There is not a high demand anymore. Sucks for the 2011 grads like myself, you are practically begging for a job, even with a company you have been with for many years
That's not entirely true... I read in my health science book that in 2012 hiring rate will boom once again for pharamacists! :D so don't give your hopes up!
Is she a pharmacy technician? Isn't a technian position avaiilable after just an undergrad egree in pharmacy? Or is she one of those pharmacists that work with the doctors?
I started out pre pharmacy got better grades than my class mates who got in pharmacy school and graduated. Gave that up got a chemistry degree had a hard time getting work with that so I went and got a BSN I am an RN now who can not get a job due to ObamaCare and the ObamaEconomy. If I had the time and money I would go and become a pharmacist.
believe me... am working in Saudi arabia in ARAMCO company and aloot of american patients came gto me complaining abt their doctors and how stupid they were and they didnt get any benefit from their prescriptions!!
as long as i can prescribe anything i want ( we dont really stick to the rules)
i gave him two drugs and he came after 4 days and was willing to kiss my foot!!!
it was BPH
and many othr women came and thanked me cus of the same thing
Also the demand for pharmacists has dramatically decreased due to the economy and the abundant of freshly minted students form dozens of new pharmacy schools. The chains have really slowed expension, and for me it was very hard getting places, even though I had been with my company for 5 years. We have also expereinced a hiring freeze in my company.Unless you are planning to live in the middle for nowhere I doubt you will get a sign on bonus. Before you consider this profession try it out first
Sorry to be negative BUT here is the scoop on pharmacy. I am 25 years old and graduated 5 months ago from Pharmacy school. I moved to Florida because my area was saturated and it was hard getting emplyment, especially with the economy. Pharmacy is good but if you are in it just for the money you are going to be miserable. There is a HUGE work load, tech hours are being cut left and right, you are expected to do more with less and at times you get little repect from patient's, RN, and MDs.
yes, pharmacy is a very competitive career but with the demand for pharmacists in canada and the us, salaries will only be going up to encourage people to become pharmacists. In canada you can make like 80,000 - 130,000 a year. in america you can make like 70,000 - 110,000 a year. expect to see the canadian salary raise since we keep losing medical doctorates to america.
@blindskater1994 Actually,Walgreen starting salaries for Pharmacists are 130k in 95% of areas in U.S. + a signing bonus averaging 30k,pretty good in my opinion.
The advantage with Pharmacy,is that you can work as much OT as you want, you may end up billing for 250k/year if you worked 90 hours/week like an MD.
There's also no malpractice fees(Specialist Physicians have to burn up to 50% of their yearly salary because of this crap...)
Nobody that just wants to do this for the money will make it through. I thought I wanted the money but 2 years into a PharmD it takes a lot of dedication
I wanna be a pharmacist :). It sounds like fun. The school sounds like a bitch, but it doesn't dissuade me, the pay is pretty fricking good, and it doesn't last forever, not to mention i used to be pretty big into drugs(i'm completely clean now though) and remembering drug interactions, side effects, generic names and such comes pretty easy to me, i could certainly get it with repetition, hell i still remember some of the stuff i researched and that was a few years ago.
selling real estate, that sounds boring, not to mention the economy's down now. Yes it will pick up, but that sounds boring as hell, and gees the schooling for that would be excruciatingly boring, pharmacy school is really difficult, but i like chemistry and i love biology so it fits me fairly well, however i'm not the best at math, but you can achieve anything if you're dedicated enough.
I've researched a lot about Pharmacy because I really want to be one, it's like, my dream job. (I don't know why. Maybe cause it pays really high.) Here in Canada the average is about 35 dollars an hour. Kaching kaching. :) And about the whole research thing.. yeah... I go obsessed with stuff. LOL. I saw a really cute cupcake, and wanted to learn how to bake, so I started. :) Maybe that's a good thing?
@raindropz24 What !!! here in Jordan some drug stores pay less than 180 dollars a month :'( so we don't like pharmacies we prefer to find a job in a company,if it's so well paid I'll come to canada after graduating :P
kaching kaching on 35 dollars an hour? are you insane? it's more about 100 an hour... My dad works at a local store that also has a pharmacy and the guys there get paid 108 bucks an hour...now that's kaching kaching hhaa
yeah, the worlds not like this anymore........
