@mkmstrings Aside from the amount of people and, obviously, older cars... this is SHOT FOR SHOT the same as it is today. There might be a couple more high rises and less people in the Waikiki ocean, but every thing else is the same. It's still beautiful.
The early 1960s is the correct date for this film. The Ala Moana Building and Foster Tower are both completed, but the numerous highrises which would soon follow in the '60s haven't been built yet.
Of course, even more would be constructed in the years after that. LOTS more.
I think it is all abut perspective. The Island and the people have not changed. Unfortunately time marches on. I was raised there from 1947 until 1960 and my husband did two tours there. Much is the same only you now have to look for it!
:05 shows two Matson Liners. The Lurline is arriving while the ss Mariposa or ss Monterey is docked. That Lurline was sold-off in 1963 and the 2nd ss Lurline (formerly the Matsonia) took her place. That part of the film was taken in 1963 or before.
Sorry for the people of the island that we over did the tourism. I feel sad for my step-mother's family that have to deal with the rapid change over there.
@1324TN Yes I agree. Hawaii is not like that anymore. Those days are gone unfortunately because everything has been taken over by big government with crooked politicians Big Corporate gangsters and lazy drug and drunk infested people that don't care anymore. thats what has happen to the Islands and thats all American way. Europe has not infested and poison their Island territories as bad as the U.S. Has done to its states and territories.
@1324TN@1324TN They should have left Hawaii as a sovereign or territory island then maybe the changes would not have happen so fast and quick. now looking at it today brings tears to the eyes. So sad.
From the Hale Koa Hotel you almost can't see Diamond Head with all those high rise hotels competing each other. Last time I was the I had to go out on a peir to see Diamond Head and that was in 06. The first time I was in Oahu, Hawai'i back in 1991 and I could see Diamond Head from the sidewalk by the beach near my hotel. So it has change a lot and traffic is bad as well.
Well the date is either wrong, or this movie has been spliced. I saw a 1964 Chevy in one scene, and a 1962 Olds in front of the International Market Plaace, putting this film about the time I lived there in the late sixties.
Wow i had to comment. Thats 50 years ago. Things look pretty much the same then as it is now. I cant believe it. Tourism looks pretty much the same. Oh so long ago. How time flys.
Narox you got to be kidding me. Aside from a couple of things (i.e. Punchbowl), it is very very different. Waikiki beach is practically unrecognizable with its emptyness of canyons of concrete structures. Vast fields of cane are long gone and pineapple nearly on its way out too.
Greetings from New Orleans Louisiana.
Same here and I think all around the world
I love the video, maybe someone can add some music to it
Good luck
