God chose the Israelites before. But their claim, with pride, to be the chosen people in front of the Gentiles, incurred Gods curse. Likewise, God said to the Muslims, they were the best of the communities. But the Muslims shall have the same fate if they themselves start to express this before other communities.
The Prophet and his contemporary followers never said that they were proud to be Muslims. The Muslims who faced the Persians or the Byzantines or the Vandals in Spain never stood before them saying that they were proud Muslims.
Proud to be Muslim is a slogan that we have learnt from the western nationalists as we have learnt Death to America from the communists. A Muslim is a humble person who stands firm on his feet.
