took a short lived try at rap

  • Lydon & Bambatta did a record together...

  • Best punk band ever! Malcolm's a genius! RIP

  • rip

  • The Punks in the corner are Speeding like a jet. Brilliant.

  • I have this episode actually and its a repeat performance from the 17th of April 1980 and Peter Powell is introducing it at the beginning of the clip.

  • what a belting tune

  • yes sorry i probably should have been more specific - most kids don't experience the diversity in youth culture

  • augek Cheers pal.

    Excellent. Brings back great memories

  • This reminds me of the pitch battles between the musical factors at the time. Punks, mods, rude boys, skins and metalheads were all at it. Everyone gets on now which is great. We know we have the same common enemies - society! PROPAGANDA!! PROPAGANDA!!!

  • from mid 70s to 81 were fucking amazing times for music the rest u can keep

  • i feel very privaliged to have been 16 when punk kicked off - kids today don't experience the diversity in youth culture like we did

  • @iveco321

yes kids don't experiance youth culture....

    :s

  • @iveco321 I'm 15 and I envy you

  • @WazzzupWill its amazing how many younger people are listening to 70's and 80's music , good on ya !

  • I appreciate their energy but really the Gallows version is ridiculous. Silly liberties with the lyrics to make it a fashion-punk party anthem? Please. Ironically, Dag Nasty did the same thing in the 80's with their straight edge version of the song. Also ridiculous. The original stands the test of time.

  • True, my brother, true !

  • PUNK RULES

  • If Carlsberg made this song it would 'Probably be the best punk record ever'. R.I.P Malcolm

  • i actually prefer the gallows' version *hides*

  • This is an awesome song, just irritates me, when they guitarist and bassist do that stupid status quo bit with their guitars.

  • Status Ouo or Mud? What a shame there isnt a dececent version of West One with Malc on you toob.

  • He was dead by the time it came out so they couldn't really promote it properly.

  • Anyone remember this was played constantly on Stuart Henry[Radio Lux;} while the movie by the Clash was in the Cinemas,Rude Boy........???

  • the ruts are timeless!

much respect to malcolm owen and paul fox!!!!!!

rest in peace my brothers!, rest in peace!

big up to john robb from goldblade for doing so much and helping with the dvd!

  • This version is magnificent... The Gallows fucking suck dick.

  • more melodic than Gallows version- the other one is more wild but I like both

  • This is a much more powerful version than the gallows one...its just weak. boys vs men i'm afraid...sound like they should be on pop idol. Shame really wanted to like it, but i guess the The Ruts did it right first time around and all others will pale compared to this timeless classic

  • not sure how anyone can compare Gallows to The Ruts, Gallows shout a bit, The Ruts were second only to the Clash in their championing of black music at the time of punk, and wrote songs that meant, and still mean something.

  • enittt.

  • i think Gallows are quite annoying but their cover was cool, only because it had Lethal Bizzle on it. other than that, i prefer the original

  • You what? You mean Bizzles, what.. Minute in the song?

    Right.

  • make more sense next time please

& Gallows suck. they are so late. just like Wolfmother & The Darkness were lol

  • I'm not even sure what I meant mate, just couldn't really see how the small time of space where Bizzle was singing made the song any better, it was mainly just Gallows doing what they usually do and making quite abit of noise. I hate wolfmother and the darkness. Whatever happened to Wolfmother? Did they just disappear off the face of the Earth?

  • lets face it gallows arent brilliant? maybe everyone should stop reading too much nme?

  • The Gallows version is a whole lot stronger and more rallying then this, but doesn't carry the message. But the whole point of that is because this generation doesn't need that message and doesn't need to get a song going to kick the crap out'a Nazis. There aren't any going to gigs and if they are found, survival rate is pretty low for them. The Gallows version suits our time just like The Ruts suited theirs. Both as good as the other in my opinion.

  • I think the gallows cover maybe doesn't carry such a strong message but I think they've just re-done it as an attempt to unite the youth of today, shame its not that simple

  • 2 of 2.During this time (late 70s and the 80s) a Nazi/racist Skinhead faction reared its ugly head and regularly clashed with Rude Boys and basically anyone else they get there Nazi saluting hands on. Violence was just as bad then!

Nazi Skins and Reggae Skins/Rude Boys should NEVER be confused! N.B. Check out the Two Tone label. KICK FUCK OUT THE NAZI BASTARDS!

God bless The Ruts. R.I.P Paul Fox.

P.S. The potent message of this song is lost in The Gallows cover, but still a good effort.

  • The raw and gutsy passion of The Ruts will never be topped.

This song touches on the tribal tension of youth culture at the time.

Rude Boys were of Jamaican origin (late 50s/early 60s) and their lifestyle revolved around Ska, distinctive smart attire and at times serious violence.

Ska was grasped by the first Mods (circa 64) and then by the original Skinhead movement (circa 69) who were heavily influenced by the Rude Boys.

All three cults enjoyed a renewal 10 years on.

  • we will never surrender

  • rude boys = skinheads?

  • Rude Boys - Gangster types..

  • this is amazing!!! gallows cover cannot be compare to the original this song is real street music!!! gallow is hardcore for mallpunx .

  • this is a cool song.check out gallows reworking of it.

  • this song is about kickin the crap outta nazis!

  • go thr ruts english masters

  • yeh! lol

  • Ahh...my youth returned in 2 minutes!Good call.

  • What passion! This is what its about!!

  • Well said.

This version is more melodic, and the Gallows cover is more shouty & hardcore, but tbh they both own.

  • we had a band in vienna, who covered it double speed... oh my, back in the eighties ... never surrender!

  • i'm with you Bro

  • HAAHAHAHA xD

  • Dag Nasty covered this song too, B side of the 7" "All ages show". The Ruts were great. Jah War is a classic too; the 2 albums are, probably, among the best punk albums of that period, and if you believe punk and reggae can be mixed intelligently,if don't know about it, check Stiff Little Fingers Peel session, for a cover of "Johnny was" (Bob Marley) , and "it doesn't make it allright" (The specials), and yes, I know, the Clash bla bla.. but, never been a big fan, sorry.

  • I do as well :]

  • ruts version is, of course, better - its the original , so it HAS to be better. Can't think of many covers that surpass the creators.

  • there are a few covers that do add and surpass the originals - but listen mate - Gallows are NOT one of them and hardly deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Hendrix's cover of All Along the Watchtower. Also just who's version of Knockin' is better than Dylans? answer : no one's (and please don't say GnR).

  • well I pay homage to the original guys ya know they had the idea and so without this no gallows version but i agree the gallows track has more agression... i love both versions this kinda gives me an age around Thin Lizzy

  • classic

  • Tune!

  • Bloody amazing song. Up there with GSTQ and White Riot.

  • wow

  • Punk is not the music, punk is the attitude imho!!!

  • the pistols r set to relese new songs and maybe a new album the stranglers r still going the buzzcokcs r still releasing albums so is the damned so how the fuck is punk dead

  • Fuck you Faggot, you obviously don't know what punk is

  • Hah, you need to give me a shout when the pro's show up then. Might want to buy yourself a Gallows album :)

  • this song is all about the clash of white

teenage cults skins, punks, mods right wing versus the left etc. and gigs were usually disturbed by outbreaks of violance hardly relevent today

  • ya know, never was the biggest fan of the ruts, and I do like the Gallows, but I gotta say, in my mind, both renditions are about equal, with positives and negatives.

  • totally agree... still RIP

  • ooh i have an opinion, i must be an idiot

  • fuk sake lol u make it sound like gallows have banned ppl from lisnin to this version n now they av dun a version of it no1 can ever lisen to the original the havent ruined it evn if u dnt lik the gallows version doesnt mean this is ruined

    tehe

  • Call me naive but i would never have heard this song if it wasn`t for Gallows. They`ve hardly ruined it, it sounds very similiar.

  • call me naive but I would never heard of the Gallows if they hadn't covered this song

  • Well you have the Ruts to thank for that. And the Ruts will probably be thanking Gallows for raising their profile and introducing them to the youth of today. Punk is alive and well.

  • True my friend true.

  • ruts thanking the gallows lol ,other way round ,never heard of the gallows

  • punk died in 1978/9 then transformed into new wave , you cant beat the pistols, the strangers, the damned, and the buzzcocks, etc, todays punks could have a thousand gallows and still couldnt match the 70s scene, try as you mite

  • Sorry mate, punk is still alive. The Pistols are doing a number of gigs this year!! And the Gallows guitarist is technically superior to most of the punks of the 70`s.Buy their album, you might be surprised.
