What BS this movie is !!! If Andrea left Bruce and not the other way around, why did she throw the wine she was drinking in Bruce's face and complain in front of the other party attenders about Bruce not calling her back ? This movie SUCKED ! And I'm a big TAS fan.
@LeopoldSmith: Well I'm not a hater. It's just that this movie's story is poorly written and doesn't have any of the things that made the series great. Haters are gonna hate...and lousy movies are gonna suck.
@Zuwze Yeah, it was just another redhead blue eyed chick whose voice and clothing were strikingly similar to Andrea's. Either way, the movie sucked. The makers just wanted to milk the success of TAS with it.
@Zuwze OF COURSE THE MOVIE SUCKED ! It was just a pathetic soap opera portraying Bruce as a stud and Andrea as a femme fatale; no one watches TAS to see how many chicks Bruce can score with, and no one cares about flat characters like Andrea who along with Al Ghul and Taria (or whatever the hell her name is) are the WORST characters in the history of TAS. Furthermore, they made the Joker TOTALLY unfunny, or at least less funny than he normally is, and that's inexcusable.
@Fantezism Ok honestly, what are you mad about? You began ranting about how Andrea is stupid because she left Bruce, but is still mad at him, when that wasn't Andrea who threw the wine during the party scene. That was in fact some other redhead whom Bruce dated for one episode of TAS, although I don't think they ever gave her a name.
So are you saying the movie sucked because you misunderstood that part?
@Zuwze Well in that case the animators sucked because they didn't know how to individualize their characters; the redhead at the party throws wine in Bruce's face, and then after 3-4 seconds he flashes back to the day he met Andrea for the first time who coincidentally is also a blue eyed readhead and has the same height and clothing style as the one at the party, and I'm supposed to tell the two apart ?
@Zuwze: What pisses me off about this movie is the fact that it's an ”action soap opera”. Does anyone really care to find out how many times Bruce got laid ? Does anyone care about flat characters like Andrea ? And the makers pretty much sold out because they displayed corpses and violent death scenes (they are violent compared to the ones in TAS), which they had never done before in the series.
@Zuwze And what's with Andrea's costume ? It looks so stupid, almost as stupid as the one of the killer from Scary Movie. Everything that made TAS great, this game ignores ! The only good thing about the movie is the fact that they managed to conceal the killer's identity quite well, which contributed to the movie's shock factor but overall the movie SUCKED.
@Fantezism The costume looks fine. Need i mention some stupid ones from TAS, like the Scarecrow, com'on, you can't possible defend that. And the movie tries to focus on Bruce's how and why he became batman. Which makes Andrea and important character to show, since it he was about to give up the idea of becoming Batman.
"And the makers pretty much sold out because they displayed corpses and violent death scenes , which they had never done before in the series."
A lot is symbolic here. The theme park of the utopian future in ruins. At 2:28, you see a globe being lit on fire and being destroyed, as his world is after losing Andrea.
Batman than proceeds to fall into a current, and is swept away beyond his control. His whole body becomes weightless as he is pushed out, and divided from Andrea.
It was bad enough he lost his parents. He valued Andrea so much he could have given up being Batman. To lose her puts him at a huge low.
There was a comicbook sequel of Mask of the Phantasm called Shadow of the Phantasm which shows that Andrea and The Joker were in the sewer and when the park started to explode it hit Andrea and The Joker. It looked like The Joker would die for good when he fell into the water at the bottom of the sewer, but he was carried by the current and it led him to the Gotham River where he swam to the shore. Andrea climbed out of a manhole and made her way to the ocean liner.
@billyhammet They could get away with a lot of blood and even sexual references in Batman The Animated Series and even The New Batman Adventures, because parents didn't complain about the violence of cartoons until the time the Batman Beyond movie came out and cartoon creators had to make things lighter for the new generation. Now cartoons these days can't get away with any violence. Look at DBZ Kai for example they can't get away with all the blood and violence like they used too.
@sunblade223 Yea. And cartoons now suck because they leave out the importance and drama of scenes that are meant to touch base with the audience. Your suppose to draw the audience to respond with the reality and metaphors that they symbolize.
That first bomb, the one in the oven that chimed when it went off, was completely separate from all the other explosives in that chain reaction. It served no real purpose other than as a gag.
@kellemarine Mask of the Phantasm was supposed to be the finale of batman TAS series-wise, with the Joker supposedly dying, but TAS was renewed so they had to twist the series around. Real cop-out but it was worth it.
@kellemarine This movie was supposed to be the finale of Batman TAS, so Joker apparently was supposed to die, but the show kept going, so they had to do a really lame cop out as to how he survived. Batman can't survive without the Joker, so they had to find a way to keep him.
@kellemarine In the comic that accompanied this, it was revealed that Andrea and Joker ended up in the sewers. She was going to kill him, but then realised that he was no longer the man that killed her father. The explosions from the Fair then separated them and Joker is last seen being carried away by the waters, laughing.
This film has the dark gothic atmosphere of Tim Burton's Batman, and the complex story line of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight. Plus the campy Joker of the original Batman series. Therefore, this is my favorite Batman film of all time.
Obviously Andrea does not kill Joker, but do they clarify how he survived and did not figure out "goodbye my love" might mean Batman is Bruce Wayne? Help me about with this please :)
Before Batman TNAS appeared, I always thought Joker died at the end.
I guess Andrea left, because she didn't expect Bruce to figure out she was the Phantasm, and she then feared Bruce's justice (the law says whoever kills must be arrested).
I know vengence and killing are personal and not right, but such crooks who care only about their future and obviously are the reason the Amusement Park got closed (because they do not allow a bright future for people) are not worth living.
I am not aware of the coninuity, or storylines in the build up to this and the thereafter, however, The Joker is not shown actually dying. There is no body. There is no scene of death, merely him and andrea being consumed with smoke. Shes alive at the end. Whats to say the Joker is dead?
@Zidean007 He actually isn't; there have been many stories in continuity that are dated after this movie, chronologically. I still think, however, if he did die here it would've been more poignant...so they left it up in the air. How the Joker specifically survives is actually addressed in a comic that came out a few years later, indicating that Andrea didn't want to kill him, just put a big scare into him, or something - which is awful BS if you ask me, terrible writing that is.
@ANTIcoFilms Actually if you watched and listened to the story of Return of the Joker, After Tim Drake tortured till he was insane, Tim kills Joker.
Later Joker explains why he kidnapped Tim. He implanted a microchip in Tim that carries the Joker's consciousness and personality, allowing him to transform Tim into a clone of himself. ..Eh don't you get tired of being wrong?
please stop having goes at me I wouldnt mind you telling me what i've done wrong but PLEASE dont be so harsh 2ndly I was just saying that joker wasnt dead
