Because, they model CLOTHES. They use plain/drab looking models so you'll look at the designer's clothes and not be distracted by the model. Same reason as why they're so skinny..to show the clothing and shape of the clothing, not the model's body. Not saying the skinny thing is right, but that's the way it is. And if they looked like the rest of the world, women would feel fine about themselves and not feel the need to buy clothes from the designer.

VS models are commercial models. Versace, Chanel, Prada are haute couture. I think VS models look generic, the conventional definition of "beauty" in our society. High fashion is all about looking different, that's why designers try to create different clothes all the time. The same goes for models in high fashion. They don't want Marissa Miller, they want Coco Rocha, who looks very unique but attractice enough for people to go and buy whatever stuff in the ad campaign that Coco is on.

Donatella is truely developing with each collection! Every season I find myself so eagerly awaiting the Versace collection to see what she comes up with next. Really beautiful clothes and it's lovely to see the brand moving away from the tacky ostentatious image it had to a more tasteful, refined and elegant one.

I am glad Donatella found new and wider fans. However, Versace is going through a minimalist phase and also a strategy to boost sales. In doing so, Versace is appealing to the lowest common demoninator that is the mass market. The new products are lower in prices such as some of the homeware products and the designs are less "out there". So for the new fans to claim the old Versace as tacky and ostentatious is missing the point. Gianni was a maximalist. His designs were bold and beautiful.
