  • Who LOVEs THE THE music? thumbs up!

  • Hotel bit of this video is so surreal. Probably one of the best segments of the whole music video/film thing.

  • Quite simply the most inspiring songwriter ever

  • pure class

  • Brilliant, havn't seen that video since the 80s - Infected is such an amazing album! Look out for 'Tony', a British movie about a serial killer called Tony. Saw it yesterday and the complete soundtrack is The The. The director is a Johnson so may well be a connection. Check it out if you get the chance, it's pretty good.

  • I've been a Matt/The The fan since "Burning Blue Soul" - this man is a musical genius. I wish he'd make some new music.

  • Love the album -- a great effort, some great songs and some even greater political commentary. Still one of my faves.

Bitterly disappointed by the early 1990's world tour -- we saw terrible, dispassionate performances from Matt Johnson & Johnny Marr -- that'll serve them right for playing along to a click-track when they should've had a fifteen-piece band backing them up . . .

  • Got to have this at my funeral! As the coffin disappears "Come my love with your desire, out of the blue into the fire"

  • Genius at work... Sexy as hell too!

  • I love Matt Johnson, The The, This song, and the video. Thank God for creative art.

  • This song has not dated one day. Brilliance right here.

  • I LOVE it. And I love the Infected-car.

  • Niqull niquill niquill... we love you, you giant f'n Q! Looks like he took some Niquill and flaked out before he had the chance of a shag! (Left his body behind said hello to clouds!)

  • This is the first song I could sing right through without the backing track..still can..total classic and so underated

  • @dinnadoit yeah me too, although at 12 years of age singing into my tape recorder did raise my parents eyebrows, especially the stuffed pig lyrics. innocence!

  • Superb composition. It just builds and builds. Great album, great band. The 80's weren't all pop and leg warmers, there was some substance!!

  • Masterpiece

  • This is my favourate song of all time. I have loved it for sooo many years and tonight I see the vid for the first time!

    THE THE rock!!!!!

  • Classic

  • Check out the little known track "three orange kisses from kazan" also posted on youtube and taken from an original version of the soul mining album!Contrasting and illustrating, if need be, the varied musical range of The The!

  • pure excellence still

  • the Devils borrowed my clothes... just... for tonight...

  • Awwwweesome to see a video for this brilliant song! Wicked tune!!

  • "She was lying on her back with her lips parted squealing like a stuffed pig,

I was going through the motions faking the emotions wriggling around like a lizard in a tin!". One of the greatest lyricists of all time, no question!

  • one of my favourite songs. Amazing, brilliant

  • i want to feel your body not your mind............oh yes that hits the spot:))....can smell the excitement...

  • One of my favourite songs ever. It starts off subdued then it starts pounding. Remind you of anything?

  • ahhh I love everything about this song!

  • Best song in the world to have sex to. Bar none. "DONT TELL ME WHAT YOUR NAME IS, I WANT YOUR BODY NOT YOUR MIND". "I JUST KEPT WONDERING, HOW MANY MEN, UNLEASHED THEIR FRUSTRATIONS BETWEEN HER THIGHS".

"I WAS TRYING SO HARD TO BE MYSELF I WAS TURNING INTO SOMEBODY ELSE."

  • Wow...I'm SO glad I found this...saw The The in concert with Depeche Mode in Orlando Florida back in 1993 or 1994 I think it was....what an amazing show!! I will NEVER....NEVER forget it!!!

  • dirty and sexy - the anthem of an era of excess.

  • I bought the Infected album as a Vhs video when it came out in 1985 (I think) Every song with it's own mini movieand everyone of them excellent. This stuff still moves me big style.

  • I saw it at a friends house in 1986 when i was 15 it blew me away what a live concert !!! Im looking for it and my search for the the live actually started today !! It has left a serious impression on me .

  • ack..showing my age ......but i had the entire "infected" movie/video on vhs but my mum taped over it! but i did have the privilege of a concert with the cranberries as an opening as 21st bday present!

  • @DeGannett lol, me too. I think I bought the video before the album (not sure why). I think l liked the look of the cover - hadn't heard of them before. Definitely one of the most under rated bands ever. I was the only person I knew that liked them. Still watch the video with the lights out, volume up, late at night with a beer in hand.

  • @cheekyboy099 True for ye Cheekyboy099! Pretty much the same with me being the only person around who liked them. I lost that VHS in a house move around 1990 (thank God Youtube was invented) along with my only other Video album, which was something by The Cure. Aboiut twice a year or so I get on here and watch all the Infected vids I can find( late at night ,beer in hand of course.Age does not fade those tracks!

  • @DeGannett : I so agree with you! This has to be my favourite album as a whole. I even called the band I sang with here in Italy 'Out of the Blue' ....Just incredible. And as you said, every song is like a setting for a wild, dark film

  • Really liked this when i was an Angry Young Man off at college. She can chew

her gum in my room anyday...

  • One of my all time fav bands, sound as good today as they did back in the yonder! Sophia11 your a star!!! :)

  • Great song on a great album! Listened to it over and over before going out when I was stationed in Maryland. Fantastic times.

  • Oh what a great song by a criminaly underated band.

  • Matt Johnson was THE THE BEST!!! Great voice, well written songs, funcky sound... watched all this "infected" video , over and over, and over at 13 yrs old!! It was important, groundbreaking stuff that has stood the time test. Only Erasure are equal to my mind. thanks for posting Sophie

  • .....

  • hHA out of thr blue into the fire

    hilarious little pun there

  • Wow! This has just opened a big box of great memories for me.

  • AWESOME... sensational.

  • One of the best music videos of all time. Sheer class. Superb album also obviously. Genius stuff.

  • my first introduction to the the from my first serious boyfriend david was in 1987 just love it still x

  • OMG flashbacksville!

  • one of my favourite albums of all time...social comment at its best..brilliant writing

  • this was me back in the olden days lol

  • What a brilliant song!!! :-)

  • fantastico

  • What an album! Matt is a genius. I will never get bored of music of this quality.

  • I demand that Matt start making more music. Every lyric and tone is like a wall against so much bullshit music made today. this points to development of music, not copyingen.

  • Classic. The The.... Infected has to be one of the best albums ever - and the vid of the Album is equaly incredible...an absolute classic too....this track has always been my favourite of favourites..Matts voice is sensational

  • Brilliant song, one of my favs ever....

  • MATT IS GOD!

  • very powerful song and video !! AWESOME,,,

BETTER THAN MOST OF THE FUCKIN SHITE IN THE CHARTS TODAY,

  • The crescendo and last half of this song is amazing...wonderful melody.

  • One of the best The The songs out there, next to Slow Train to Dawn.

  • "She was lying on her back with her lips parted squealing like a stuffed pig

I was going through the motions faking the emotions wriggling like a lizard in a tin

Trying so hard to cleanse myself i was turning into somebody else"

most memorable lyrics ive heard in lat 25 yrs

id love to know his inspiration for them!

  • INDEED Loved those lines!

  • Before the The I listened to Madonna and Springsteen, after the The I listened to The Smiths.

    Enough said. :)

  • I hadn't thought of this song since i was in my early 20's. Love it. It was dedicated to my first lover...*rueful laugh*

  • Brilliant song - brings back so many great memories - Matt was about 10 years ahead of his time- genius

  • Way ahead of his time, in production and concept including vids for every song, no way nowadays would a major label put so much into an cult artist, seen this on Ch4 in 86 when I was 20 it blew me away, he had 3 classic albums in a row, starting with Soul Mining

  • Couldn't agree more. I was the same age when I heard it on the Tube / CH4 around that time. Gorgeous lady at the end of the video too. Johnson knew.....

  • Yup Remember the channel 4 thing, Killed me. Still one of the best and most complete albums ever. Dogs of lust challenges this as the best The the song ever' Actually this IS better. Where are you Matt? We need you now!!

  • Thank you I have been looking for this song...didnt know the name, but one of my fave tracks on this brilliant album

  • oh i havent heard this song in almost 25 years ty ty ty

  • Man the quality is excellent. Thanks for sharing and stirring an old good memory.

  • My favourite song from The The. Bought the album and video away back in the day and it still sounds superb.

One of the best bands to grace this planet

I love the lyrics to this song

  • brilliant song from the fantastic infected album..

each track had its own video ...

with the album production and many different locations around the world for the videos it cost the record company nearly 2 million to get the finished product out....

a huge risk and unheard of for any other artist at the time...but unded up a massive success in 19 countrys....i still play the cd 23 yrs later.

  • Do you remember 'the 4 of us'?

  • NO...whats that ?

  • They were also Irish, and they did a song that goes "oh mary, why dont you have some sense" - do you know it?

  • That was "The 4 of us"

  • Oh yeah, I was mistaken. Where are they now?

  • I remember them being irish myself, but how are they relevant to The The, Johnson's a genius?

  • I was talking about other influential music. You do not see their origins?

  • one of the best songs by one of the best bands!

  • I love this song.

    saids,

I was trying so hard to be myself

I was turning into somebody else.

    It's so true.

  • One of the best bands of the 80's or any other decade.

  • Great Song. Unfortunatley i have this record on vinyl. Wasn't this song the start of nene cherrys career?

  • wow, are they nene cherry's vocals, all these years, I didn't know that!

  • No, it's Tessa Niles

  • Thanks

  • Neneh sings other song from same album Infected - slow train to dawn

  • Lol @ the Huey Lewis comment! This was possible the stand-out track on one of THE best albums of the 80s. Wonderful vid too. Music you could believe in

  • "There be no sleep till the mornin, there'll be no lullaby's, cause the devils borrowed my clothes, just for tonight."

I doubt anybody has never had thoughts like these run through their head and one time in their life. I'd give 10 stars if I could!

  • cool music

  • So amazing.

  • I meant the part where he says, "She was lying on her back, with her lips parted..."

  • I love it when the strings and female vocals drop in. Id forgotten how awesome The the were.

  • Matt was up there with all the greats...jimmy greaves, martin chivers, Clyde Best etc

  • matt johnson is brillant the the infected best album

  • Anyone heard of another of matts bands called the gadgets??? can't find any of there stuff anywhere and i'd love to hear it. an album called the blue album was released in 1983 i believe. i love The The and have done for as long as i can remember so any help would be appreciated

  • THE DRUGS THE BEER THE BIKES THE GILRLS THE 80s THE 90s THE BEST The The

  • was turning into somebody else.

I was trying so hard to please myself,

I was turning into somebody else.

I was trying so hard to be myself

I was turning into somebody else.

I was trying so hard to be myself

I was turning into somebody else.

I was trying so hard to be myself

I was turning into somebody else

  • brilliant song

  • Listening to The The never gets old.

  • This has got to be one of the greatest songs of the 1980's!

I got into thethe after hearing 'this is the day'.I never thought they could have topped that until I heard this!!

  • TRUTH

  • quite right steve..............Simon

  • Don`t bother putting any crap down, you either like this or you do not! To my mind thus is the dogs bollocks, so enjoy it cause its free... Steve

  • where is Matt?

  • I was feeling strong mouted and weak willed

When I came across the cure to my ills.

    Poetry.

  • I just kept wondering how many men unleashed their frustration between her thigs...

This is the poetry of the thoughtful. Anybody who doesn't like that can stay with Britney and Madonna, if they prefer.

  • WTF would u twats no this is old classic geez back then this was music for ''Men'' bak then that was the style an taste people were into waaay back then

trebligb id realy like to see you sing an make tunes like these guys of course u cant becuse your a nobody so jus stfu

  • This guy writes songs of misery and despair. How would you want him to sing, upbeat and happy?

  • I had this cd and Soul Mining also. It's a shame that I have to discover there were videos made for these songs decades later.

  • Dont watch then, stick to good ol us bands like Huey Lewis You clearly dont have a clue

  • She was lying on her back with her lips parted! That part is so sexy. Love The The!!!

  • added to favorites and this is going straight to my play list

  • And to think this guy might finally get the exposure he so richly deserves because of an "M&M" commercial. He must be rolling on the ground right now!

  • A nice piece of video theatre. The The videos are a cut above.

  • got this when in vietnam, great memories!!

  • laying on her back with her legs(orlips?)lol parted sqeeling like a stuffed pig..brilliant

  • My FAVE line... love the tempo here... LOVE IT!!!

  • The The, wickedly great band. I love the irony created in their pristine musical approach and their lyrics which are darkly dark, almost 'disturbing' - great contrast. Musically sophisticated, too. 'Infected' is brilliant.

  • I love this song. Never knew there was a video for it. Thanks for posting it.

  • There are videos for the entire infected album.

Matt is a legend, best songwriter out there!

  • nice vid and track, takes me back a few years..lots of good memories listenin to the whole album............................fukn class

  • ha ha that was me in the bed in the last part of the video, I showed it to my daughter and we cracked up all day

  • Ha-hah. The things we do for money? Not the ending I wanted to see... Ahem.

  • WOW, WAS THAT YOU.yOU LOOKED FANTASTIC.I WANTED TO LOOSE MY VIRGINTY TO YOU.

  • Love the guitar intro, but I think the lyrics are sh!t

  • Do you have a green scout? Mines silver.

  • ???

  • ???

  • I luuvvved this song! Never saw the video, but me and my BF had some good times to this song - I get drunk and dance too much - ok, sorry TMI!

  • Thanks for posting this. I'll alway treasure my copies of thethe CDs (try to find thethe at amazon *lol* worst band name since google).

  • This guy is a leader because "he makes sense when he speaks." He can walk without falling down. He eats food instead of rocks. He wears clothes instead of refrigerators. He is a chemist.

  • omg!! thanks for posting this great stuff

  • this is my favourite the the song

  • Thank you for putting this online

  • This one and Soul Mining were two of my favourite albums in the 80's..Think I went out and bought them on C.D a few yrs later.

And they say the 80's were a music and fashion blip!!! Never!

  • GREAT SONG..GREAT ALBUM

  • Uhh!

  • love the song, love the video, Matt Johnson is one of the most underated artists of the last 30 years. I saw him in 1989...best gig I've ever seen.
