Quite honestly, I love Ireland, the geography, the tenacity of the people from the west islands, the literature, (both english and celtic), the music, etc. But, I swear, after having lived and worked in many countries (including Ireland for a few years), I have never met a group of people more in love with themselves than the Irish.

Well there was a few hundred years of provocation prior to that. Also thats in the north where two different communities are involved. In the south your much less likely to get killed than most other nations.
The last time we were in Ireland it was way before the ceasefire and the UDA presence in the North really threw us. I understand there is a history, I guess I was equating the results of that history with the idea that a person (in the North) would not feel as safe as someone living in certain other countries.
